Back to School, Part I: Gastronomy
As I have indicated in previous posts, today was my first day of graduate school. I kicked off the semester this evening with my first class in gastronomy. As a long-time foodie, the thought of earning academic credit for learning about food and its associated traditions brings me nothing short of pure delight. I knew it was a good sign when the assigned reading included titles such as The Gastronomical Me (MFK Fisher), Gourmet Rhapsody (Barbery), and even Julia Child’s My Life in France. Highlights of today’s class included a “guess the herb” (involving much sniffing and tasting), plus a discussion of our favorite foods. Our assignment for next week: provide a history of your favorite food. Can you guess which food I chose? I’ll give you a hint.
Enough chit-chat about food—let’s get to today’s grub:
More whipped cottage cheese-lovin’ at breakfast this morning.
I took advantage of my full vegetable drawer today and made a mondo salad for lunch.
Once home from class, I put together a simple stir-fry using my beloved broccoli slaw and tofu.
The Food Network beckons for my attention (there’s a special about road food on!). Good night!

I love that broccoli slaw stuff, but never had it warm. Need to try that soon!
Wow, I am so jealous of your class–it sounds like a blast! I may need to check out some of those books just for fun. :]
I’ve never seen whipped cottage cheese before. I’m guessing the texture is just different, like with whipped cream cheese?
Glad you had a great first day! I just blogged about mine
Uh…hummus? Haha, duh!
i just saw whipped cottage cheese last weekend and wonder how you can eat it…. yeah~ as topping for waffles!!! I’ll have to get a bottle.
gastronomy class? sounds fun!
Sounds like a fun class! I think the class I most enjoyed in grad school was complementary and alternative nutrition. The classes that were the hardest were a series of macronutrient metabolism classes, but I definitely learned a ton!
first day of grad school!!!! SO exciting
how good does it feel to be getting into the groove again?
speaking of groove. i would like you to make me that stir fry please. and ship me a box of those mango chunks.
thank you
I always think going back to school is exciting! Your class sounds perfect for a foodie.
And I didn’t click on the link but I’m going to guess…hummus?!
So exciting you’re starting school again! I can’t wait to go back, but until then, I’ll live vicariously through you.
Congrats on your first day! I love all your cute plates
Apart from the fact that I have never tried cocoa dusted almonds and need to fix this misfortune stat, you have the cutest plate-ware and settings!
Congrats on the first day! Very exciting. All the eats look good- I am making stir fry tonight with broc slaw! It makes stir fry amazing. I can’t wait to hear more about your classes
Your class really does sound like bliss for you! I’m sure you won’t have any trouble on your project! x
Oh how I long for a class like that. I know we have some fancy wine classes, but pretty sure gastronomy is not one of my elective options. Le sigh. I shall live vicariously through you instead. And look forward to my food theory lab next semester – because it’s all cooking!
