Halloween Conundrums

As Halloween draws near, I find myself facing a few conundrums.

First, the obvious one—the costume. In the wake of a particularly grueling couple of weeks at school, my creativity is approximately zero. Here’s a look at my costumes of the past:

Now I not only have to figure out a costume for myself but also for this little booger.

I want to enter her in the pet costume contest on Saturday :)

The other incredibly important life decision I am pondering is what to pass out to trick-or-treaters. I live in an apartment building, but there are several families, and I would hate to be empty-handed. Something tells me kids wouldn’t be too pleased with anything in my pantry at the moment—last time I checked, canned beans aren’t wildly popular among the under-10 crowd.

So I’m looking to you all for inspiration—what have been your favorite Halloween costumes (canine or otherwise)? What kind of candy are you passing out this year?

Despite my Halloween indecision, I did manage to make some pretty sweet meal choices.

Before heading to my last day of my foodservice rotation (yay!), I downed a big bowl of cereal. I know I don’t really need any more fiber in my diet, but I just really like the taste of Fiber One.

For lunch, I packed a batch of Lemon Ginger Hummus.

I’m pretty pooped this evening, so I kept dinner simple and made a taco salad. Check out the impressive stats on these refried beans—moderate sodium, no fat, and lots of fiber!

OK, I am off to relax with Seth and Margot. Good night!

  1. I was a bumblebee in 2008, too!

  2. Your taco salad looks so good! I also love how the banana slices are perfectly arranged on your cereal. We eat with our eyes first, right?

  3. Definetly was a ladybug last year! Haha :)

  4. i like to pass out non food things to the kids…this year i got halloween shaped erasers! also….re fried beans are the best :D

  5. Such colourful, pretty pretty food!

You can get some doggy costume inspiration from Gala Darling! http://galadarling.com/article/if-you-need-a-smile-today-these-dog-halloween-costumes-should-do-the-trick

  6. The stats on those re-fried beans are awesome! I usually avoid canned beans because of the sodium/fat content, but those look outstanding. I’ll have to keep an eye out!
This year I’m passing out little bags of goldfish and pretzels that I picked up from Target. I figured, they’re less sugary than candy, but still enjoyable for kids. (:

  7. All your past costumes are so cute! I’m going to be a ballerina on my Halloween 5K (we have to dress-up), but I haven’t figured out a work-appropriate Halloween costume.

I saw these cute costumes for dogs to dress up as tortoises and dinosaurs. I found them amusing!

  8. Ooh I like refried beans, I’ll have to keep an eye out for a non-sketchy version like that.

You could be a head of broccoli? :) Uhh I’m not so great at Halloween costume ideas either apparently…

  9. I love that you choose cute/clever costumes instead of the “sexy” ones most gals gravitate towards. I’m with you on that. I’ve been Dorothy from “Wizard of Oz” and Alice (of Wonderland) sooooo many times. It’s my lazy fall back.

  10. What?? You’ve never gone as a stalk of broccoli?

  11. Delicious! That’s my kind of meal! I am crazy about beans. I just made a vegan chocolate chip cookie pie, and there were two cans of beans in it. It sounds weird but it was divine. And, since it appears you love fiber, a great source of that. Anyway, thanks for another great post!
