Canine Cuisine

As I’ve demonstrated in previous posts, I take great joy in baking treats for Yoder clan’s pups—all six of them. Today, however, I think my devotion to these dogs has reached a new level.

The resident “big dog” of the household, Chester, was moping around the house this morning. He’s never exactly an energetic pooch, but today he seemed extraordinarily sluggish and melancholy. His sighs were particularly audible, and when I sat down to breakfast, his paw was conspicuously absent from my knee.

Clearly, Chester was in a funk. What better way to remedy a case of the blues than to prepare a bowl of comfort food? For Chester, that means oatmeal (he is my dog, after all). Accordingly, I lovingly cooked up a batch of oats (sans dairy or sugar!). After cooling it with a few ice cubes, I presented Chester with a bowl of love:

Judging by the speed with which he gobbled up the oatmeal, I think he appreciated the gesture. He’s been pretty chipper ever since:)

Do you feed your dogs “people” food? Do you ever cook for them? I feed the dogs whole foods (e.g., oatmeal, occasional meat scraps, etc.), but I don’t like to give them anything processed or sweetened.

Now that I’ve revealed myself as a hopeless “dog person,” let’s get onto the grub.

Way back when I first purchased Eat, Drink, & Be Vegan (ahem, best cookbook EVER), I tried Dreena’s Creamy Cashew Dip, and was amazed at deliciousness. I made a modified (un-veganized) version this morning as a topping for my waffles.

As for my lunch menu, I decided to whip up a batch of Tomato Basil Hummus. Yum.

My creative juices were flowing this evening, as I prepared a B-Hut original recipe. I coated slabs of tofu in a homemade spicy peanut sauce, then dredged them in shredded unsweetened coconut. Placed atop a mango slaw, it was perfection. Recipe to come.

Alright, I have a Skype date to attend. Good night!

we feed our dog our “empty” plates.. like let him lick them clean.. of course leaving behind some goods to munch on!!

  3. Greta and Rainer are very upset that you did not cook them oatmeal today. Coincidentally, today as I was purging the pantry I dropped and spilled a big can of rolled oats all over the kitchen. The dogs ate it up as I cleaned. Greta also thoroughly enjoyed her first sample of natural Cheetos today :)

  4. Hey :)

That’s too cute you cook for them.

I’d love to cook for my puppy LIly but I’m too paranoid and honestly, she is so hyper now , between studying and her I am down .

I feed her organic whole food , and vegetables and certain fruits from the fridge.
I never feed her any of our meals aside from me chopping veg or fruit, but I am interested in making my own dog biscuits or doing the whole rice and chicken homemade dog food.

  5. Have you made anything from the doggy food book?!! I saw things in there even I would love to eat :)

I should make my own Tomato Basil hummus seeing as how I am devouring the TJ’s one.

  6. Sweet that you made oats for your dog. :) Totally agree with you about ED&BV!

  7. awwwww so sweet that you made the puppers some oatmeal! I will occasionally make Frank some turkey and rice. We feed him steak for his birthday too. Other than that and the occasional piece of cheese, no human food! Love your hummus (you know this ;) ). And I am finally trying to make my own tofu at home. I will be leaning on your recipes for sure.

  8. Your puppies are so lucky! I don’t usually feed them people food too keep them from begging in the kitchen but I think my cat wouldn’t mind very much right now. She’s out of food this morning :(

  9. Aww, that’s so sweet! I can’t give my dog human food. Not only does he have a very tender tummy, but if I gave into his puppy-eyed begging just one time… he would never leave me alone!

Oh, and that tofu looks SO good. I wonder if I could do that with chicken? hahah.

  10. Over Christmas my aunt makes dog treats to take to the local shelters but our puppers get their own basket of them as well. We took our dogs for ice cream yesterday which they devoured in under 4 minutes!!

  11. aww so cute!! we would always feed my dog people food…just no chocolate or anything bad for doggies, but he LOVED peanut butter crackers and mainly anything else! haha he wasn’t picky

  12. What an absolutely wonderful dinner creation! I admire your creativity: I certainly do come up with stuff I like, but this summer my dinners have been pretty predictable.

And that cashew dip would indeed be lovely in the banana crepes :)

  13. Aww, what a sweet puppy! I give my dog oatmeal when she’s not feeling well, thanks for the tip about ice cubes — I’d been putting it in the fridge waiting for it to cool off!

My dog gets oatmeal (if she’s sick), carrots and bananas. That’s about it for people food. Oh, and sometimes I let her lick the peanut butter off a knife or spoon (once I’m done with it, haha).
