Cheap Thrills

In recent weeks, as my workload has reached new heights, I’ve discovered the perfect study break: a trip to Target. This means of providing a mental break is particularly apt because:

a) Target houses everything from cute dishware to seasonal wrapping paper to discounted foodstuffs…meaning I can flounce through the aisles, no matter my mood.

b) Most items are safely within my price range. Sports bras for $5?! Score!

c) It is located across the street—seriously. Excluding occasions in which I might want to buy an artificial Christmas tree (coming soon to the B-Hut), I walk to the store.

Yesterday afternoon’s agenda included one such study break (Yes, I went twice yesterday—once by myself and once with Seth. Don’t judge). After much browsing, I left the store with just a few items that will surely aid me in the coming winter months:

  • Festive placemats, because my black backdrop (i.e., my table) is just getting too boring.
  • Gloves, because I need something to alternate with my fleece leopard pair.
  • Peppermint tea, because I am running low on the Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride flavor.

All for less than eight bucks. Who says luxury has to be expensive?

What do you consider your cheap thrills?

In between Target runs, I did manage to eat a few tasty meals.

This morning’s bowl of oat bran was inspired by everyone’s favorite oatmeal raisin cookie. I must say, the end result was pretty authentic-tasting.

Fresh herbs were on sale last week, so I stocked up, presenting the perfect opportunity to make Hemp Herb Hummus.

Class was unexpectedly cancelled this evening, so I seized the opportunity to make a more time-consuming recipe, good ol’ Cashew Ginger Tofu.

Alright, off to work on yet another research paper. Woo.

  1. I love Target! I spend way too much money there!

  2. Target is the best. I actually love their cheap long sleeved shirts and I just ordered a pair of boots form there. How fun that class was canceled tonight. The resulting extra time dinner looks gorgeous. Love the looks of that sauce

  3. You are brave for living across from a Target…I’d go broke!!!

    I kid. Well…not really.
In Florida they have “super targets” where you can get groceries and fresh produce as well.
Not the most friendly way to get produce.. (kind-of like Walmart) but heck.

  4. I don’t know how you do it: every time I go to Target, some kind of strange time warp occurs and hours late I’m straggling out, dazed, arms laden with things I didn’t know I’d wanted or needed.

  5. I recently went to target and stocked up on some much needed, cheap holiday foodie items: Libby’s pumpkin (do I hear the cries of joy), Coconut thai tea, dark chocolate….. :) I love Target!

  6. Good luck with the schoolwork! This time of year is always craaazy.

  7. Target rocks. I go there sometimes if I have a half hour to kill and the weather is bad…it will keep me and 3.5 yr old skylar entertained…and helps us spend $ we really dont need to..ha!

  8. I love target too!
We also have Big W and Kmart (not sure if you have those in the US?), which are similar types of places, and luckily (or perhaps unluckily for my wallet), I have one of each very close to my house, and work. I love going in there in the summer and just walking around under the air conditioning, I seriously will waste hours just to get away from the heat!
Ikea is even worse…the amateur housewife in me comes out and I spend sooo long wandering about, pretending my shoe-box apartment is as nicely furnished as all their little displays!
That cashew ginger tofu looks so good btw!
    Laura :)

  9. I like making trips to TJMaxx, Home Goods & Marshall’s to see what I can find a bargain on – especially this time of year. They’re great.

  10. We all have to get our thrills somewhere :) I’m glad you got yours today!

That tofu looks delicious. It just reminded me that I haven’t made tofu in ages. Need to change that, promptly.

  11. Sadly I can only go to Target if I decide to cross the border, which could be anywhere from a 1 hour to 3+ hour trip! And to be honest – the one in Bellingham is pretty lame. I’m thinking I’ll need to head all the way to Seattle to have a truly excellent Target experience.

  12. I love that you always “flounce” and “frolic.”

  13. Per the comment above, you do indeed use the words “flounce” and “frolic” a lot. I love it. It makes me feel as though I’m living in a Katherine Mansfield story.

    Gotta try that hummus!
