Fruit vs. Veggie Smackdown
In my experience, you’re either a fruit or a vegetable person; it’s very rare to find an individual who enjoys both food groups equally. As I am sure it will not surprise you, I root for the vegetable team, and not just because broccoli is considered a vegetable. I easily consume at least 5-9 servings per day of vegetables alone, not including any produce of the fruity variety. What can I say? I much prefer the crunch of a carrot to the sweetness of a strawberry.
My sister Katie on the other hand, is the exact opposite. Actually, her eating habits are quite opposite mine in general…but that’s a story for a different post. Katie has been known to eat multiple bananas per day, and I’m fairly certain she is capable of eating an entire watermelon by herself. Her vegetable consumption, however, is abysmal. She doesn’t like salad (tragic, right?), and she isn’t particularly fond of many cooked vegetables either.
Fruits and vegetables are relatively similar in their nutrition contents, each providing plenty of the fiber and phytochemicals that we need for optimal health. Accordingly, it shouldn’t matter much if our produce intake is slightly lopsided in terms of fruit or vegetable consumption.
So which one are you—a vegetable devotee or a flat-out fruit freak?
I think today’s meals demonstrate my affinity for veggies quite clearly…
I attempted to make a Orange Creamsicle-esque smoothie this morning with mixed results. It did indeed taste like the intended frozen treat…but the consistency was far too thin for my taste—I like to chug a good, thick shake. This concoction was more like a slightly viscous juice.
For lunch, I started out intending to make minestrone with quinoa (as inspired by the Jan/Feb issue of Clean Eating), only to discover that I have no quinoa. Sadski. Instead, I used bulgur, which provided a hearty texture that I quite enjoyed.
More veggies for dinner. I can’t get enough roasted broccoli these days—so simple, yet so incredibly delicious.
Yee-haw for the weekend! Have a good one, and I’ll be back Sunday.

Well I AM VeggieGirl, so…. vegetables, FTW
that poster is so cute!
i’m definitely a vegetable lover.
Call me crazy but I love both. Apples and brussels for me please
That’s a hard choice! I love fruit, but there’s no way I could go without eating veggies every day.
Ooh, bulgur- instead of pasta- is a great idea in minnestrone!
Got to admit to being on both team veggie and fruits. I eat several servings of each a day. It’s really down the middle.
such a cute picture!
i like fruits AND vegetables . . . i don’t think i could pick one side over the other!
by the way, have you heard that clean eating mag is going to EIGHT months of the year? i was so excited when i found out!
I am a complete fruit lover, I have to struggle to get veggies in throughout the day!
I can’t pick between fruits and veggies. I eat an apple and banana every day and eat the same veggies every day broccoli, carrots, sugar snap peas, and green beans. I would have to give up any of it!
I am also on the Fruits AND Veggies team, I love them both!
There is not one day I can go without either one, it would be hard to choose to have either veggies or fruit on a certain day, although I would go with veggies if I really needed to choose.
I am another one who never find it hard to get in the recommended servings of fruits and veggies every day, I love veggies more than any other food!

I’m with Matt- brussels and apples. I figure if I am not a carnivore loving both fruit and vegetables makes up for all those weird looks from people
I used to be a fruit lover ALL the way, but now I’ve switched over to the light side. The grass really is greener on the other side
(though I do still love my fruit, I find myself craving veggies and wanting them as snacks and dessert.)
Have a lovely day!

Picking between the two is a tough choice since I legit love both in their own delicious satisfying ways, but my sweet tooth is a strong little bugger so fruits win out by a hair. I just finished eating the biggest veggie filled salad for lunch, but I cannot stop devouring apples right now. They’re amazing!
FYI – your sister made me green beans with almonds and actually has started providing greens with almost every meal. We try to eat more than mac and cheese.
i hate to say this (it may throw your whole theory off), but i love fruit and veggies equally. i couldnt go a day without multiple servings of both. and i mean MULTIPLE servings
Fruit all the way! I need that sweet tooth to be satisfied! I should note though, I do enjoy veggies very much…I just tend to eat more fruit on a daily basis.
I like fruits and veggies equally, because they satisfy different cravings…for instance a crunchy roasted veggie with sea salt for the savory side, or a sweet honeycrisp apple for dessert!
Sooooooo not a fruit person. What can I say, I’m just a veggie fiend!
I’ll be honest – I would generally rather eat a piece of fruit than a salad. But I don’t find fruit makes the best accompaniment to all meals, so it’s not like I’d ever give up veggies and just eat fruit. Raspberries, apples, mangoes, nectarines…they all trump carrots, broccoli, spinach, and lettuce. Sorry!
