Doctor’s Office Jitters

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, today marked the date of my nuclear bone scan—a procedure suggested by my orthopedist to verify the absence/presence of a stress fracture in my hip. I’ve never had this type of bone scan before, and to be honest, I got a little jittery about the whole thing. A radioactive injection? I have to drink how much fluid? Agh!

Generally speaking, I’m quite comfortable in doctors’ offices; I don’t often get nervous about letting the MD poke and prod at me. That being said, there are a few occasions in which I recall feeling afraid:

1. My first consult at the eating disorder clinic. I had no idea what to expect during that appointment—all I knew is that the doctor was going to want to make me change my eating habits and break from my “safe” diet of lettuce and jelly beans. That scared the crap out of me.

2. My first encounter with anesthesia. When I was a senior in high school, I had major jaw surgery for which anesthesia was necessary. I was terrified of how it might affect me—what would I say? What would I do? The prospect of not having complete control over my actions was terrifying.

3. My first appointment with the gynecologist. I don’t think I have to explain this one. For the record, I still dread these appointments.

What about you? Do you get doctor’s office jitters?

I calmed my nerves a bit today with some seriously good eats.

This morning’s breakfast featured yet another gem from the Target clearance section. Chocolate PB!

Lunch was an improvisation involving whatever I could scavenge from my fridge. Seth and I are heading to Asheville tomorrow, so my fresh produce supply was a tad limited. The end result was pretty freakin’ fantastic, if I do say so myself.

I upped my squash quotient for the day even further at dinner with a batch of Pumpkin Bulgur Chili.

With that, I bid you good night. The next time I check in, we’ll be settled into our cozy cabin:)

  1. The doctor is fine for me, but I HATE the dentist. Get out of my mouth!

  2. You know we are healthy eaters when a “diminished” produce stash yields a meal like that…

    I know you’re a peeper and man…I got to admit I see some grocery baskets that have NO VEG..and I don’t understand..LOL.

Good luck with all the health stuff…youare doing so good for yourself.

  3. I hope your bone scan went well. HAVE FUN IN ASHEVILLE!!!!

  4. The thought of doctors is definitely up there with being one of my main fears in life! That and sharks, needles, and blood! Yes, doctors compare to shakes for me :)

Happy spring break and safe travels!

  5. I’m not surprised you’d be worried about those doctor’s appointments: those are stressful situations for anyone.

Good luck with your x-ray and I’ll keep everything crossed that there’s no stress fracture there: I’ve had problems with hip alignment and scoliosis causing running injruies and having to take time off so I know how heartbreaking it can be.

  6. I still get the jitters, too. I was put under general anesthesia when I had my wisdom teeth removed and was a wee bit nervous about how I would react. When my sister had the same procedure, so laughed, giggled, and made jokes due to the anesthesia. I don’t remember much after waking up, which is probably a good thing : )

  7. have a wonderful time in asheville! love hiking (mt. mitchell = hard core and awesome!) and eating there (laughing seed, cucina 24 were our favorites)! if you have time, the grove park inn is fun place to go and hang out, too.

i think the doctor him or herself makes such a difference (and i hope that for MY patients, i make things really calm and nice and easy!). i recently had to get a really painful GYN test and it SUCKED, but the OB doing it was so nice that it really, really helped with the whole experience.

  8. I think I tweeted this to your earlier, but don’t worry about the bone scan too much! It’s a relatively painless procedure (besides the initial injection, but that’s no different from any other immunization) and you get to sort of zone out and nap for an hour or so when the machine is scanning you. Good luck! You’ll take it like a champ, I’m sure.

Oh and the first time I had real anesthesia was when I had my appendix out last fall- I ended up having a panic attack when they took me off it and I’m pretty sure I was screaming and swearing at the nurses becuase I thought I couldn’t breathe. They were like “um, you’re yelling at us, so that means you can breathe.” oops.

  9. Hope your appointment went well!! : )

Yeah, I dread doctor’s appointments. In fact, I’m good at putting off even calling in for appointments. I appears that I dread making them about as much as I dread going to them. But funny thing is … once I’m done, they’re never really as bad as I made them out to be in my head, ha.

  10. I get the jitters when I’m just sitting in the an empty office and WAITING. I actually don’t mind the dentist bc he always compliments me and I leave feeling like a whole, new and clean person! ha

  11. Doctor, OB/GYN, dentist… None of them bother me! Anaesthesia’s good by me too, haha. I actually was interested in becoming an anaesthesiologist – I found it really intriguing and purposeful.

Aside from the jitters, I hope your appointment went well! And that your results are favourable as well. :)

That chocolate PB looks divine! Does it taste just like the one made by PB&Co.? It’s been sitting in my cupboard for ages, and I haven’t tried it yet…

  12. I’ve always been the same way about doctors. I don’t know what it is, but they just freak me out. Luckily, now I have a more natural&holistic doctor who I totally love. I can also relate the feeling nervous at the dentist, too. I love my regular dentist, but unfortunately, I have to get my wisdom teeth out in a few months and am not thrilled about it. I’m so worried about having an IV and anesthesia. Anyway, my advice for you is just remember that this appointment will hopefully help you get better by revealing the cause of your pain. It’s one step in the right direction towards more running :D .

Your lunch looks so fresh and vibrant! I actually said “wow” upon seeing all the colors. Love it!

    Have a lovely day!

  13. I thought I was going to die when I got my wisdom teeth taken out. And I’m like you – I was more worried about what I would say than the pain!

I hope the procedure went well! And yay cabin! :)

ps – I made your creamy beet hummus last night – so colorful and soo good!

  14. Hope everything with the doc went well! Oh yes- the first gynecologist appointment…I was TERRIFIED. Now that I’m pregnant…these type of appointments seem oddly normal haha. Your breakfast looks great. What a great clearance find. And now I’m totally craving chili!

  15. I hope your doctors appointment went okay! I always get the jitters as well. Not for the typical check up or anything, but definitely for those other times. Ugh.

I’m glad to see you at least ate some yumminess to make up for it! :D

  16. Hope your appointment was a breeze! What a great find at Target…you sure know how to make oat bran look fabulous!!!

  17. doctors are definitely not my fave! hope things went well. :)
your chocolate peanut butter sounds amazing!

  18. I get anxious and jittery before the appointments. The actual appointment is always much easier than I expect, and goes fine, the needles don’t hurt as much as I anticipate and they don’t laugh hysterically at my embarassing questions and I leave feeling great. But, it’s the waiting room part. I am painfully punctual, so I end up sitting in waiting rooms for 15 to 30 minutes sometimes, just sweating and panicking about the appointment. Bleck!
