Fashion-Free

Ever since high school, I’ve always made an effort to look at least presentable for class. My hair is usually blown-dry straight or neatly pulled back; my clothes are generally wrinkle-free and involve no elastic waistbands;  and my shoes are typically the highlight of the outfit:) These habits were only reinforced upon matriculation at Duke—girls here often look like they could have come straight off the runway with their designer threads and perfectly coiffed manes of long hair. As a result, T-shirts and yoga pants have been reserved for workouts and sleeping for me…until now.

Last week, amidst presentation preparation and study sessions, I thought, “Ugh. I just don’t feel like trying today.” So I threw on my old sneaks, a T-shirt and a pair of purple Soffes, and threw my hair up in a messy bun. Eureka! All day, I was relaxed and comfy, with no worries of wrinkling myself or messing up my ‘do. I had no classes today (nor will I until August!), so I again seized the opportunity to have a fashion-free day—life’s a lot simpler without fancy clothes or make-up.

While the occasional day off is greatly appreciated, my selective girliness shall return soon enough. I mean, I can’t let my killer shoe collection go to waste:)

Do you ever take a “day off” from fashion?

As I mentioned in my previous post, my camera card has reached the end of its lifetime, I’m afraid, so this morning’s breakfast photos were tragically lost. I made a big bowl of triple berry oats, featuring raspberries, blueberries, & strawberries. I topped all of that berry-tasticness with a blob of almond butter. Here’s a stand in photo with similar ingredients:

For lunch, I enjoyed the only kind of leftovers I like—lentil loaf. As I’ve mentioned before, my stance on leftovers is this: life is too short to eat the same thing twice. The exception to that rule is lentil loaf, as it makes a pretty mean sandwich the next day.

My tummy began grumbling early this evening, around 5:30. What gives? My tendencies toward the senior citizen lifestyle become more plentiful by the day. Anyway, I prepared myself a big tofu stir-fry and topped it off with some of those agave-roasted cashews that were so kindly provided me by Seth’s parents. They added the perfect sweet contrast to the salty stir-fry. Yummage.

OK, I am now off to spend a little quality time with my Google Reader. Be back soon!

  1. I used to dress up about 90% of the days in high school–heels some days, jeans at the very least, and cute tops. I rarely repeated outfits within the same month! The other 10% I wore sweats and that % grew as I ended senior year.

Then I got to Duke and all got tossed out the window. I should win an award for my fashionable sweats despite the runway gals that stroll the streets of main quad. Sweats are amazing!

  2. Lentil loaf sandwich looks amazing. Yum!!!

I’m a total fashion free senior citizen. Since my job requires comfy clothes, I live in yoga pants, and I like to be in bed by 9 PM. Dinner at 5:30 sounds good to me. :)

  3. LOL that’s so funny! I told you we’re long lost twins!

  4. I go to school “fashion off” EVERYDAY!!! :D

  5. oh my gosh….I could not have gone to a school like Duke (even though its gorgeous and amazing in every way!). I am totally more of a comfort vs. fashion girl. Everyone at Penn state goes to class in whatever they feel! Sometimes dressy-er but mostly comfortable :)

Ow- those cashews sound fantastic and I’m loving the looks of your stir fry. i can’t wait to go back to that restaurant and have another one like that!

  6. what recipe do you use for your lentil loaf? i’m not one for leftovers, either, so the fact that you would eat this for leftovers speaks volume. although i’ll eat the same thing twice if i really like it, i like to make it fresh and have the option to change my mind. i just hate wasting food!

congrats on finishing up the year strong and relaxing :) !

    have a lovely day!

  7. Caroline, every single day is a “Day Off” Fashion for me. Hahaha!

  8. Better question…do I ever take a day ON for fashion?? I like to be comfortable :D

I’ve seen girls here wearing sundresses…at an 8 am class… (it’s a bit much for me lol)

  9. I always like to dress decently for class, too. This year, I have night class, and I usually would run right after, so I got used to wearing workout clothes to class. Kinda nice though, right?!

Your tofu stir fry looks so good. I’m trying to incorporate a moderate amount of soy back into my diet (had problems with it in the past), and I really love stir fry.

  10. I do “take days off” but I always am so fearful that that will be the day that I run into someone from high school or my hot doctor at the grocery store. It’s ridiculous, really. Let’s all cut ourselves some slack!!!

  11. I was much more into fashion in high school. At my college, everyone dressed down! Like to the point where I’d be embarrassed if I dressed too nice. I guess you don’t have cold winters down there. That definitely play a role in getting ready in the morning!

  12. I need to make lentil loaf again…been, years?!

I am not working/studying right now and it has been so liberating to just throw on jeans and a sweatshirt without getting jazzed up!

  13. Hey Caroline!
I’m a new commenter, and I just wanted to tell you how much I love your blog! All your food always looks so delish- I’m going to have to make that lentil loaf!

I totally have days where I feel like being fashionable, some where I just aim to look ‘presentable’ (i.e., actual pants in stead of sweats or leggings and a shirt that coordinate), and then those days where I am perfectly content to wear gym clothes ALL day :)

  14. MMMM Tierra farms is the best thing ever!!

You know I finally started taking a little more care to be more presentable no matter what errand I’m running, just to make me feel better.

  15. sometimes i have (get?) to wear scrubs, so the rest of the time i like putting a little thought into my outfits! dresses are my favorite for being deceptively easy but presentable. but i’m always on a quest to try to look more put-together!

  16. You must come to the west coast – every day would be a “fashion free” day by your standards! Seriously – yoga pants are a staple, with your Lululemon hoodie and a Starbucks in your hand. Relaxed fashion = west coast fashion. And I am so grateful for that!
