Another Facet of Nerdiness

By now, you are all probably aware of this fact: I’m a nerd, and I don’t care. One facet of my nerdiness of which you might be unaware, however, is my fondness for musicals (See? My infatuation with Glee is only natural). For years now, I’ve been rockin’ out with everyone from the Phantom to Millie to Joseph. Even as a little girl, I used to embarrass my sisters when friends were over by belting out show tunes while I was sitting on the commode—after all, the bathroom is the space with the best acoustics. Duh.

Anyway, I reveal this side of myself today because I will be attending a musical production this evening. My parents and I will be seeing one of my favorites, The Sound of Music. Considering I performed several of its songs in voice recitals over the years, it will take all of my will power not to stand up and join Maria during “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.” I’ll try though.

What about you? Are you a musical nerd like me? Which is your favorite show?

I have a show to catch, so let’s make this snappy.

After a long, hot run this morning, I was craving something savory, and I was quite pleased with the egg-filled pita pockets I came up with, served with magically sweet peaches and bloobs.

For lunch, I had a Greek-ish salad, this time with hummus and feta rather than chickpeas and cottage cheese. ‘Twas tasty, and it filled me up for several hours.

Ever since my most recent visit to Butternut Squash, I’ve been craving sweet potato fries. Although I did not photograph them, I zoinked a few of Seth’s sweet potato fries that came with his meal; I’ve been craving a mound of sweet potato-ey goodness for the past week. Hence, tonight’s dinner:

Alright, off to change into my “theater clothes” and head out. Have a phenom weekend, lovelies!

  1. Ooh~ I am a HUGE fan of musicals, too! My favorite that I have actually seen is The Drowsy Chaperone. It is simply FANTASTIC.

I really haven’t seen many musicals in-person, but I have enjoyed movies based on them like Annie, Sweeney Todd, The Sound of Music…hmm, do Disney movies count? ;] I also have enjoyed the musical created by the band Forgive Durden, in which they invited a bunch of guest singers from other bands to participate. I believe it’s called “Razia’s Shadow.”

Hope you enjoy your theater experience tonight!

  2. pshhhh girl you are much mistaken…musical lovers are NOT nerds!!! this is a legitimate and classy love that we have.

although i have to laugh at your belting from the pot!!! oh my you crazy girl! my fave musical is Light in the Piazza. it was my first broadway show, ever.

  3. it really depends o the musical for me. I love Glee and Grease and all the Disney musicals, (Pocahontas! Mulan! Ariel!), but not so much Rent or Annie. I guess I like for there to be some dialogue mixed in, rather than just mostly songs.

your pictures make my mouth water. :]

  4. I LOVE musicals! I think they’re cool and not nerdy though :) What’s even nerdier? I played in a bunch of pit orchestras for our high school musicals and was always SO jealous of the cast members. Yep, it does get nerdier :)

  5. I love musicials as well! My favourite show is Phantom of the Opera. :) Your dinner looks great as well – love sweet potato fries.

  6. Love of showtunes is ALMOST the height of nerdiness.

I got third place in the national latin translating competition for my region when I was in middle school. How’s that for geekdom?

  7. Thanks for the help last night! We went to McCormick and Schmicks and then to Whole Foods to spend $250 on groceries for me :)

  8. Yes, fellow Gleek!!! haha. Have a great weekend!

  9. Hahaha!! Oh Caroline. As you said that, I was listening to my favorite musical songs on Grooveshark. Looks like I’m just as much a nerd as you! My favorite musical is Chicago…but I’m still waiting to be able to see Wicked!

  10. I’m definitely a musical nerd, too, though I must say my best friend beats me on that one. We’ve spent many a sleepover watching musicals on dvd and belting out our favorite songs. Choosing is much too hard!

For some reason, I have lots of fooodie questions for you today. What kind of oat bran pita do you buy? And what spices do you use on your black beans and sweet potatoes? I don’t mean to sound like an interviewer, but everything just sounds (and looks!) so good!

    Have a lovely weekend!
    xox

  11. Musicals aren’t nerdy at all! In fact a lot of my friends go to musicals whenever they are available- it helps that I’m a musician! ;)
I would LOVE to see Sound of Music live! Most of the musicals I’ve seen have been movies, unfortunately. Someday I’ll hopefully get the chance to experience more live musicals.
    Hope you had fun!

  12. sweet potatoes fries look sooo good, I need to make sun!!! :D
I’m not musical at all…. birth deficiency I guess.

  13. ow- hope you had so much fun at the show! I do enjoy a good musical. Phantom is probably my fav. Yum-o on the eats. Especially like the looks of the bean mix and fries. You make inspirational veg friendly meals. Hope the rest of your weekend is fantastic

  14. It’s funny…I dislike most musicals…but the ones I DO love are incredibly dear to me. My favs are…

    - Sweeney Todd
    - Elisabeth
    - Tanz der Vampire
    - Les Miserables
    - Cabaret
    - Scarlet Pimpernel
    - Jekyll & Hyde (GERMAN version only!!!)

I went through a mad Phantom of the Opera phase as a teenager. I got kind of burned out on it though…and that sequel REALLY makes me irritated at ALW.

I highly recommend Elisabeth, based on what you named as your favs. It’s in German, but the story and music are awesome. It’s basically the Empress of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and her lifelong quest for freedom…and a quasi-romance with the incredibly sexy Der Todd…aka, Death, personified.

    Enjoy your show!!

  15. i agree with ruby red…musicals are classy! i have been a musical fan for pretty much forever, since the first day i got into a costume and experienced singing and dancing on stage. :-) i have seen over 20 musicals so far, and my fave by far is les miserables, although i’ve seen newer musicals like wicked and spring awakening that i really enjoy.

i was in the sound of music as a nun a couple of years ago!
