Flexibility
I’ve never been a flexible girl, neither in physicality nor in temperament; I’ve always been that girl who can’t touch her toes and gets her panties in a wad when her customary schedule is disrupted. While I am always in search of ways to increase my bodily flexibility, today I wish to discuss the other kind of flexibility, as in the ability to adapt to unforeseen changes.
As mentioned above, I am a very ritualistic person: I wake up at the same time every day without the aid of an alarm clock; I run at the gym at the same time for the approximately same distance; I have my smoothie every night before bedtime. As a result of such rigidity, I have gotten much teasing from those who know me well: “Caroline, sometimes I wonder if you are a robot.”
Recently, however, I have discovered that life can still be quite enjoyable without my seemingly sacred routines. You may have noticed that my beloved smoothies have been conspicuously absent from The Broccoli Hut; I have spent that time instead just being with the people who make me happy. My attempts to be more flexible coincide with my New Years’ resolution to live in the present. The Caroline I want to be is someone who can maintain an organized life yet still enjoy the present and “go with the flow.” Are you a flexible person, or do you tend to stick to a routine like I do?
Alright, self-exploration over. Let’s get onto the goods.
Wednesday
Burger and fries for dinner…well sort of.
Thursday
I woke up exceptionally late this morning, so I didn’t finish up at the gym until close to 1:00. Anyway, I guess you’d call this breakfast.
I was in search of some simple comfort food this afternoon, so I made myself an old favorite: Goddess Garbanzos. Tasty.
Alright, I should probably head to the library to print off a few readings (ugh!). Be back soon!

I am a very routine person as well, you sound just like me when I was a bit younger. After several years of marriage and adapting with life changes in my late twenties, I have learned to go with the glow a bit more. But my true personality will always tend to lean towards the well organized, tidy, yes…perfectionist lifestyle.
I used to be go with the flow and able to adapt to pretty much everything. I would rarely plan anything–work, food, life. Not so much now! It’s funny because at school I plan everything to the max but immediately when I get home, all planning goes out the door.
Anyways, glad you’re boy is helping you live in the present!!
I’m a pretty flexible person–going with the flow makes life much more interesting!
I’m definitely a routine girl BUT I’ve slowly learned to embraced spontaneity. It’s a work in progress!!
i’m definitely a routine oriented person,so the lack of structure in my life while i’ve been out of school has been KILLING ME. can’t wait to get back into some sort of routine
Yay for purple sweet potatoes!! I need to pick some up!
And I’m more of a routine person too. But I’m trying to adapt better!
How do you have such insanely awesome lighting in your house/apartment? Jealous. Also, those dates look like pebbles and that made me laugh.
I’m fairly flexible but at the same time I do have a fairly routine daily schedule and oftentimes changes in that make me anxious. I want to learn to break up the routineness of my everyday life a bit more!
love your burger and fries
haha
& being flexible is something i am working on as well- it is so easy to get stuck in a schedule but life is about spontaneity!
I mostly tend to follow the same routine everyday but don’t fret too much if things go differently….as long as differently doesn’t last very long!
That is totally my “goal” this year. To allow myself to live more in the moment and enjoy! I am very scheduled as well. Love the burger and fries lunch. I’ve never had purple sweet potato! Must try it!!!!
OMG I am such a creature of habit! I get so used to routines and the way things usually are that when something gets thrown at me that is out of the norm, i freak out! I yuse to get extreme anxiety bc if it, and I have learned to be more flexible when it comes to everything! esp food and exericse. Your meals look fantastic! I love the addition of dates in the oats!
i am the opposite of a routine person, haha but i have learned over the years that routines do serve a great purpose. as much as i want to hate on them, i am so much saner with them. that being said, there is something to just being spontaneous, enjoying the moment and always wondering what’s coming next!!!!
love ya girl!
I am the same way – I am a routine person and hate when my plans go astray. I am getting better with it though and trying to increase my flexibiity (and patience).
Purple sweet potatoes! I need to try them!
i am soooooooo like you! i struggle with being spontaneous soo much! I hate surprises in my day, and last minute changes in my schedule! Definitely something I want to work on!!
beautiful food, Caroline!
HAPPY WEEKENDDDDDDDDDDDD!
i’m a total routine person — but with my job i am better at learning to tolerate the unexpected (ie, EXPECT some craziness!). josh also sometimes helps pull some spontaneity out of me!
i think some degree of type-A-ness is okay — as long as we can make it work FOR us and not against!
