21 Going On 14

Do I really look that young?

Today I accompanied my mom to our jeweler so that she could pick up her rings that were being cleaned. We had a bit of a wait, so I entertained myself by browsing through the display cases. I happened to comment on one of the engagement rings, and the saleswoman quickly piped up, “Now she’s got to be way too young to be looking at engagement rings!” [Chuckle].  Understandably, 21 is a young age to be getting married, but it wouldn’t be out of the question (especially in the South!). Evidently, my appearance makes it seem that I should be listening to the Jonas brothers rather than preparing to graduate college.

I’ve had extensive experience in being mistaken for a young’un. As a senior in high school, a lady in the parking lot spotted me with my car keys and informed me that I was “too little” to be driving yet. As a freshman in college, an IT employee told me that I “looked like I was 12.”  I suppose someday I will be grateful for my youthful appearance. How about you? Do you think you look your age?

In defiance of my young appearance, I ate like a “big girl” today.

Monday

Call me an optimist, but I tend to give products a second chance even after a disappointing experience. Case in point: Nutiva Amazon Acai HempShake. In hopes that my taste buds had evolved, I ordered a few packets of the schtuff…but it still tastes like sand. It’s rare that I absolutely detest a food, but this one is up there on my “nasty list.”

WHOA. Pecan butter is amazing. Receiving these Artisana nut butters was a mixed blessing–I am loving being able to sample them all, but I am developing expensive taste in nut butter as a result. Oh well. Food is my luxury item:)

A few months ago, I made an asparagus-tofu salad that spawned a food fugue. I decided to re-create it today with some green beans, and it was just as phenomenal. FYI, I cooked the tofu in soy sauce, garlic, and ginger.

I glanced through Jenna‘s second e-cookbook a few nights ago in search of some butternut squash recipes and stumbled on the Bean-eriffic Butternut Squash Soup. Both it and the garlic toast (from Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan) were super-simple and delicious. I used that Low-Sodium Ezekiel bread for the toast. Sadly, that’s the end of the monster zucchini:(

  1. While some people think I’m older than my years, lots of folks say that I look 12. So who knows, haha ;-)

Oh yes, my taste in nut butters is expensive as well, which you already know :-D

  2. I am always mistaken for younger than I am! I hate it so much…but then I think that when I get older, I’ll have younger looks which is a good thing ;)

Mmm that pecan butter is divine!

  3. Argh, that must be so frustrating to constantly be mistaken for younger. Just think of it this way, when you’re 70, people will think you’re 50-something :)

I haven’t had cream of wheat in ages! It’s delish. Reminds me of childhood.

  4. I’ve always looked older than my age! I was bigger than everyone else in elementary school :)

  5. i think i look my age for the most part. although, people usually think i’m younger when they venture a guess. but then on the other hand, i’ve been asked if i would be ordering any “drinks” at restaurants before, and i’m 18! so i think it just depends on the person, or what i’m wearing, my makeup, etc.

and why does everything you make always look so amazing?! i always want it all! i honestly look forward to your posts, that’s how much i love your food caroline. i made simple garlic toast today too!!! :)

  6. Haha, a few days ago this grocery store cashier actually ARGUED with me, saying that I “had to be 12 years old!” I’m 20, and she just couldn’t believe it. She was like “your mom gave you her credit card, huh?” I was like, “no this is in my name… I’m 20.” it was weird. I definitely look young, but most people think I’m at least 15. Haha!

    Your tofu salad looks incredible!

  7. I’m the other way around, so I totally envy you! I always looked old for my age. When I was 12 and went out shopping, people would ask me if I “worked here”. When I was 17, I got asked out by a guy who was at least in his late twenties. People at work and church gasp when they find out that I’m “only 21″. Sometimes I check the mirror to see if I have wrinkles on my face (I swear I don’t!).

I know, that amazon acai tastes nasty! My first experience with hemp was that and Vega Whole Food Infusion, so I thought I had a particular aversion to hemp. Until I tried Nutiva’s other flavors :)

Mmm the tofu salad dish looks phenomenal!! And I definitely must check out that recipe! I still haven’t tried anything from that cookbook >.<

  8. YES! People tell me I look young as well. Usually people assume I’m in high school. Although, this summer, another intern at the lab thought I was actually a grad student…

  9. awww sorry that woman thought you were so young…that can get kind of annoying! I’m so tall that people hardly ever think Im super young because it would prob be weird to have a 6+ ft 14 year old, ya know?

  10. I certainly know how you feel. Im 24 and my clients at work….actually…most people i meet think that im 18-20!
Because im studying nursing, i always hope that my patients dont think that im too young to be looking after them!
But I did spot my first tiny wrinkle on my forhead last week!! It may have always been there? but i was devistated lol :) I went and looked at old photos to see if this ‘wrinkle’ had always been there haha
Your ‘big girl’ food looks scrumptious as always :)

OH! You’re my new favorite blogger fyi

  12. Oy! Don’t worry about being mistaken for someone younger than you are: I’ve been identified as a twelve year-old and I’m 23! I just keep telling myself that I’ll appreciate it when I’m older, plus it gives me permission to act like a child occasionally ; )

You’re more persistant than I am: one slip of the Acacai Nutiva was enough for me! Sand-flavoured grit I tell you. Your breakfast on the other hand=divine.

  13. It’s always good to be confused by younger I guess! :) You’ll want that for a long time girl~~~

  14. Your “young” story sounds exactly like mine. :P I’ve had a parent joke I was “too little” to go to college. How would I survive out in the big ol’ world? I’ve even gotten children’s admissions prices to festivals in the past ;)

Recently when I helped sell our house, the potential buyers assumed I was somewhere still in high school and gasped to find out, yes, I am nearly a junior in college.

That cream of wheat looks mouth-watering good :D

  15. I look young for my age too. I went into a casino a few days ago and got stopped and checked for ID. I guess it’s better to look young than to look old, even if we can’t appreciate it now!

  16. I would love to try the Artisana nut butters, but they cost so darn much!

  17. I’m not sure.. it depends where I am. In Florida everyone thinks I look like I’m 14 because most girls want to grow up fast so they put on tons of makeup and stuff. When I’m at school in Virginia people usually think I’m a little bit older. It’s weird lol.. no one ever gets it right!

  18. I don’t look my age at all! My hair dresser (who I’ve been going to for YEARS) always asks me when I’m graduating high school. She’s completely serious, too!

Mmmm tofu! I need to pick up a block today – I just got the worst craving! Buhbye monster zuc!

  19. Ha. yeah, people tend to think I am anywhere from 15-17. I’ll be 22 next month… I graduate in December. lol.

I’ve had people think I was with a freshman orientation group on campus when I was just grabbing a snack on a break (I work on campus). It’s actually kind of upsetting sometimes, because I don’t think people treat me fairly because I look so young. I don’t get taken seriously sometimes.

Anywho, the food looks tasty, especially that tofu-asparagus salad. yum!

  20. My range is always 14-16. I get carded when buying wine EVERY SINGLE TIME. And I even go to the same store! They always make some remark like, “Are you sure you’re old enough to buy this?” And then they laugh when they see my birthyear is ’84. My oh my.

I think someday we will appreciate this, right?

  21. I am seventeen, but I look like im 12-14. I still get offered kids menus. They still ask how old I am for PG-13 movies. One cop even pulled me over because he didn’t think I was old enough to drive. a;dkfj;

holy smokes! your asisan green bean salad looks so good :D Love the cashews and the tofu in it!

  22. I look way younger than I actually am too! It’s fine, when we are in our 40′s looking like were in our 30′s….it will be alllll good!

Mmm the tofu salad and oatmeal look delicious!

  23. Oh the same kind of thing happens to me all the time! Once when I was on vacation with my family in hawaii, the hotel people told my parents if they wanted to go and look at rooms and get information about buying a time share that they could have someone look after me. I was 19. I got mad and informed her that I didn’t need a babysitter and asked her how old she thought I was. She said I didn’t look any older than 14! I’m 21 now, and I went to dinner with my parents last week and the waiter tried to take away my wine glass. I pulled out my ID immediately and told him that I actually would be drinking. I wish that this meant that I will look like I’m 30 when I’m 50, but I don’t think it works that way…

    Delicious looking eats!!!

  24. i love those little baby jars of nut butter! so adorable. then again i get a kick out of anything miniature. i always get mistaken to be younger than i am. all your eats are looking phenomenal today!

  25. I think it’s funny that most of us look younger than we are. Hmm… I wonder if we are what we eat? Vibrant and fresh people?!

  26. I look way younger than my age too! People always think my sister is actually older than me lol. And a lot of people can’t believe that I’m their nurse!

    http://ajangel25.wordpress.com

  27. I was at a diner in my town the other day and the waiter thought that I was 14! He wouldn’t let it go either! Really though, what 14 year old is covered in tattoos and at the diner at 2 am??!?

  28. I just have to vent on this topic- I look really young too, and like some others here, I also work at a college, which complicates things. Everyone always assumes I am a student (I have two graduate degrees). I agree that you just don’t get taken as seriously when you look young, and it is beyond frustrating. The worst part though, is when people feel like it’s okay to comment on how young you look, and then try to backtrack and comfort you with the line, “You’ll appreciate it when you’re older.” Ahhh. Why is it okay to comment on someone’s age? We would never feel like it’s okay to comment on someone’s weight…it’s just as rude, IMO.

  29. I’m 25, but am told I look 12. I was followed home from the ABC Store last winter because the officer thought I looked 14 (ps I was driving myself). People think my sister is the older one, but she’s 4 years younger than me. But I guess it’ll pay off when we’re older :)

  30. [...] a Tamagotchi? I know I appear to be about 14 years old to some people (as I lamented last summer), but seriously, give me some [...]
