Getting Cozy with the Neighbors

No, I have not suddenly gotten romantic with the boys next door–but I do feel rather cozy with them of late. Why? I can hear everything they do. These boys are not especially rambunctious, but these fine quality university apartments have walls approximately 1/8 of an inch thick. Even though I have never even met my neighbors, I feel like I know them from the sounds I listen to, day in and day out. I hear them joyously proclaim “TOUCHDOWN!” on weekend afternoons; I hear them unabashedly sing along to their favorite songs, and yes, I even hear them empty their bladders (ick!). This constant soundtrack of another’s existence is not so troublesome, except for the fact that it means that they can likely hear everything we do. I bet they’re not too fond of my midnight smoothie-blending or my never-ending burping contests with Alanna. Oops.

The neighbors can probably hear my audible veggie chomping too–it’s pretty apparent that I do plenty of that…

Wednesday

I used one of my “Instant Breakfast” tips last night, and prepared this morning’s breakfast ahead of time. Somehow I still managed to be late to class. Fortunately, I have a really chill professor for that class–you know, the type that drops the F-bomb as she pleases and likes to chat about the psychological problems of past boyfriends.

After class, I had to do some fund-raising for my sorority. It started to rain of course, so we had to make a mad dash for the student center before all the tickets and T-shirts became soggy little squeegees. When I finally returned to the apartment, with hair all a-frizz and feet a-shivering, I was ready for some grub. I used my salad lady prowess to make a taco salad. It was good but not nearly as good as it would have been with fresh guac:(

I had to go watch War of the Worlds with my English class this evening, so I kept dinner simple with scrambled tofu. I could make this stuff in my sleep, I tell you.

Sorry about the loud neighbors. Just be thankful they don’t have girlfriends. I use to listen to that “music” when I lived in my apartment in San Diego.

  9. Hopefully you won’t hear any other…ahem…more x rated sounds. If you do just cover them with your smoothie blending!

  10. Can I please pick your brains for meal ideas?? I get stuck in a rut all ze time … not good. Thank you for brightening up my monotonous day with ya DELICIOUS eats!! :)

  11. oww college apartments. I had one just like this ;) Love that bunny salad. Such a great blend of flavors. Hope War of the Worlds was good!

  12. oh… that would annoy me a lot because I hate noises at night and in the mornings!!! good to you that your neighbors aren’t complaining about your midnight smoothie making! :)

  13. “No, I have not suddenly gotten romantic with the boys next door–but I do feel rather cozy with them of late.”

Well if you WERE “getting romantic,” then you know that Brian Boitano would be proud ;)

  14. All your food looks delicious! Why is is that they always make college apartments with the thinnest walls? I had the same problem last year!

  15. crushed tortilla chips are probably the best thing to hit salads since sunflower seeds. no joke!

  16. First time commenter!! I love your blog and could not resist letting you know how delighful your tofu scramble looks! Yum Yum. It’s pretty sad when Im sitting at work drooling..lol. Thanks! :)

  17. Better bunny salad is a cute name and sounds like a super delicious combo! I wonder if it’d be good with yogurt instead of mayo?

  18. Short story time – I think you might like this.

I used to have touchdown neighbors too. We lived in a duplex. They started stealing our internet, and one night a paper a history paper came out of my printer. It was from dude next door. My roommate and I thought it would be funny if we posed a “Wanted” sign on our front door – with his name and picture (we were facebook creepers then). For a while, we thought he hated us. But he later told us it was the coolest thing that’s ever happened to him, and that we would be buds for life.

  19. Mmm broccoli. I love it so…
Your taco salad looks bomb! Loves. And ooohhh that better bunny salad on toast is genius!

  20. Oo I really like the sound of that better bunny salad, but for breakfast I might opt for vanilla oikos as the binder. That’s just me and my sweet tooth :-)

  21. You and April have the right idea–the original recipe calls for yogurt instead of vegan mayo, but all I have on hand are the individual containers of yogurt, so I subbed vegan mayo. Here’s a link to the original recipe: http://www.rudisbakery.com/neighborhood

  22. Oh I can totally sympathize with you on the “cozy neighbor” thing. Since I am the resident manager of a patient/family house for the hospital here I basically live with 13 families. Crying babies, screaming toddlers and Sesame street blaring are some of the noises I hear each day. That better bunny salad over toast looks so good. The toast looks crispy too which I am sure provides for lots of crunching sound effects :)

  23. I’ve been gobbling down local peaches like nobody’s business all summer, but I have yet to smoothie-ize any of them. I think I know what’s for dessert this evening. YUMMY!

I wonder if your neighbors think you make a lot of midnight Margaritas… :-)

  24. lol! I can’t believe you can actually hear them…peeing?!! @__o!!

  25. Bunny salad :) Love it!

I remember when I lived in a dorm and the boys’ restroom was right across the hallway from my room. The wonderful sounds of urination and vomiting enthralled me.

  26. I need to try tofu scramble!
