Adventures in Air Travel

When I set out on my trek home to Birmingham yesterday afternoon, I had no idea what kind of an adventure I was in for. I won’t bore you with the details but the basics of the day included:

  • A two-and-a-half hour weather delay
  • A missed connection flight
  • Multiple hours spent waiting in line
  • A late night road trip (my parents kindly drove 3 hours to Atlanta to pick me up)
  • A 1:30 AM arrival, 6 hours later than planned

Clearly, Delta Airlines caused me much anguish over the past 24 hours. Yeah, I did it—I named names.

All that being said today was a delightful day, making up for all of yesterday’s unpleasantness:

Swimming, shopping, baking…just a few of my favorite things.

Have you ever had a travel nightmare like mine? How did you spend your weekend?

Rewind to yesterday morning…

Saturday

After all that dishware talk on Thursday, I was inspired to whip out my sexy zebra bowls for my oat bran yesterday morning.

Before heading to the airport, I made a filling lunch.

Many hours passed between lunch and dinner…I nibbled on peanuts and tomato juice in-flight, but ultimately found my way to Au Bon Pain in the food court. This measly little salad cost almost nine bucks! Rip-off to the extreme.

I was still hungry, so I wandered around until I found some yogurt and roasted edamame.

Sunday

After my lovely swim this morning, I made a simple breakfast featuring that addictive Total raisin bran. I can always count on Mom to have some stocked:)

It was pretty late by the time we returned from shopping this afternoon, so I decided to eat something light so as not to ruin my appetite for dinner.

True to Sunday night tradition, the fam all came over for dinner this evening. I made myself an Ellie recipe, Tricolore Penne with Chicken.

My tweaks:

-I used farfalle instead of penne.

-I substituted tofu for the chicken, and vegetable broth for chicken broth.

This dish was certainly pretty in the pan—the radicchio, arugula, and tomatoes were quite dazzling as the meal came together. However, I was not so wild about the flavor. I think I just don’t really like radicchio all that much; it’s just a tad bitter. The endive and arugula were delicious, however, and I will definitely be adding them to pasta dishes more often.

My dad made raspberry pudding for dessert. I didn’t have any, but Ryan gladly ate my portion.

Alright, I have much blog reading to catch up on this evening. Good night, all!

  1. Sorry to hear about your travel nightmares! my worst-I once sat on the runway at London Heathrow for 4 hours. Oh, and this was AFTER a 9-hour flight from Kenya. Soooo yea basically by the time I got home to Boston I spent almost 20 hours sitting on planes. Oof.

  2. Tell me about flight delays and long waits at the airport. At the end of June, the flight I was going to get from Austin to Houston got delayed and they said I would miss my connection, so I could only fly out to Brazil he following day. And my other two flights to get to my city were delayed, so I arrived in Fortaleza almost 2 hours later.
I am glad you are home and enjoying your time. You deserve it.

And I looove your donut pans!! That reminds me of Mama Pea. I cannot wait to see pics of your yummy donuts.

  3. I’m so sorry about your delayed travels– what trouble that is! I hate when flight info isn’t accurate as I’m one inpatient person. Gotta work out that. :)

Yay for being home and doing everything you enjoy. Soak it all up, girl!

  4. You know, I must be lucky, because I don’t think I’ve ever had an major travel issues. Sure, flights have gotten delayed, but never for very long, which is surprising because I used to do so much flying for skating in the winter in Canada – you’d think we’d run into weather delays all the time!

And I’m so with you on those triscuit thin crisps – so tasty!

  5. Dude, Delta freaking sucks. I will never fly them again!

    BroccoliHut Reply:

I know, right? Least organized airline ever.

  6. Ugh I am soo jealous of those donut pans! I want some haha. Sorry about all the travel mix-ups, glad your home now :)

  7. bahhhh! Glad you’re back home safely after all the airline craziness. Love the zebra bowl and all of your awesome shopping finds (can’t wait to go clothes shopping again). That hummus from Publix is one of my favorites!

  8. Delta and I DO NOT have a good relationship! BUT the kicker is that they are the main airline in and out of Minneapolis so I fund their stupid antics all the time. But you made it home : ) enjoy

  9. I have had an air-travel nightmare thanks to American Airlines and their inability to provide the vegetarian meals that they even confirmed I had ordered for not one, but two international flights. (If you want to read the whole looooong ordeal here: http://veggingoutinttown.wordpress.com/2010/10/22/vegetarians-dont-fly-american/).

Is that one of those infinity pools? They look so awesome!
