Adventures in Dog-Sitting
Some of you may recall when I first introduced my sister’s boxer pup, Greta. She’s grown up quite a bit since then–she now has enough strength and spunk to knock me over with ease. Along with her increasing size and power, dear Greta has reached that age when she must get her lady parts “fixed” so as to prevent any unexpected pups. She had the operation yesterday morning, and while she’s recovering nicely, she needs constant supervision to prevent her from picking at her stitches. When her mom had a doctor’s appointment today, guess who got nominated to dog-sit? I don’t mind watching my fur-niece, however–she happily lets me baby her. We spent the afternoon cuddling while watching an MTV documentary on fat camp. Here’s a photo narration:

...then quickly passed out in the midst of raw-hide chewing

Alright, now that I’ve revealed myself as a complete dog fanatic, here’s the food:
Monday
I decided to quiet my incessant appetite yesterday with a slightly more indulgent shake. Worked like a charm.

strawberry-chocolate shake with soymilk, S'mores Spirutein, whole grain graham cracker, & chocolate syrup
Tuesday
I kicked off my Cinco de Mayo with a Mexican breakfast. I derived my inspiration from the PETA cookbook’s Morning Mexico Scramble (p. 27), but I added a few components, namely chili powder, chopped onions, & sliced avocado. This was ah-may-zing. Loved the addition of corn chips in the tofu scramble.

My lunch was another copycat from Kath’s Fruit Soup. Granted, it was just an excuse for me to eat another smoothie throughout the course of the day, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I highly recommend using “dunkers” for your next smoothie:)

Fruit Soup (peaches, banana, spinach, blueberry flax, rice milk, & wheat germ); graham crax

Snackage:
Barney Butter is my newest addiction. I almost bought some at Fresh Market tonight, but decided against it: 1) it cost $9.49 per jar, and 2) we all know that I have more than enough nut butter on hand right now…The Oikos was tasty too–can’t wait to try the other flavors, once I can locate them!

I made another mango-black bean concoction tonight, this time using cumin, coconut, cinnamon, & a bit too much coconut extract. I say “too much” because the dish ended up smelling a tad like suntan lotion. Oops.

Just a reminder that Heather is giving away WildBars–I’ve got my eye on that Mayan Spice! Enter by tonight at midnight for your chance to win!
I am off to continue my job-hunt. Foodie for hire!
Ta-ta for now.

Hello and welcome! I have created this blog for people who love food, especially healthful, vegetarian food.
I have just graduated from Duke University with degrees in English and psychology. I plan to pursue a master's degree in nutrition starting in Fall 2010. Ideally, I would like to combine my love of food and the written word someday as a health writer.

Aww, poor puppy. I remember when my kitty had to get fixed, she was Grumpy Pants! She also had to have a hernia fixed, so her incision was very long (almost her entire underside). She just couldn’t find a good way to lie down that didn’t cause her discomfort. Surprisingly, she didn’t lick at her stiches much, which was good. Hopefully your sister’s puppy heals quickly.
And good luck on the job hunt
Goooood luck with the job hunt for sure! I will hire you as my personal chef and smoothie maker
Lovin the Oikos, i haven’t tried BB but TJ’s PB is good enough for me, and the price is not too shabby!
hahah at least taking care of dogs is easier than kids right?
Caroline,
That puppy dog is the cutest thing I’ve seen all day. Too adorable for words!
I just ate those exact same grahm sticks for breakfast yesterday morning… great minds think alike.
Good luck with the job search!
With Love,
Emily
wow i love that pooch! we have 2 boxer’s in my dog’s class.. super cute dogs. good eats!
Definitely intrigued by the fruit soup! And I splurged on Barney Butter the other day (9 bucks for me too!!), but the hefty price has me using a little less than I normally would because it’s like… spreadable gold in a jar.
mexican breakfast looks so good…and that fruit soup…..mmmmmm……so fresh!
good luck with the job hunt!
Adorable pup
I love the combo of black beans & mango. Yummmm.
haha it’s ok if your meal smells like suntan lotion…I’ve def overdone it on the coconut extract on occasion too lol
Oh my gosh- Greta is still SUPER cute! Awwwwwwwwwww. Love mango and black beans together! Great meal
I love your fruit soup! I often eat my green monsters with a spoon because they are so thick but its never occured to me to put it in a bowl! :~)
Hi, My name is Sophia.
Your sisters dog is beyond cute! I love boxers! Watching pets after they get fixed is hard work, when I got my cat fixed, I had to make a body “sock” out of old pantyhose to cover her stitches otherwise I would have had to shower with her, and not sleep because she is an obsessive cleaner.
I started a new blog at: http://whatyourmommadidntknow.blogspot.com/
I would really love it if visited/commented on my blog.
I would also really like to add you to my blogroll?
Thanks!
I’ve been hoping for more Greta pictures! YAY!!! I love her!
Barney butter and Oikos – two things I’m out of and am now craving! YUM! Good luck with the job hunt!!
Aww poor puppy. She’s so cute!
