Bring on the Lemons

So last night was quite trippy. No, I didn’t ingest anything illegal—I participated in a little berry tripping.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the “miracle fruit,” it’s a  berry grown in West Africa that alters your taste sensations. A glycoprotein present in the berry makes sour or bitter things taste sweet: just imagine sucking on a lemon that tastes like lemonade, or guzzling Guinness that tastes like a milkshake.

This event was put on as a fundraiser for the dining committee, of which I am a member. I wasn’t about to let everyone else have all the fun, so I tried it out for myself. Let’s just say that I consumed approximately a pound of citrus (lemons, limes, and grapefruit) by myself—the typically acidic and sour flavor was transformed into crazy-sweet deliciousness. It is particularly notable that I was downing grapefruit, a healthful food that I regrettably cannot stand in the least. Other items available for berry trippers included Sour Skittles, Tabasco sauce, balsamic vinegar, and goat cheese.

A word to the wise: while these items may taste delicious going down, beyond the tastebuds they still have their normal unpleasant after-effects. All that citrus left me with a small tummy ache…totally worth it though:)

In other news, I have been reunited with my blender of late. I had a smoothie last night after my berry tripping…and then another one this morning for breakfast. Check out the deets:

Thursday

Blueberries N Cream Spirutein with mixed berries. Blended bliss, indeed.

Friday

I was channeling a certain chocolate-covered diva this morning for breakfast. Love me some Banana Blender Cereal.

One of my favorite recipes from ED&BV is the Thai Chick-Un Pizza. Who’d a thunk chickpeas, pineapple, and peanut sauce could be so fantastic together? Anyway, the pizza is actually a little bit labor-intensive for my taste, so I opted to combine the main flavors into a salad form. Broccoli isn’t part of the original pizza recipe…but who can resist a little extra broc?!

Now I am off to a meeting for a group project…then it’s the weekend! Ta-ta, dearies.

  1. Just came across your blog….love your bowls and plates!!

  2. So you’re saying that Guinness doesn’t always taste like a milkshake? ;)

  3. Ahh! You’re so brave! I won some of those tablets in a blog contest once, but I was too scared to try them. (In my defense, I also didn’t want to take tablets sent to me in the mail from someone I didn’t really know!)
But after hearing you fun story, I really want to try! Haha I can just imagine you sitting there, devouring super-sour lemons without even making a face!

  4. Anything from ED and BV is bound to be a winner. Great looking dish!

  5. I saw that berry tripping sesh in the Chronicle and I wanted to go–but totally forgot. We talked about that berry in Diet and Nutrition last year. So cool!!

…I was gonna ask if the usual effects are still felt. I guess so :)

  6. Good luck with your group project – those can sometimes be frustrating. Gahhh. And enjoy your Friday girlie!!

  7. Heh…the first sentence made me laugh :)
The Thai Chick-Un Pizza is a favorite of mine too. I could swim in that sauce

  8. I cannot get enough chickpeas lately!!! That salad looks great :)

  9. That banana blender cereal looks amazing!

  10. i’m so in awe of the miracle berry…i read an article on it a while ago but never heard of anyone i knew trying it—so cool! haha yikes citrus overload. i can’t even imagine how things must have tasted, hopefully i’ll get to find out someday :)

btw im relaly glad wii isnt reality bc i sucked the first (and only) time i played it…i had my ass handed to me on the tennis court, and im pretty competitive.

  12. oooh glad you had a good time at berry tripping! I went to the event last year and IT WAS SO COOL. I probably ate more than the event fee in fruit, plus at the end of the event, they let everyone take home as much of the leftovers as we wanted (ice cream, orange slices, etc).

    ENJOY SNOW!

  13. The berry tripping sounds awesome! I’ve heard of events like this before- so crazy. I really want to try the Thai Chick-Un Pizza-I know this would be a winning meal combo in my book! And of course, I would have the extra broc!!

Hope you have a fabulous weekend

  14. mmm that smoothie and banana blender cereal look wonderful!! I get like that if I eat a lot of citrus too, mostly I get bad canker sores, but I love citrus!!

  15. Sounds fun! Hehe. I’m not a fan of anything sour (exception being sour cream, but I don’t think that counts!)

I would try them if I saw them though…ya know, for kicks ;)
