An Unexpected Sister
Recently I received a rather ChiO-tastic package in the mail:
So who is this mystery giver of Greek garb? None other than Seth’s mumsy. By sheer coincidence, it turns out that his mom, too, was a Chi Omega during her college years; accordingly she is a bit of an unexpected sister. This association represents a pleasant surprise in that my mom was not in a sorority, and I know no other Chi Omegas outside of my university’s chapter. I guess I was just struck by the far-reaching bounds of the “sisterhood” upon receiving this package.
I am pretty psyched about the ChiO songbook too—I particularly enjoyed reading the lyrics to “The Wonders of a ChiO.”
Were you/are you currently a member of a sorority or fraternity? Why or why not?
If you’re reading Mama Sethski, thank you!!
Onto the food, shall we?
Considering how people rave about the cherry cashew PURE bars, I decided to try the flavor combination in my oats this morning. The verdict? Dang delicious, y’all.
After some serious paper writing and Whole Foods flouncing, I heated up some broccoli soup to which I added more broccoli deliciousness, along with some white beans. I love “doctoring” up prepared soups:)
I had a busy evening, so I didn’t have time to prepare an elaborate dinner. Hummus to the rescue, as always.
Now I am off to Trader Joe’s with Seth—yes, two of my favorite men in one place. Glorious. Ciao.

That is such a great coincidence! I’m not a member of a frat. I had a chance to rush this year, but the only reason I could think of was for the program housing, and that felt like “the wrong reason”
Haha, I loved this: “Now I am off to Trader Joe’s with Seth—yes, two of my favorite men in one place.”
I was just there Sunday and I already want to go back!
your oatbran looks so good! i’ve never tried oatbran before, do you prefer it over regular oats? what is the difference, and how do you make yours, with what oats/liquid what measurements?
i love cherries and cashews, so i think i’ll definitely have to try this combination! i think maybe i’ll add some dried cherries too
Seth’s mom is so cute! Ari’s mom sends me gifts like that too… we’re lucky our boyfriends have such nice moms!
My school didn’t have a Greek system, just a veggie co-op and various “cultural” houses.
How fun that you got that ChiO package! I was a Sigma Delta Tau in college, and my MIL was one too! She was very excited when she found out
Ooh Trader Joes, my second love. Hope you have fun!
I’m not in a sorority..and never will be. It’s just not for me!
5 stars on presentation caroline! love that hummus in the potato and cherry oats with cashews MUST be delicious!
That was so nice of Seth’s mom
We have ChiO here at Tech! I’m in KKG because I’ve met so many people, made good friends, gotten more involved, done things for the community….ok I sound like a recruiter for sorority life hah
awww so sweet! i”m an alpha chi omega- yay!! chi-o is a great sorority
Hi Caroline
I’m a Chi-O as well! I graduated a little over a year ago from UNC. I know, I know, I’m a Tarheel! Can we still be friends? Ha, ha if it helps I transferred to Chapel Hill after my sophomore year so my original chapter was at Furman University. My mom and aunt were both Tri-Delts at UNC so I too am the only Chi-O of my family. Anyway, I love reading your blog and hearing about your adventures at Duke. Have a great night!
aw such a sweet gesture, how funny that she is ChiO too!
I never joined a sorority college, just wasn’t into it i guess
What a great oat creation and I’ve never thought of putting hummus on a sweet potato, yum!
Hi Caroline, I´m a long time reader and first time commenter : )
I truly love your blog and your rainbow inspired meals! That´s what healthy and tasty looks like!
I´m a huge fan of spirutein myself and would love to try your oats combination, as soon as I have used up my PB CHocolate Swirl, Double Fudge Crunch and Peaches ´n Cream*lol*
Thank you for adding me to your Facebook account! I appreciate it very much!!
xoxo
Melissa
Your meals are always so much fun!
Trader Joes is my one true love, I’ve got to say.
How cool that Seth’s mom is a ChiO, too! So sweet of her to send you the goodies.
That sweet potato looks to die for!
I love the idea of “sweet potato & hummus”.
I need to try oatbran one of these days! I always imagine it to be similar texture-wise to cream of wheat- does it need chewed? (Lol- that sounds less crazy in my head). Did you add the Spirutein before/after cooking?
We don’t have sororities in the UK. I would be lying if I said that I understood what they were!
how cute that shes a sorority sister!!! awwww…
ps i think you know this but i was (am?) a DG (delta gamma) at ucla
Thats pretty cool that Seth’s mom is your “sister.” How sweet of her to send you a little care package

Aww how sweet of her!
I’m not in a sorority (but my sister Meg was- she was a Kappa Alpha Theta at Bucknell). I actually live with two ChiOs, so I hear a lot of ChiO talk around the apartment. How do you like your chapter? I’ve heard that the Greek system at Duke is pretty intense.
I am a Chi O from Marietta College. I graduated ’08! I know all the secrets too!
Aw what a thoughtful gift! What a small world, too!! I was wondering how that soup was so now that I know it’s Broccoli Hut approved, I may have to pick it up
Oh how cute! Seth’s mom sounds so sweet. I’m so glad that things are progressing so nicely with the two of you.
You are the queen of doctoring up soups! I learned that from you – you are the master of this. That soup and salad meal looked fab and oh so comforting! Love that steam, too!
Hope you had fun at TJ’s! BTW, I love Trader Joe’s, too. I’d marry him if I could
i didnt know you are a chi-o!!! i was too!
What a cute gift!
My college didn’t have greek life…it was something that turned me off originally but now as I’ve learned more about it, I can appreciate the “sisterhood”
I love Trader Joe’s – wish there was one closer to me!
Hi Caroline….Thanks for the thank you! I love the picture of the shirt and songbook!
