Got Skillz?

Now, I’ve never been graceful. I was always that kid who managed to get her cleats caught in the soccer goal; my hand-eye coordination isn’t much better. Such lack of bodily control extends to the kitchen as well, as evidenced by my multiple kitchen mishaps.

However, knife-related injuries might become a thing of the past as of this semester. As part of one of my final exams, I have to demonstrate basic knife skills by performing the following tasks:

  • peel an apple with a paring knife
  • mince garlic
  • dice an onion
  • section an orange
  • chiffonade spinach
  • julienne potatoes

I’ve watched enough Food Network in my lifetime that I actually know the “proper” way to complete all these tasks…but that doesn’t mean I actually slice and dice that way when I cook. Nonetheless, I consume all these foods on a regular basis, so I’ll be sure to get plenty of practice. Wish me luck!

How are your knife skills? As haphazard as I may be when wielding a knife, I rarely nick myself—although that might be more a function of dull knives than knife skills!

Here’s what I’ve been choppin’ up the kitch today:

Thursdays are busy school days for me, so I prepared breakfast ahead of time last night by making a batch of overnight oat bran. Yet another pudding-like breakfast treat!

I packed up a lunch to eat on campus featuring my beloved tempeh bacon.

For dinner, I whipped up two B-Hut recipes: a mock tuna salad wrap and acorn squash soup. Can you tell I want it to be fall?

Off to get geared up for a long holiday weekend:) G’night!

  1. My knife skills are terrible. You should post some tips on the blog ;)

  2. I dunno why you’re so intrigued by the mini jars, but I share your strange infatuation! Why do we like little things so much? It’s a mystery :) .

    Happy holiday weekend, Caroline!

  3. I’ve never had overnight oatbran but if overnight oats are pudding like I can only imagine how much *more* pudding like oat bran would be! Sounds delicious :)

Have fun over the long holiday!

  4. What’s that, Caroline? You’ve found a new Lovely [Lunching] Lady friend? ;] Hee hee.

I think my knife skills are adequate. I don’t know if I cut things the “right” way necessarily, but I get the job done quickly and efficiently with no mishaps so…:P Don’t fix what’s not broken, I suppose.

But you know what? I have never heard the term “chiffonade spinach.” o_o That is one for me to look up.

Hope you have a lovely long weekend. <3

  5. despite being in foods classes during undergrad, i don’t think my knife skills are all that great. so fantastic that you already know the skills required, though! :-)

i’ve been craving overnight oats during these super hot mornings, too!

  6. Beautiful pictures of your lunch meal, makes it that much funner to eat!
I love that fall recipes are starting to appear on lots of blogs!

  7. Coming from a girl who nearly chipped her tooth on tyring to cut a frozen strawberry with my teeth, you cna only imagine my knife skills arent up to scratch, ha, but, ouch, it really hurt ;D

  8. I have very bad knife skill, i cut myself many times! :(

  9. I think my knife skills are pretty good. I recently took a knife skills class and didn’t cut myself. I still couldn’t understand why I needed to perfectly dice a potato or torne a potato (football shape). Atleast I learned something new. Enjoy your long weekend. :)

  10. oh my god i’m the WORST with knifeing it! i can’t even begin to describe how terrible i am at it. i feel like you should do video how-tos when you learn all of it!

  11. KNIFE SKILLS!! Did you know I created a video on basic knife skills? I didn’t have enough time to do paring but you can watch my video ( the part that actually shows the techniques) if you want!

:) It was nice to see you in that class, I thought it was you but wasn’t 100% ! Thanks for your comments- hope all is well!

Don’t you just love Dr. Fisher!?

  12. WHERE did you get that jar???? Must have-must own! I love little tiny things. :)

I was actually terrified of knives up until a few years ago. However I’ve worked myself up from a paring knife to a chef’s knife. I yield it like a clumsy sumo warrior.

    Happy Friday,

    Emily (aka Curly Top)

  13. I love miniature things, too– They’re just so cute :) I’m def. in with you on that one!

Your eats look good today, as usual…

Give my blog a lookie– http://namastegurl.blogspot.com/

I’m always lookin’ at yours, so it’d be nice to get a comment from you…it’s still in it’s infancy stages

  14. My knife skills aren’t bad.. sounds like a sweet class! Check out my new bloggy, I added you to my roll :) Have a great weekend!

  15. I can’t wait for fall either! I have to try your acorn squash soup.

  16. my knife skills are…decent, i suppose. until i get flustered and rushed and end up nearly chopping off my thumb.

i’ve been meaning to try overnight oat bran for a long time because i love overnight oatmeal, but i never think about doing it the night before anymore! i’m also tempted to put actual pudding mix in with it and let it set overnight…ever tried it? i’m sure it’d be super num!

  17. i am SO with you on all things mini! LOVE.

  18. okay i’ll be the first to admit it, i think ur mock tuna salad looks better than the real tuna salad wrap i have. NICE JOB LOVE <3
