Bod Pod Fun

This afternoon, you might have spotted me in something like this:Bod_Pod

No, that is no magical giant egg–it’s a Bod Pod, a highly sophisticated device used to measure body composition and lung volume. While highly accurate, Bod Pod testing can be quite expensive.  So, how did I score such a sweet opportunity, you ask? One of the classes I am taking this semester, entitled “Food for Thought,” focuses on nutrition from an evolutionary anthropology perspective. The professor happens to be conducting research involving fat composition, so we students were offered a chance to be tested in the Bod Pod to provide data for his study. Although I was none too thrilled about the daunting prospect of having to appear in front of my classmates in a bathing suit, my curiosity outweighed any anxieties, and I signed up. IMG_0211

The test is quite simple and short: Strap on a bathing cap, climb in, and sit still. Then, I underwent a second test involving a breathing tube in order to determine my lung volume. After that, I was released from the Bod Pod, and the technician told me my results. I must say, the fitness nerd in me came out as he explained my body composition–I was completely fascinated! Here’s a chart that summarizes what he told me:IMG_0213

Anyway, here’s what I ate to fuel myself today:

Wednesday

I’d forgotten how delicious regular old hemp protein is.

Thursday

Considering my elation at receiving my Cream of Wheat yesterday, it probably goes without saying that I had a bowl for breakfast this morning. I kept it old school with raisins, pecans, and maple syrup.

IMG_0208For the most accurate Bod Pod results, we were instructed not to eat for the three hours prior to testing. Hence, I was not able to eat lunch until after being tested. When I finally returned to the apartment at 3:45, I was ready for a mondo salad to fill my cranky tummy. I layered  baked tortilla chips at the bottom of the bowl and topped them with greens, black beans, more tortilla chips, etc. for a crunch-tastic meal.

IMG_0218A few weeks ago, I experimented with apples in my curry. I liked it so much that I decided to incorporate apples again, this time using Ginger Gold apples, which complemented the cinnamon-y aspect of garam masala. I also added curry powder and paprika.

  1. That bod pod looks so futuristic! I’d be afraid to get in because I’d think I might travel in time lol

  2. woooo….. that’s a really fancy machine to test body composition! You’re so lucky to try it out! :)

  3. Whoa, that bod pod sounds awesome! I would love to try it someday :) Seems a lot better than body pinching!

I have some plain old hemp protein powder on hand, and just might make a peach smoothie out of it, thanks to this inspiration and the juicy peaches we have here.

That taco salad sounds fantastic! How did you manage to make such a tasty (and pretty) meal when you were starving? Love the sunflower seed addition!

  4. that curry looks sooo amazing! bod pod is really cool too!!

  5. I’ve always wanted to get my body fat done in that machine! your so lucky!

  6. that’s a cool machine! i got my body fat tested in high school once with those hand held devices but i’m sure your pod is more accurate ;) love the mongo salad! i also love curry but have never made it for myself. you make it look delicioso

  7. hooray for the bodpod! i LOVE it. i have done it 3 times and the girl who runs it at the university did her major project about me and BFL so i have free certificates to do it more.. i am waiting until i get in a bit better shape though ;) love that cute red bowl and the stuff that is in it!

  8. Oooh it’s good to hear you like hemp protein. I like brown rice protein and can’t do soy or whey and have never had hemp b/c everyone says it tastes like dirt?! So I am just kinda scared off but may have to give it a whirl…

  9. haha woah!! cool bod-pod thing. definatly sounds rather interesting :)

your smoothie sounds fan.tastic!! and your apple chick pea curry!?? YUM
    recipe?

  10. I am insanely jealous of your Bod Pod analysis…although I don’t think I’d take it well if I came out with a higher body fat reading than I was expecting…the idea of a body being composed of over 1/3 fat is pretty disturbing! Still, I’d love to have the chance anyway.

Curry looks delicious…I wish my ‘experiments’ turned out as well!

    xoxoxo

  11. What a strange thing! Wasn’t it scary in there?;)

  12. Very cool that you got to use the Bod Pod! That woman in the picture looks pretty excited about it too hahaha. I love the salad you ate afterwards. The little scoops chips make it look so festive! Happy almost long weekend

  13. I’ve seen a bod pod in action in one of my college classes but never have been able to get inside one. Looks pretty neat!

I would be sooo cranky if I didn’t get to eat lunch for so long, either. I think low blood sugar turns me into some sort of monster. Anyway, I love your crunchy salad (and also the cute bowl from your breakfast)!

  14. Lucky you! The Bod Pod looks awesome! Loving the look of that taco salad..Mmmm =)

  15. That sounds really cool! I had mine done with those electrical things you hold, but I don’t think they are very accurate (to say the least!)

    Fruit in curry = heaven!

  16. “curious incident” is a great book! hope you enjoy it. and that bod pod thingy looks totally cool!! I think if I saw someone in one of those I would laugh hysterically. It looks like a spaceship haha

  17. That Bod Pod thing looks ridiculous haha. But I’d definitely try it.

Love putting apples into dishes. Did you make the tofu sour cream from scratch?

  18. ooh, great book!

and the bod pod rocks! I’m a total fitness nerd too :)

  19. i totally want to try that! that looks like too much fun – i have always wanted to get tested for something like that. apples in curry? YES PLEASE!

  20. That taco salad is winning my heart. I am so in love with everything black bean/avocado/vaguely mexican inspired at the moment. YUM.

  21. That bod pod thing is so cool! I love to find out about stuff like that. Lucky!

  22. That bod pod is so neat! So futuristic. It reminds me of that egg chair from Men In Black… I need to find one of those things.
