Figs, Outside the Newton
I’ll be honest. My knowledge of figs is limited. I was first introduced to them as the delectable cookie filling. Once I reached high school I came to know them as a common literary metaphor for fertility (due to their uterus-like shape).
And that’s pretty much where my familiarity with the fig ends. Clearly, there are some gaps in my culinary self-education.
All hope is not lost, however. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I recently purchased a carton of fresh figs so that I may come to know them better. Accordingly, I would love to hear your favorite ways to enjoy this potassium- and fiber-rich fruit.
I already got to experimenting with them for dinner this evening—see details below…
Considering my downright addiction to honey-sesame cashews last spring, it should come as no surprise that I busted open that package this morning for breakfast.
I spent the afternoon at the Panera studying with Seth. My tummy started rumbling, and I was tempted to order my beloved Mediterranean Veggie sandwich…but I resisted the siren song of that cilantro hummus. Instead, I made my Ginger Peanut Tofu salad.
Dinner-time is when I got around to experimenting with a few items that are new to the B-Hut kitchen, namely figs and Laughing Cow blue cheese.
Alright, I gotta go prepare for food lab tomorrow—we’re measuring ingredients. Scintillating, no?
Good night.

I love eating figs with raw almond butter. Yum!
I want to try fresh figs so badly but can’t find them anywhere!

I’m liking the idea of blue cheese LC and figs…must try.
I justtt got into figs this summer. I never really wanted to taste them and my mom was always raving about them. I couldn’t believe what I was missing out on- they’re soo delicious. Not too sweet and such a great consistency. Honestly, after one bite I’ll just put a spoonful of almond butter on top , and the occasional drizzle of honey. So. Good. Your sandwich look amazing! Thats a really good idea.. hm…
I love figs! I am totally going to try that sandwich
I have a great recipe for fig, caramelized onion, and Gorgonzola (you could use your new bleu cheese) pizza on my blog. Check it out!
Hahha I love the way your left leg is extended in that action shot. I rarely sit down and shoot…it’s mostly standing. I LOVE YOUR APARTMENT!
Where is your table and seat covers from!? SO cute!
Never had fresh figs. Can’t say I’ve ever seen them in KY. Looks delicious though.
I could eat figs all day long.
Savory or sweet.
I’ve recently discovered they go great with cheese on a pizza
The BEST way to do figs is to cut the top off and cut a cross into them, then stick them in an oven until they go all soft and gooey. Serve hot drizzled with honey and whatever you wish to serve it with, but personally I like them with mascarpone cheese! x
Ack, I have such a squeamish reaction to figs, as I do to so many fruits! But I do love DRIED figs
I haven’t had figs for years but I love having them as surprise in salad!
I’ve only ever eaten fresh figs straight up, but I like the idea of them with blue cheese…
I think that THE best way to enjoy figs is to be somewhere where they grow naturally, and then eat them straight from the tree. That is what I did during my stay in Greece and I can call this authentic culinary experience no less than heavenly!
I have never tried figs but that sandwich sounds pretty good despite that I I have never been too fond of bleu cheese…
i don’t often use fresh figs, either…i think they are pretty expensive here. but they are delish!
your kitchen is so cute!
oh my gosh, i love your chairs! i have never had a fresh fig, the horror. and i have GOT to find that blue cheese. ive looked high and low!!!
The question is – how did you enjoy the figgy sammy? I tried a couple of fresh figs recently, and I wasn’t blown away, but apparently they might not have been fully ripe. They also aren’t those pretty black ones you have.
