Feed a Cold

Although I am typically not one to believe folklore when it comes to health, after today, I might change my mind. Have you ever heard the saying, “Feed a cold, starve a fever?” My appetite was crazy throughout the day–despite my many dips into the peanut butter jar and granola nibbles, my stomach still demanded more food. Perhaps it was my body’s way of telling me to “feed the cold” from which I am currently suffering. What are some old wives’ tales you’ve heard regarding health?

Here’s how I fed my insistent appetite today:

Sunday

I found my dad’s MixMyGranola stash in the pantry–it made an otherwise meh smoothie quite delectable.

Monday

After much indecision, I finally decided on a tasty breakfast this morning: Banana Fingers. This version featured Fiber One, cinnamon spiked yogurt, almond butter, and a bit of pumpkin that I sweetened up with maple syrup.

Broccoli slaw stir-fry always makes me feel better, especially if it involves cashew butter:)

More comfort food was on the menu for dinner. I prepared another batch of Pumpkin Bulghur Chili, using black-eyed peas this time instead of kidney beans. Delish.

That pesky thing known as homework beckons, so I will bid you good night. Be back soon!

  1. I hope you feel better before making the trek back to schoolio! Your banana fingers are so adorable! I want a bite! I usually have a weirdly low appetite when I have a cold. Something about having a wretched, sore throat makes me meh about food. See ya soon!

  2. Yum, I want some banana fingers! Especially dipped in pumpkin :) The only wives tale I’ve heard relating to food is to have a spoonful of honey when you have a sore throat. I used to just use it as an excuse to eat honey when I was little.

  3. The banana fingers looks delicious. I’ll try it out soon. I think I will freeze them to make them a yummy frozen treat.

  4. My grandmother has told me eating a corn on the cob that I was going to get fat from all the corn oil, but it was ok that she was eating a really creamy soup because cream only flushes out your system and doesn’t add anything. I don’t think I’d listen to her advice, though

  5. Those banana fingers look amazing. Feel better – I am a heavy tea with honey drinker when sick. My mom calls tea the “universal panacea.”

  6. Oh em gee, your food looks so incredible today I’m sure your cold is running in the other direction as I type this! Haha, I know some of those things are old wives tales, but I always “feed a cold” and it seems to work. I know my family has more crazy South American traditions that for some reason will not come to mind right now.
I always get that broccoli slaw but I’ve never thought of cashew butter sauce- must try! And I love your banana fingers and am far too excited that it’s now pumpkin season!

    Hope you feel better soon!

  7. Whoa cool banana fingers!

homework is pesky! that reminds me, i have homework as well!

  8. Feel better my dear! I’ve never heard of THAT old wive’s tale. but then, I’m Asian so we probably heard different ones…Does that mean that when you have a fever, you have no appetite?

  9. ah. i hope you feel better soon! I have never heard those sayings before.. about the feed a fever.. etc. strange!
I just always be sure to get in lots of liquids!
banana fingers!? brilliant! i adore all your eats .
    xx

  10. Since you combined a orange with couscous, I think you’ll love a recipe a recently made for couscous and orange marmelade chicken (or tofu), you can find it here:http://julialivingfree.wordpress.com/2009/09/30/just-some-eats/.
Hope you’ll have a great week!

  11. Hmmm. My favorite old wives’ tale is eating a spoonful of PB to cure hiccups. I get them often, and this is the only one that helps!

Feel better, Caroline! I hope your cold is only one of the 24 hour bugs instead of the nasty… never seems to go away for a while ones.

  12. I was always told that if you leave the house with wet hair, you catch a cold which apparently isn’t true. Though it’s not pleasant anyway unless it’s sunny and warm out :P

  13. Feed the cold, yes! I’ve heard that one! and feed your body to get the energy to fight back!
that banana fingers look really good! :)

  14. Rest, hydrate, and nourish.

  15. I always subscribed to the theory that you feed a fever, feed a cold and feed anything else that hurts, aches or causes even minor discomfort. With those meals you whipped up today–banana fingers?!?–you should be well on the road to health :)

  16. i love your banana fingers! so creative.

  17. banana fingers? YUMMMMMMMMMMMM.
I hope you feel better soon lovebug! :)

  18. I have heard the “feed a cold” wive’s tale before. Hey, any excuse to eat alot is okay with me ;)

Also drinking 7-up for sore throats is something we do.

  19. A wive’s tale doesn’t come to mind, but I think my mom helped me develop a “superstition” about food. When I was little, it was “good luck” to eat scrambled eggs and peanut butter toast before any “major test” at school. Normally I just ate cereal, but I went out of my way on test days *just in case* :P

  20. I’ve heard all kinds of healing remedies associated with Apple Cider Vinegar… not sure they are really “wives tales” because I think most are true! Hope you are feeling better. I’m LOVING the banana fingers. I’m not a banana lover but my kids are! Those look really kid friendly! :D

  21. Woah that chilli looks like dang good comfort food!! Holler! Feel better soon. x

  22. I gotta try some broccoli slaw stir fry with cashew sauce! I have both in my fridge/pantry too :)

I heard that you’re supposed to drink honey tea (with lemon) whenever you have the flu and rinse your throat with salt water (which actually helps sore throats, I’ve learned).

  23. I love those banana fingers! They looks so good! And I love the crunch of the Fiber One that you used as a topping as well as all those yummy toppings. I hope you feel better. I seem to always have an appetite? Even when I have a cold and can’t taste much, I think that I need to eat more to help fight off my cold. The only time I really wasn’t hungry was when I had food poisoning. And once that passed, I was starving!

  24. love the way you eat and cook and nourish yourself, so many amazingly yummy eats so healthy and creative!

    love your blog :)

  25. Those bananas are precious!! And look delicious!

  26. [...] I mentioned in Monday’s post, my appetite has been out of control for the duration of my sickness, and today was no exception. [...]

  27. I had a cold last week and I definitely had some intense hunger, so I just went with it. Hope you are feeling better soon!
