Canine Nutrition
In case you haven’t noticed, Margot’s impending arrival is an event receiving much of my attention these days. I apologize if you’re tired of hearing about all things pooch-related. At least tonight’s dog-themed post is also food-centric!
I am a firm believer that dogs deserve food that is just as wholesome and nutritious as what we humans eat. The breeder from whom I am getting my puppy agrees, and she provided the following list of grocery items to have on hand for Margot:
Grocery Store Supplies
- Low Sodium Chicken Broth – Can be frozen into “broth cubes” which are very soothing to a teething puppy.
- Peanut Butter – For Kong stuffing.
- Cottage Cheese – Whole cottage cheese only, not low fat.
- Canned Pumpkin – A couple spoonfuls of plain canned pumpkin added to a dog’s meal will give him the extra fiber necessary to take care of this problem. Dogs love the flavor too.
- Frozen Vegetables – A frozen green bean or carrot is great to sooth the sore gums of a teething puppy.
- Oatmeal– Soothes gastrointestinal discomfort that a pup might experience while transitioning to a new home.
- Hot Dogs, Chicken or turkey – Keep some frozen hot dogs or chicken on hand. They make great potty training treats.
For you dog owners out there, do you serve your dogs any of the same foods you eat? Which ones? What are some of their favorite foods?
Chester really loves peanut butter—we always give him the jar to lick clean! Ted on the other hand sticks to meat, meat, and more meat.
Onto my eats for the day!
For breakfast, I added a little tropical twist to my oat bran with some kiwi-coconut action.
Today’s lunch was improvised from the dwindling contents of my pantry. It ended up being a very soggy black bean and kale burrito.
Tonight, I had the pleasure of dining with Seth and his parents at Bonefish Grill. I was tempted to stick to my usual salmon or tuna, but ultimately I decided to expand my horizons and order trout. It was delicious, particularly in combination with the spicy-sweet mango salsa.
Alright, I am beat. Good night, all!

this was really interesting and informative! thanks!
what kind of dog food are you going to use? My dog has a sensitive tummy, and Blue Buffalo has been great!
we had to switch to pedigree… he was getting allergic reactions to other stuff.
ahhh- I KNEW I recognized those Vegetables!!!!!! Which bonefish did you go to ??? i worked at both of them, got Sarah the job at the north hills one… I love me some bonefish.
I’m loving your zebra breakfast bowl!
My dog gets very little human food. She loves baby carrots, but her FAVOURITE things is yogurt…guess she’s a health conscious dog
Next time you go, you have got to get the Chilean Sea Bass. It is the most expensive fish on the menu other than if they have lobster, but it’s worth it. My favorite fish had been salmon before I tried this!
We traditionally fed Frank higher quality dog food, but since his recent issues- hes been eating a lot more brown rice and turkey. This seems to be doing his body good, so I am considering sticking with this for him
He used to like fruit on occasion but doesn’t seem to care for it any more.
mmm that breakfast! The kiwi and coconut butter on top look just perfect. Glad you had a nice dinner out- its always fun to try new things
I LOVE this post as my dog is my absolute LIFE! I always try to find new little recipes to make for him since, well, he deserves it!
Can’t wait to make this up for him, love your blog!

My pooch eats Spot’s Stew. I pretty much never feed her people food, except for a few scraps of whole wheat bread products (she doesn’t like white flour) and a little cream cheese to take medicines. She has a very, very sensitive stomach and is an even pickier eater.
