A New Kind of Canvas

If you haven’t guessed by now, I consider food as a kind of art—the cook combines its flavors, textures, aromas, and, of course, its presentation  to create culinary masterpieces on a daily basis. I strive to be able to achieve such gastronomical beauty.

Recently, however, I have discovered a new kind of canvas, and this one does not involve the taste-buds. Several weeks ago, I mentioned the thrills of seeking out decorative ideas for my new apartment; a few days later I showed you the blank canvas (i.e., my unfurnished apartment) on which I would be developing my interior design skills.

In a recent post, several of you commented on the decor of my dining area, indicating that I am not the only foodie-decorator in this world. Accordingly, today I show you the finished product. Allow me to take you on a tour of the Broccoli Hut headquarters…

*If you have any questions about where I purchased furniture, etc. please e-mail me or leave a comment, and I’d be glad to provide you the information!*

Do you delight in home decor as much as I do? How would you describe your decorating style?

Now let’s get back to my favorite art form—eating!

Saturday

Seth and I headed out for an outdoor run at a nearby trail. The weather was perfect—cool and breezy, without a trace of humidity. We ended up running for over an hour, so we were both pretty hungry upon our return. Sounds like a prime time for a hearty brunch meal.

Hunger beckoned again come dinnertime. We searched around for a new restaurant to try but ultimately settled on dining at the Flying Biscuit again. My “Tofu n Taterssalad was a tad disappointing—it was basically a mound of flavorless scrambled tofu on top of limp greens and roasted potatoes. The taters were pretty amazing though.

Then we headed out to see Going the Distance, owing in part to our experience with a long-distance relationship. Verdict: realistic, funny (a tad crude), and a rockin’ soundtrack. Anyway, when we returned we settled in for a few mugs of hot tea.

Sunday

Breakfast was a good news/bad news hybrid. Good: figs and cashew butter make an incredible combination! Bad: I don’t have any figs left :(

Greek-ish salad for lunch.

After a full afternoon of studying, I came home to make a simple veggie burger meal.

Off to prepare for another week…g’night.

  3. I am terrible on choosing items to decorate my house. I wish I had a good friend who loved to decorate to help me out.

  4. Gorgeous apartment! I see you’ve got an eye for feminine- looking pieces. I’m not sure how I would characterize my home decor style because I’m kind of all over the map. However, I do place a high emphasis on comfort and a welcoming feeling. Not really into the sparse modern look. My parents rebuilt/redecorated our house in the Arts and Crafts style and I really like that look.

  5. Longtime reader here but I don’t think I’ve commented before… but I have to say that I love your apartment decor, it is just gorgeous!!! You certainly have a great sense of style that flows throughout the whole place.

  6. LOVING your apartment decor, Caroline :) You did quite well, kudos to you. I, too, love to decorate. I don’t find the thrift store and Goodwill deals, however. I spend all my decor money at Anthropologie (best store ever), Target, World Market and sometimes, Ikea. That and Whole Foods take quite a bit of my paycheck….

By the way, you’re SOOOO organized, too! Love it. I hope my apartments as tidy, organized and cute as yours. I would love to know where you got a lot of your red kitchen attire– Dishes, spatulas, tea pot- ketals…and those spice jars…not red, however.

Love the eats, too, by the way– well done :) Tried your “kidney bean balls with thatziki” and I added some wholemade hummus with chips on the side. Well done, thanks for the recipe.

  7. our apartments have EXACTLY the same layout! the same company built them, perhaps? from the blogging nook to the window in the living room, they have almost everything in common :) i don’t have marble countertops, though (i wish!).

you will have to come over sometime — perhaps a running date could be planned?

  8. Ah! It looks great! I love your desk- built ins are beautiful in my opinion. And the yellow looks very cool with the black. I want to try putting potatoes on my salad after reading this=deliciousness!

  9. I love how you decor your place. It’s soo girly and comfy! Love love love it~~~ :D

  10. Wow I seriously love all of your decor, it looks SO good. The colour accents in the rooms are sweet! I’m pretty interested in interior design and deco but I’m still at home so the only room I really style is my own. I’m excited to get to fab up and furnish a whole place when that day comes though!
