A World Beyond Today

Over the past week or so, my morning routine has been turned upside down—I stopped watching the Today Show.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been greeted by Ann, Matt, and Al upon waking in the morning. They’ve accompanied me through countless workouts and breakfasts, providing a little news along with the kind of fluff I love. C’mon, who doesn’t love Today Throws a Wedding?!

However, as a result of some technical difficulties with the TVs in the gym, I’ve been forced to explore other options for getting my morning news. My chosen replacement is Morning Express with Robin Meade. In contrast to the Today Show, ME focuses more on the news, with far fewer pieces delving into such hard topics as “winter style on a budget” and “cell phones for senior citizens.” Although I occasionally miss Willard’s nonsensical interjections, I learn much more about the state of the world by watching Robin.

How do you get your news in the morning?

I’m fading fast, so I better get to the grub before I fall asleep on the keyboard.

Before heading out to class, I made a waffle-wich, served up with some Amazing Grass-spiked almond milk. This was a desperate attempt to get some cold-fighting nutrients in me.

For lunch, I packed my version of a Chinese cabbage salad.

After a glorious hour-long nap, I made a big bowl of chili. While I usually stir a little PB into my chili, I took a cue from Heather and added almond butter this time.

Alright, off to wash down some Mucinex with a mug of hot cocoa. Ciao.

  1. Mmm that chili looks perfect for a cold night. And why do I always forget about blood oranges?

  2. Is it sad that I get my news via twitter?

  3. Feel better sweet, Caroline! Get yourself some kombucha, or better yet, drink some fresh carrot and orange juice! :)

  4. I know it sounds ridiculous but I do not know what I would do if I could not watch the Today show while I exercised! That waffle-wich looks delicious…I love PB and apple…especially on a waffle :-)

  11. You know I made that chili and LOVED it! I need to do it again. Deliciousness. I actually watch Robin almost every morning at the gym. She is so sweet and I love getting a good view of what is going on everywhere. On a side note- given you love Today Throws a Wedding. Do you remember Mark and Sarah? I used to work at the gym Mark managed in MD!

  12. I’m usually at the gym WAY to early for any sort of news that isn’t CNN – but when I get the chance, I totally watch the Today show. I am a creature of habit, but I just love their approach. I know I get a lot of “fluff” news too, but it just feels like watching friends maybe?
I get most of my news from NPR though – I a junkie like that!
    Hope you are feeling better!

  13. Chili… Good way to chase away colds! :D At least I think so. Yours looks chocked full of nutrients (black beans, almond butter, corn, spices!) on top of looking delicious. I’m sure you’ll get over your cold soon, since you fuel your body so well with all the goodness you eat…! (Nevertheless, here’s to hoping to a speedier recovery — so that you can have a great weekend, too!)

Hmm a wafflewich… I’m going to have to try that one morning. And actually, I don’t really have a way of getting my morning news, I suppose! I have friends all around the world so I’m usually hearing about any sort of major events at some point in the day, thanks to those friends. :)

  14. mmmmm! i really fancy chilli now!

  15. I like to read the new york times over coffee in the morning. :)

  16. I watch the Today Show every morning when I run! If you watch right when it starts, it is all the big news. The fun stuff doesn’t come until the later hours, unfortunately!

  17. What a great looking spread for your daily meals. So nutritious too.

  18. Adding almond butter to chili is amazing! It tastes great in sloppy joe’s too (another cue from Heather).

I really need to get better about keeping myself up-to-date with what’s going on in the world. I don’t have cable (I really just don’t watch tv enough to justify the cost) so I have to make an effort to look things up online! I may check and see if I can access Robin’s show on the CNN website. I’ve always liked her. I used to catch her show sometimes before Glenn Beck came on.
