Fro-Yo Nation
It’s official. Frozen yogurt has taken over the entire country. I know this because the fro-yo frenzy has arrived in full-force here in Birmingham.
Based on the glacial pace at which Alabama catches onto nation-wide trends, the arrival of the yogurt sensation here in the Magic City indicates that it has reached cross-country domination.
As this article explains, there are 10 new frozen yogurt locations here in my hometown. The expansion of fro-yo accessibility is fine by me. Take a look at some of my favorite frosty treats over the years:
Has fro-yo taken over your town yet? What are your favorite fro-yo toppings?
Damn. Now I’m craving fro-yo.
Onto today’s eats!
In case you haven’t noticed, I go through foodie obsessions, and chief among my past obsessions is coconut butter. For some reason unknown to me, however, I’ve been neglecting this food of the gods for the past several months. I liberated my jar from its dark corner of the cabinet this morning to make a batch of my Coconutty-Carrot Cake Oat Bran. The combination of flavors pretty much made my taste-buds sing.
Amidst running a few errands with Mumsy, we came home for a quick lunch. I opted for a simple tempeh salad, made with flax tempeh.
Once dinner-time rolled around, I prepared Matt’s BBQ Black Bean Burgers. For the veg component, I used onions and ‘shrooms, I used oatmeal as the binder, and I baked my patties rather than pan-frying them. They were phenom (yes, I ate multiple burgers), although in retrospect, I wish I had added a little avocado and a dash of Tabasco.
OK, Google Reader beckons for my attention. Later, lovelies.

LOYO! we have to go as soon as you’re back here!
We don’t have froyo where I live in Michigan (crime, right?!), but there were a few places in St. Louis. I compensate while I’m home by making blueberry banana mock froyo.
I pretty much like ALL fro yo
The burgers look yummy and I’d love to make them! but I think the link is wrong…I get sent to a kombucha website.
All those frozen yoghurt photos look amazing! Yum. I don’t think frozen yoghurt is really in the UK. I’ve had chocolate brownie frozen yoghurt before though.
Burgers look great too!
I’m overdue for a tempeh salad, so that was inspiring, but the burgers are TRULY amazing looking! Will have to try them
I’ve been neglecting my coconut butter too! What’s wrong with me?!?
I’d say froyo is taking over the country…which, if you think about it, is a step up from other things
Ha…my dad just picked up that bone suckin’ sauce a couple weeks back. I wonder if he would mind if I used it?
There are absolutley no fro-yo places nearby where I live! Sad, but true.
does it make me a complete failure to admit that i have yet to have fro-yo this summer. my budget doesn’t allow for frozen treats. another reason to add to the list of why i need a man.
That is too funny..because all I want lately is frozen yogurt. I am trying to limit myself to once a week!!! Red Mango Frozen Yogurt is a popular on in my state. It is very healthy..made with stevia and they add live and active cultures.
Oh so the fro-yo thing is nationwide now!? I thought it was just me! It is so hard to find a fro-yo place that carries dairy-free sorbet, though, it makes me sad. Because I do a darn good combo of bananas, berries, coconut, almonds, and Oreo crumbles over sorbet, when available! The one you made with local cinnamon apples and pecans is my favorite combo you made, just by the sound of it!
I love your carrot cake oats too! Coconut butter is the perfect topping for oats because it spreads when it’s warm!
I just did a Google map between where I live and Birmingham…only 3 hours, give or take! If there was a decent place to meet halfway between, we could totally do it! We should both start researching, if you aren’t going to be around after the summer… But I’ll be here til next June! It would be sooo fun to meet you!
we don’t have any fro-yo places near me i don’t think which is a bit gutting..however i’m only rouhgly 8 hours away on the train from Birmingham…so this could be an option!! certainly looks like you’ve experienced a wide range of fro-yo combos over the years! JEALOUS. they all look amazing, espescially the cinnamon, apple and pecan combo! yumm!xx
Fro-yo is definitely a NYC thing, I can say for sure! If they’re nice, they even give us a tiny sample cup (the kinds you usually fill with ketchup and mustard) to taste all of the flavors for free! Love
The burgers look delish!! Hmm but the burger link doesn’t seem to work for me…
Glad you liked the burgers
I love the idea of carrot cake oat bran, sounds delicious!
AHH froyo!! i want some right now with fresh fruit and carob chips! yummayyy
