Awkward Family Photos

We all have them. Don’t try to hide it–you, too, have awkward family photos in some dark closet. For proof that such pictures are quite universal, check out this website. I pretty much peed my pants when I saw some of these photos! Here’s one from the Yoder family vault:

How about you? Do you recall any particularly embarrassing photos of your family?

Oh, yeah. This is a food blog, not a forum for self-humiliation.

Tuesday

Pretty darn tasty smoothie, but I have a random granola question: does granola typically solidify inĀ  humidity? Recently, whenever I dig into my granola box, it’s packed solid, even though it was crunchy and crumbly just a few weeks ago. I am hypothesizing that the increased humidity around here is the culprit.

I tried something new in my smoothie today: cooked oats. I prepared a cup of oats last night and put in the refrigerator to chill overnight. Once blended with my strawberries, etc., it provided a lovely goopy factor in my morning beverage. It was a great way to get my oats while on-the-go.CIMG8618

Take a look at what we received this morning: an Edible Arrangement! My family members who were visiting a few weeks ago sent it as a thank-you. Thanks Scott and Caroline, if you’re reading!CIMG8624CIMG8626CIMG8627

After attending class and scoring some new underpants at American Eagle (7 for $25!), I was ready for some grub. I quickly prepared a bean salad with green beans, pink beans, zucchini, and Annie’s Garlic Herb Dressing (first featured here). I liked this dressing a lot more this time around; it’s growing on me.

For dinner, I made an impromptu tofu dish by marinating tofu slabs in teriyaki, maple syrup, garlic, and a touch of vinegar. A few minutes on the George Foreman (discussed here), and it was good to go. Bok choy cooked with Bragg’s and toasted cashews made for the perfect accompaniments.

One of my kids is always doing something dorky so we have many an awkward photo!

  14. Caroline,

OMG! I have too many of those photos to count. I was a VERY geeky kid. I had huge teeth (Thank GOODNESS I finally grew into those) and glasses. I also had a particular affinity for wearing two, slicked back braids and entirely monochromatic outfits. Not cute. ;P

Does Duke let you bring the grill? I’m thinking about getting one for RISD…

    With Love,

    Emily

  15. my granola always clumps and I live in Scotland so no humidity! I keep it in a bag and just re-crumble it when I use it…am guessing it’s the oil softening and hardening?

  16. I’ve been working on blocking the years 1990-1999 from my memory all together. I sometimes still wake up in a cold sweat thinking about the big bangs I had. *SHUDDER*

  17. Oh goodness, do I EVER have embarrassing/awkward family photos. It’s a good thing I don’t have a scanner, so I “can’t” post any on here…Darn ;)
I’m obsessed with Edible Arrangements…the fruit is so fresh and juicy…PERFECT for a summertime gift! All of your eats look a-mazing, as usual! I NEED to find those mini pitas! What brand are they? I’ve also been meaning to try the Green Super Food powder…how did you like it? I’m not sure if I should try the regular or the chocolate first. Have a great day! :)

  18. cooked oatmeal green smoothie is a great idea!

  19. Omg edible arrangements are the coolest things – I’d take that over flowers any day! My Mom tried to duplicate it for Thanksgiving last year and it didn’t turn out too well… I wish I had taken a picture, it was quite the awkward arrangement lol. She just like stuck pineapple rings on skewers and they kept falling off. It wasn’t pretty!

  20. LOL that website def. made the rounds in my office not long ago. Too funny! I like the idea of oats in the smoothie – definitely the most portable way to get your oatmeal in!

  21. hahhaa…that website is too funny. i could def find some ridic family pics. but my sisters wouldnt be fans of them goin up on HHH, so ill hold off on the humiliation – for now.

  22. nice photo! and I love the edible arrangements…so cute.

  23. That website is hilarious!

  24. looking back at old family photos is one of my faaav activities! i get sucked into 1980s hairdos for hours!

love edible arrangements (!!!) and that tofu — the george forman works miracles, i swear! =)

  25. I have never even considered putting tofu on the foreman grill. Hmmmm. Probably gets rid of the excess water, too. What a great idea! How long do you marinate the tofu for? I have yet to master the art of cooking tofu with a flavorful kick — it usually ends up being pretty bland.
