A Little "Green" Bashing

Did any of you happen to watch The Goode Family last night? The Goode Family is the newest animated series from Mike Judge (creator of King of the Hill), and it focuses on a family of tree-hugging, Al Gore-worshipping Whole Foods shoppers. In other words, the Goodes (allegedly) personify the “green” lifestyle. Even though the show essentially pokes fun at my vegetarian lifestyle and many of its environmentalist values, I had to laugh–Mrs. Goode refuses to shop at a regular grocery store because it “doesn’t even have a mission statement.” Last night’s pilot episode also depicted a trip to the grocery store; I happened to notice that the items in the grocery cart were eerily similar to my past Whole Foods purchases (“Vegan Life Bars” and “Soy Nuggets”). I think a lot of my fellow food bloggers would get a kick out this show as well. Read more about The Goode Family here. What do you think of this new series? Do you get offended when others make fun of some of your “green” habits?

While my eats today did not include any “Vegan Life Bars” or soy nuggets, there may have been some carob and tempeh bacon involved. Read on for the deets…

I have decided that Nature’s Path is my absolute favorite granola brand. I did a review of some runners-up a few months ago, but this Acai Apple stuff is downright addictive–I always sneak a few extra spoonfuls from the box:)

As I mentioned before, the alphabet oats challenge has grown a bit tiresome. I will finish it, although I have decided to condense the remaining letters. This morning’s bowl was extra indulgent, featuring ingredients beginning with U, V, and W. Nom, nom.

"UVW" Oats: oatbran (cooked in rice milk & mashed banana) with unsweetened dark cocoa, vanilla, vegan carob chips, White Chocolate Wonderful PB, white chocolate chunks, & wheat germ

For some unexplained reason, I have been jonesin’ for a club sandwich lately. I finally satisfied that craving today for lunch with an out-of-this-world sandwich. Double decker sandwiches may be appearing more frequently, as I came to the realization that you can have TWO sandwiches in one. For example, this one was hummus and cheese on the bottom, and a BLT on the top. This lunch made for quite a content tummy.

the magical double decker: hummus, organic cheese, mustard, tempeh bacon, lettuce, & tomato...go ahead, it's OK to drool.

I had another eggplant hanging out in the fridge, so I decided to make a simple ratatouille dish for dinner. I also had some of Tuesday‘s Moroccan Chickpeas & Rice, but you know me–I can’t stand the same thing twice, so I added almonds and currants this time. Delish.

  1. Totally agree with you on the Nature’s Path. It’s the only kind I buy and I’m a bit hooked on the Pumpkin Flax and Peanut Butter.

  2. Oh my gosh. The UVW oats might be the most indulgent of your alphabet oats yet!! I can’t wait to see what you have up your sleeve when you get to Z!

  3. Things that peeve me: being called a “granola,” being asked where I get my protein, being asked if I’m having “another salad,” and the ultimate, my mom’s comment, “Well, your great grandma ate bacon every day of her life and lived to be 93!”

  4. haha Sarah’s comment is funny!!

and your oats are SOOO DARK. i’d like to try them someday!!

  5. No way, I totally missed the premiere of that show! I need to find it now, I imagine it’s funny. I don’t think I’ll be offended…what’s the use if you can’t laugh at yourself, you know?

Besides…I think some old gooks shop at WF sometimes :)

  6. club sandwich! brilliant! havent had one in forever, you have the wheels in my head turning even though its 12:22 a.m. haha! love the oats too, of courseee.

  7. I watched The Goode Family too – definitely wasn’t expecting it to make fun of the green lifestyle so much! I did think some parts were pretty funny though :)

That sandwich looks awesome. What do you think of the tempeh bacon? I’m really craving a BLT now!

  8. Caroline,

That show sounds hilarious! Unfortunately I rarely can force myself to sit still through an entire episode of ant show (HOUSE MD is and exception to this rule). I have to be up doing something while I watch. Maybe I’ll DVR it and watch it while I’m cooking next week!

That sandwich is hilarious! Toothpicks are totally mandatory. :D

Have a glorious night, my darlin!

    With Love,

    Emily

  9. Oh i’ve heard about that show! I need to watch it now!
    that sandwich looks really good!

  10. wooooo…. that oatbran ecstasy looks AWESOME~~~ I think I’m going to make something similar for breakfast today! :)
I don’t watch TV, so, no opinion on that series!

  11. Very delicious way to get 3 letters in your oats!!!

I’ve never heard of the Goode show. I’ll have to check for it!

  12. Any oats with peanut butter and chocolate in the same bowl, sound like the ulitimate breakfast to me!
Your club sandwich looks delish, I haven’t had one in years.
Your ratatouille looks great, I love throwing leftover veggies in a pot and making “ratatouile” its a great way to cook veggies before they go bad.

  13. It takes A LOT to actually offend me – I’m pretty sarcastic so I feel as though if I can dish it out, I better be able to take it. Luckily no one really offends me and my lifestyle!

I used to eat club sandwiches ALL the dang time! That looks fantastic!!

  14. i’d never heard of this show until you wrote about it, so of course i had to watch the first episode on abc’s website.
    my thoughts…
that is basically how portland is, especially my neighborhood. not exactly to that extreme of course, but immediately I thought to myself “ahhaha oh portland…”

  15. Club sandies are what’s wassup!! Along with WCW. It is just so wonderful and white chocolately!

I always feel semi awkward when I’m out to eat and make my order all complicated with no cheese and stuff, but then I realize I am a boss and it don’t matta! Also, I was staying with my friend’s family in Texas and they just not could not understand why I did not want mayo on white bread, gravy on brisket, or ranch dressing on my salad. NASTY!

  16. i didnt see the show, but i have seen a few previews…sounds cute-ish, but i am glad i missed it since i hardly need more tv shows to get addicted to!

  17. Ohhh that Tj Maxx dress (hahahah NOT trader joe’s, I was confused for a sec…) is ADORABLE, so summery! I love it!

And those oats look like the tastiest alphabet oats of the series! Anything with WCW is just too divine for words!

  18. All my co-workers make fun of me all the time!!! I’m use to it and just laugh it off. I haven’t seen that show but I’ll look for it now. BTW, your oats look fabulous!!!!

  19. holy crap, that club sandwich is awesome.

  20. i have never heard of that show you mentioned. sounds entertaining. people always give me a hard time about using my own bags or putting my purchases in my purse. oh well, let them!

    UVW oats are bangin!

  21. LOVE the oatbran ectasy!

  22. Aw, man! I wanted to watch the premier of The Goodes and didn’t even know it was on already! And your club sandwich looks so, so good. Not to mention the UVW oats, very nice! I was wondering what you were going to do for those letters.

  23. That club sandwich looks pretty amazing :D Fun combination of flavours.

I haven’t seen or heard of the show, but you know, you have to be able to laugh at yourself, so I would probably think it was funny. Kind of like Blade Of Glory – I figure skate, and they were totally mocking the whole sport, but it was beyond hilarious!
