oh I should say that ... he did eat the cheese. And then, he opened a bag of Lays Potato Chips and had some of those. Then he had a sugar free popsicle.

mmmm love the tar.

I get frustrated with the advice giving (both unsolicited and asked for) because more often than not , no one follows it and thus I wasted my time.

As a studying dietician, I do get tons of questions from loved ones but I find the hardest ones are from my dad. He thinks its his way of connecting but he just really pushes for information that he already knows or doesn't do anything after learning.

Latest example, he asks me " Is it healthy for me to have a string cheese for snack right now?"
( at 10 pm after a big, late dinner at 8:30 pm).

I reply that I have no idea what he ate that day aside from dinner less than 2 hours ago so No, nothing is healthy right now because 1. you are going to sleep soon so you have nothing you need to fuel 2. you just ate and probably don't need the kcal from whatever type of snack you eat. 3. is cheese healthy? well it could be but there are plenty of healthier options....

It's so tough because he asks questions that cannot be answered- or require many other questions to answer.
String cheese offers calcium and protein but has saturated fat and salt. Did you eat enough kcal today? Do you need more calcium & Protein? Did you already have high fat and high salt foods ? ...

How would you have answered? I'm curious because I get frustrated all the time.

Wow, I'm too much of a coward to try a green monster, let alone a black one ; )

I seriously admire your self-control with nut butters ~ I had to squint just to see the serving on your toast, where as my version would be 90% nut butter with a 10% side of toast...and your pantry video was so interesting! How you can have about fifteen plus jars of the stuff in your house and not devour them all within a month (as I have done many, many times *shame*) I don't know. I wish I had that level of self-discipline!

I do try to give health advice without being too much of a nag but I usually get ignored. My Dad is totally anti-veganism as he thinks it's 'unnatural' and unfortunately my Mum's ED prevents her from listening to my pleas to get her to understand that our bodies need fat to function and eating less than 10g fat a day (as she's done for the past ten years!) just isn't healthy. However, after my Dad's stroke due to high blood pressure (aged 63) this year, he's finally started cutting his salt intake and eating less red meat/full fat dairy. My Mum's cooking him more fish and even *gasp* a vegetarian curry which he moaned about but finished all of anyway! So all his not lost...

And I am going to try your delicious shake recipes at some point ~ the only UK company that sells Nutiva is still sold out at the moment *sniff*

Score for you! How cool is it that your dad finally came around a bit?!
I used to be a nutrition-nag to my immediate family members, so I completely stopped offering my advice. I used to really go off on them... But now I only talk about nutrition if asked a direct question, because I got sick of wasting my breath on fast-food lovers! (Yes, I have to get dinner from somewhere else because my family is full of fast-food junkies, and I was finally wise enough to depart from their artery-clogging ways!)
That tempeh looks sooooo good! And I could swear that ED&BV burrito is gourmet restaurant worthy - you did a pretty pretty job!

Oh I just received a package of that Wheat grass too! I'm gonna try that combo you did, it looks really cool and black! lol.
I do offer nutritional advices sometimes, and my family listens because they know I'm the expert in the house. But I refrain from talking about nutrition too much because I know it can be rather obsessive and ED of me.

I'm guilty of offering unwanted nutritional advice too! Sometimes I just can't help it. Oh, and I had some of those sesame strips tonight too!! I love that flavor (I was disappointed by the coconut one).

Catching up... Wow, Caroline, I absolutely loved your pancake post! Just loved it-- the pictures, the yummy-sounding recipe, everything! You're so awesome, girl!!

Love,

My dad has high cholesterol and has been trying to keep it under control. He often asks me if a food is "good" or "bad" for him or what he can substitute for an ingredient that he knows is high in cholesterol. I try to help when I'm asked without preaching and keep my mouth shut otherwise. Much easier said than done.
