Healing Berries
Currently I type to you in this position:
Yep. I’ve got a cranky IT band. I plan on running a 10K on Valentine’s Day in a few weeks, so I need to get my legs back to tip-top condition before then…hence the melting strawberries perched atop my knee. My smoothie habit makes for quite an extensive selection of “ice packs,” that is, bags o’ berries. To those of you with minor knee injury experience: how did you recover? Any and all advice is appreciated!
Aside from using it for its numbing properties, I have also been actually eating some food too.
Tuesday
Peanut butter and tofu: two of my all-time favorite foods, combined in one glorious dish of tummy-lovin’.
Wednesday
More peanut butter was on the menu for breakfast. When you’re in a hurry, PB&J is where it’s at.
Remember my Goddess Hummus recipe? Well today I improved on its genius by making Green Goddess Hummus. The secret to this magical stuff’s vibrant hue? Just a handful of spinach, of course. You better believe I licked the bowl clean;)
Now I should probably switch out my bag o’ berries before it melts all over my leg. Ciao, lovelies!

Take it easy and get well soon my sweet!
Oh no…I hope your knee heals quickly!
On a selfish note, I tried Spirutien for the first time today. OMG!!! Is there somewhere to get it hella cheap. I’m obsessed!
I had an IT band issue several years ago. The only that helped was lots of naproxen and lots of rest. As in, I didn’t get to do any running for about 3 weeks. Hopefully yours heals much faster!
hey, i read your blog regularly but haven’t commented before. i’m a med student and runner and i have had my share of knee/hip injuries.
the best thing i’ve found (and most of the doctors i know recommend) is cold and hot alternating (i would do about 20 mins of each at a time) and taking 800mg ibuprofen (or another nsaid) with food three times a day for a couple of weeks. doing this is important because only taking a small dose or taking it sporadically just causes pain relief, taking a high dose regularly for a couple of weeks will reduce the inflammation and help the injury heal. just remember to eat it with food and you shouldn’t have any stomach issues.
also, try to take some time off running and crosstrain. i was on the elliptical only for two weeks and i nearly died (i don’t know why i think the elliptical is so much more boring than a treadmill, but i do), but it really helped.
hope that helps!
love your polkadotty plate! sorry about your knee, i hope you feel better soon! i had some major knee issues (blew it out in gymnastics, fun) but ihave no advice for you other than ice and rest! hope you enjoy some of those strawberries, don’t let your knee hog em!
Peanut butter was most definitely meant to be with anything, tofu included
Hope your leg feels better soon! rest and stretching usually gets things back together
I’m sorry about your knee!
That’s def. a fear of mine
I haven’t had pineapple in forever! Time to make a re-appearance back into my life…
sorry about the IT woes! good thing youve got those berries!
ah! i hope your knee feels better quickly my dear!
yum
and I LOVE how vibrant your hummus is
Hope your knee feels better asap. To recover from my knee injury I…
1. rested A LOT
2. did physical therapy
3. lived in one of those big ice tubs for a while
Great eats! I love the PBJ photos!
Poor you sweetie! That pic totally reminds me of the song “Bruises”- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8HRCacAQ-4
you know “Frozen strawberries…so I can ice my bruisy knees…pink and black and blue…” I love it:)
Nom, nom, peanut, tofu noodles.
xxxxxxx
When I had a knee injury, the only thing that helped was rest
It really sucked!
I hope yours is feeling better!
ohh no, sorry abot your knee!!! I hope it gets better for your race. I would suggest RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) as much as possible esop the REST! just stay off of it for a week or so. I hope it heels fast!
peanut butter noodles?!?!?! gasm
Sending your IT some get better soon vibes!
Love the look of that hummus – reminds me of spring (which BTW seems so far away)…
Haha I’ve totally done that with all manner of frozen goods. And once (during freshman year, obvi) with a bottle of frozen rum. Good times.
Yikes good work resting it girl, I’m sure you’ll be good to go in time for your 10k!
Oh no! My best advice would be to not strain it (by pushing yourself through a run – could do some serious damage!) and rest/ice as much as you can!
Green hummus… that may be the star of my St. Patty’s day party! hah =) Looks delicious!
I hope you feel better soon!! I heart ice, it heals all wounds (well, almost.)
When I was training and had tendonitis in my ankles I put them in an ice bath right after my run, took an advil, then wrapped them while I wasn’t running.
