A Different Kind of Patchwork

In recent years, I have become one of many who has embraced a “green” lifestyle. Perhaps one of the simplest ways to move toward a more environmentally friendly mode of living is to begin using your own re-usable grocery bags; by doing so, not only can you eschew the whole “paper or plastic?” dilemma, but you can also help keep our planet beautiful. As a result of the re-usable bag fad, I recently realized that I have accumulated quite a collection of them–check it out:cimg7363

They’re kind of like T-shirts in that each has a little memory attached to it: the Trader Joe’s bag from my trip to Chicago; the Whole Foods bag I got free, simply for being a Duke student; the Vega bag that arrived with a box full of goodies…the list goes on. How about you? Do you have a re-usable bag collection?

Now, onto the food that I tote home in said bags:

Yes, the HempShake has returned.

Wednesday

The inspiration for this breakfast came from the PETA cookbook’s Ultimate Frisbee Salad (p. 107). Not sure what it has to do with ultimate frisbee, but it was still a fun meal idea. I spiced it up a bit with the addition of almond extract.

In the middle of breakfast, the doorbell rang, and I found a surprise package waiting for me at the door:

Thanks to Suzy at Quorn! I can’t wait to try some of the recipes.

After running some errands with my sister (and getting a Mother’s Day gift), I came home hangry, so I just threw together my Mexican Dip. The homemade tofu sour cream is definitely what makes this dish…well, the black bean chips were pretty awesome too.

After a 4 month hiatus from my beloved waffle maker, I busted it out for some flax waffles tonight. I sat down to eat and noticed that gaping hole on my plate…

Before I go, I want to thank Dulcie for giving me the Renee Award:renee-award1-thumb

The Renee Award is one of the most meaningful awards in blog world because it honors someone who is incredibly inspirational in her intelligent and witty writing. And by doing so, this award celebrates women’s smart, strong and inspirational spirit! It honors women who spread joy and love like an Acorn……a small package growing into a tall and sturdy oak tree which gives more acorns…………..

Thanks so much, Dulcie–this award means so much coming from a super-blogger like you!

I would like to pass this award onto Olga, Emily, and Marianne.

Have a great evening, everyone!

  1. Oh, yes, I do have a bag collection! I have two from Whole Foods, a baby and a big one – so I choose one based on how long my grocery list is! I also have a tote from a coffee magazine that they gave me for workin’ at a coffee competition. Those are the ones I use most.

But anyway. HempShake! Oh yeah! And I really want to try the passionate mango coconut milk yogurt. I love how you dressed it up! More coconut and mango added on top? Genius!! Ooh, and tempeh bacon! I haven’t had that in sooo long! You are smart for pairing that with homemade waffles…too bad you couldn’t eat them on the same plate! I’ve left food components in the microwave before too, and remembered two hours later. (Parsnips, actually.) And I ate them still!

Have a wonderful night! You eats are so wonderful and inspiring. Yummie.

  2. I’ve yet to try a Quorn product, but I need to, because I have a ton of Quorny post titles to use ;)

  3. My bag collection is defintely not as fun as yours. I have 4 that are exactly the same, and one other that my mom gave me. I don’t know that I NEED anymore, but I’d like to pick some up from my favourite stores, because they are pretty. Is that sad?

And thanks so much for the award :)

  4. cute colection of reusable bags. I have only the Tj’s one.
one quick question: if you use reusable bags for groceries, what bags do you use for trash? (I usually use them, either plastic or paper, for trash)
and the dill cornbread recipe can be found in my blog, under coco’s creation! :)

  5. Oooh I love the collection of bags. I have a ton too but I ALWAYS forget to bring them into the store. Ooopsies. I need to get better about that!

Delicious eats as always my friend =)

  6. i have some bags from lululemon that i use for groceries and 2 from whole foods. always gotta be prepared right? :) thanks for reminding me i have some tempeh bacon i need to eat. how did you like the yogurt ? it looks and sounds so delicious!!

  7. Love your bag collection! I do have some cloth type bags, but I also still acculmulate plastic ones so I reuse those everytime I go to the grocery store. I only chuck them when they’re full of holes. I would like to eventually ban all the plastic ones from the house….I just need to get the other 3/4 of my family on the same train of thought as me!! ;)

  8. I have a huge reusable bag collection – Meijer, WFs, Kroger, etc. It’s a little bit ridiculous! Kind of like my nut butter collection ;)

I LOVE dipping! The bagel/yogurt combo sounds like a fantastic discovery!

  9. I started using reusable bags a few years ago and never went back! I keep one that scrunches into its own little baggie in my purse at all times.

The radio cooler is saaaweeet – I hope you roam around blaring music from it ;)

  10. Caroline,

I’ve always been curious about Quorn.

    Thanks for the award darlin,

    Emily

  12. a reusable bag collection! how cool, and what a “Green” hobby!
I would love to try that coconut yogurt…is there really a strong coconut taste?
    btw, congrats on the award!

  13. I love your bags! They are so fun to use, I feel like I can put so much more in there then I can with a regular plastic bag, makes it easier to carry up 3 flights of stairs to my apartment, plus they never rip on me!
    Congrats on the award.

  14. You’re welcome!! You totally deserved the award :]

I love your bag collection! I want one of my own. I need to get to it!

Those waffles look amazing. I always wanted a waffle maker!

    <3

  15. Sorry to break your heart darlin’, but tasty as it is, Quorn contains egg and non-free range to come to it.

  16. Yes, I am aware of the egg products in Quorn products. While I do not regularly consume eggs, I would rather sample this product than waste food.

  17. That radio cooler is so cool! And your waffles look fantastic. I have definitely found that my grocery tote is growing, I actually passed up on a free one the other day.

  18. I meant my grocery tote *collection* is growing…

  19. i love those reusable grocery bags and always yell at my family when they dont use them. Well, last time I came home from school there were TONS of them in the house and when I questioned my mom about it she told me that she kept forgetting them at home, feeling really guilty at the store, and buying more! Haha

  20. i love reusable bags!

  21. [...] dinner, I tried one of the Naked Quorn Cutlets that I received in the mail a few weeks ago. It made for quite the tasty sandwich with BBQ sauce and mashed avo. The rest of the meal screams [...]
