Foodies Reunited
This evening marked the occurrence of the inaugural dining committee meeting. I’ve been a member of this committee since my sophomore year, and I love it for many of the same reasons I love blogging: it gives me the opportunity to talk about my favorite subject (i.e., food) with others who share a similarly intense interest in it. The difference among the DUSDAC crew, however, is that the kinds of food we love vary widely, ranging from pizza and beer to fine chocolate to healthful vegetarian fare. There’s diversity in the taste preferences among this blogging community too, of course, but I think we all share a fundamental enthusiasm for nutritious eats. Nonetheless, it’s always intriguing to hear about others’ passion for food and culinary perspectives. At tonight’s meeting, we were lucky enough to have two local Durham eateries make presentations in hopes of being able to sell their food to Duke students, using food points as the mode of currency. These presentations are always welcome because they almost always mean free food for sampling…you’ll have to read on below to find out the deets:)
So, my fellow foodies and friends, take a look at what I nibbled on today:
Sunday
It was the end of the week, so my frozen fruit supply was low. Hence, the “everything but the kitchen sink” smoothie.

leftovers smoothie: peaches, blueberries, strawberries, unsweetened vanilla Spirutein, soymilk, & Pumpkin Flax granola
Monday
A breakfast parfait was on the menu this morning…I figured that as long as I brought my parfait glass all these hundreds of miles to school, I might as well get some use out of it. If you’d like a refresher on my breakfast parfait technique, check this out.

"Warm Cinnamon" H2H

Breakfast Parfait: plain yogurt (with ground cloves), H2H, apple, & raw almond butter

After a meeting with my fellow writing tutors and a trip to Whole Foods, I came home ready for some grub. I attempted to make another layered salad, but it’s not nearly as effective when you don’t have a glass bowl to show all the colorful layers. I’m quite proud of my little fruit salad concoction that I had on the side–I highly recommend the orange/sunflower seed/cranberry combo. Next time I might use Sunbutter.

layered salad with corn, black beans, bell peppers, & salsa; orange segments with sunflower seeds & dried cranberries

As I mentioned above, two Durham restaurants attended tonight’s dining committee meeting and provided a selection of their menus for us to sample. Nosh had the better offerings in terms of health and vegan/vegetarian options. The hummus was palatable, but not fabulous–I have become such a hummus snob. George’s Diner provided nothing that I was willing to eat in that most of the items they brought were fried or contained meat. However, they offer a huge variety, from omelets to home fries to jello, plus they’re open 24/7. After the meeting, I hit up the salad bar for a little fiber action.

DUSDAC freebies: roasted veggies; crackers with roasted red pepper hummus

Dinner B: greens with artichokes, broccoli, tomatoes, & kidney beans; melon

Alright, I am off to do highly productive things like watch ABC Family.

I never thought of joining the dining committee in college. I wish I did! Most of my friends get annoyed when I talk about food too much. I have to watch myself lol. I don’t know what I’d do without the blog world!
Caroline!
I wish I could taste your wonderful meals! Your meals ALWAYS look so delicious. How do you do it? It takes me FOREVER to prepare meals.. (or when I try to make something new) so I always end up eating same thing every day ><;
I wish I could have you as my roomate! =D
Curse those productive things we ought to be doing!
Love your lunch, looks so fresh & vibrant. Might dip my spoon right in
Oh yes, not sure if it’s that important, but I think I like the Chocolate Chip and Cinnamon teddy grahams
Oh sweetheart
you’re the cutest.
I also just wanted to comment on your recent diagnosis because I haven’t yet… I’m so sorry to hear about your medical condition. You’re right, it could definitely be worse, and it’s such a blessing that a simple medication can manage it but please don’t fault yourself for being nervous. News like this is scary for anyone and when you take care of yourself so well it’s beyond unexpected but you’ll be okay, more than okay, and dealing with the entire situation as a whole is bound to make you an even stronger person than you already are. ((bloggie hug))
Hehheee so interesting to actually see the stuff you guys eat at dusdac meetings! Jason talks about dusdac all day long and yet I have 0 idea what you guys actually really do behind those doors ;p
Loved seeing you on the bus today!
mmm dinner B looks yum. that is cool you are involved with such a fun group! you need to get in on some glass bowl action to show off those layers!
Sunbutter…you mentioned it. Holy Moley where have I been?! I just discovered the lusciousness that is TJ’s sunflower seed butter. I am going to blog about it tomorrow but yeah, so good.
Hope you’re feeling strong n healthy today!
That committee sounds so cool–I wish I had developed my interest in food earlier now! It would certainly give me another outlet for sharing my love for food
Although, blogging is a good one already.
Perfect Parfait!

did you decide which company you are going with? i am totes a hummus snob too…if it doesn’t taste perfect, i know where to get the good stuff!

I’d love to have been on a school dining committee (and would have loved it if my school offered stuff like hummus!)
Random question- is the pumpkin granola pumpkin flavoured, or pumpkin spice? I always wondered!
