A Taste of Motherhood

Now, I don’t know what being a mother is like…but I imagine that it’s a lot like having a 7-week-old puppy. Accordingly, the past few days have given me a taste of motherhood. The evidence:

My floor is strewn with toys.

I spend a large proportion of my time searching for, cleaning up, and thinking about pee and poop.

Bathtime seems like a great photo opp.

Fortunately, I still had time to make some tasty meals today.

This morning’s breakfast was Ellie’s New York Breakfast.

My tweaks:

-I used full slices of pumpernickel bread rather than the suggested cocktail size. I have plans for some seriously tasty sandwiches with the remainder of the loaf:)

-I used Laughing Cow wedges instead of whipped cream cheese, mostly to save money—I always have LC on hand and figured it was close enough to cream cheese.

I’ve always been intrigued by smoked salmon—my brother-in-law Major has a downright obsession with the stuff. I figured it must be pretty tasty. However, I found it oppressively salty. As it turns out, there are a whopping 600mg (25% RDA) of sodium in each 2 oz serving. Crikey! I think I would have been perfectly content with just the vegetables and Laughing Cow on toast.

Thanks to my pantry clean-out efforts, I am really scraping my cupboards for protein sources these days. I made a taco salad with a seriously old can of refried beans—I was too scared to look at the expiration date.

The evening meal was a simple kidney bean curry with fluffy pita to soak it all up.

Alright, off to enjoy the last bit of Glee. Good night!

  1. Still so tiny!! I keep thinking Margot will grow a foot overnight. Is she the same breed as Maddie? Meaning, will she be tiny forever?

  2. Get used to cleaning up that poop ;)

  3. oh man. puppies are a handful! but so worth it.

  4. My sister just got a puppy for Christmas. At first she was all quiet and shy but that soon ended. Suddenly she was this ball of energy and went after everything in sight! One day she walked into my room and chewed up my retainer! I was so mad! She also learned how to open closed doors within a week of being in our house. She is so smart it’s scary… Keep an eye on your little one, I have heard that Jack Russels are very smart dogs too!

  5. You’re puppy is SO cute, but I’m sure quite a handful ;) Enjoy training!

  6. aww, what a cute puppy! the training is the tough part, but once that happens, it’s so nice to have a friend to come home to. :)

  7. so. freaking. CUTE :) !!

  8. Your meals look delicious! I especially love the sound and look of that taco salad.

    ps. your puppy is adorable!!

  9. I will have all of your smoked salmon. . .by the by what brand did you get? Not that it matter as all of it is pretty salty.

  10. oh yes! I remember those days with baby Frankster. I could always tell when he was looking for a nice spot on the carpet :) Luckily he potty trained really quickly! And I definitely think a pup is good practice for a future baby (at least I’m hoping it did me some good- we shall find out). mmm pumpernickel bread- love! And I am definitely thinking about a taco salad for dinner tomorrow night- hooray cinco de mayo

  11. There’s the little one! What a cutie. Hope she doesn’t give you too much trouble!

  12. Aww, puppy! Yep, that’s all I have to contribute today. :)

  13. Your life of poo and pee hunting and cleaning sounds a lot like mine at the moment! I just got a new puppy a month or so ago and while I am trying my best at toilet training, the torrential rain we have been having lately is making it very hard! And so, the pee and poo hunt continues… Luckily, it is all worth it for the gorgeous bundle of fluff I have to keep me company :)
