Hi, My Name Is Enilorac

What? You mean you’ve never figured out what your name spells backwards? Ever since we discovered my sister’s talent for backward spelling, my family has been infatuated with this new “language.” It’s quite amazing, actually–give my sister virtually any word, and she’ll spit it out backwards within seconds. As a result of her ability to retro-spell, we now ask people to pass the “klim” at the dinner table and take evening trips to “Tram Law,” or maybe even “Skcubrats,” if we’re lucky. It’s quite convenient in embarrassing situations too, as in, “Mom, did you just traf??” Sometimes I forget that these terms are not part of the vernacular and use them with people outside of my family, in which case I get some pretty strange looks. Oops.

Are there any idiosyncratic words or phrases in your vocabulary?

Onto the “doof”:

I finished up the last of my frozen cherries…darn, I guess I’ll just have to get some fresh ones soon:)

It was ridiculously chilly on my run this morning, so I returned home craving yet another bowl of oats. In contrast to some of the other letters in the Alphabet Oats challenge, there are plenty of “P” food words. I included quite a few in this bowl, but I could have just as easily made one out of pears, pineapple, pistachios, and maybe a few prunes. I headed outside for my morning meal today. Not only is the sunshine great for getting your vitamin D, but it also makes for excellent food pictures:)

Remember that lentil dip I love so much? Well, I have the hardest time finding it here in Birmingham. I went to the only place in town that sells it, only to discover that they had none. Although I am rather distraught, I decided to try my hand at making my own lentil dip for lunch today. My version included lentils, garlic, mushrooms, red onions, lemon juice, salt, pepper, & paprika. It was alright, but just not the same as the original. At least that salad made up for my lack-luster pita.

At the suggestion of my friend Jess, I picked up some of Lightlife‘s Tempeh-tations yesterday at Whole Foods. To be honest, I am not tempted by this tempeh. I chose the lemon variety (mostly because it was the lowest in sodium) and found it rather tart. Anyone tried any of the other flavors? Food blogger confession: when I plated the tempeh on the couscous, it struck me as distastefully beige…so I added the paprika and parsley, purely for aesthetic reasons:)

I made a happy discovery today: apparently my computer has video recording capabilities…which got me thinking. Would you all be interested in a video post? What kind of video would you enjoy most? I thought it might be a fun way to spend the afternoon one day!

Alright, now I am off to watch Dancing with the Stars!

  1. I only ever tried 3 grain tempeh. I marinated it in italian dressing, grilled it, and made a sandwich. It was really good!

I read somewhere that if you steam tempeh first for about 10 minutes it takes away some of the bitterness. Maybe you’ll like it better that way!

  2. Hmm I definitely wouldn’t have gone for the lemon-y flavor, it’s just not something I’d pair with tempeh?? The ginger flavor was really goood though!

Loving your hemp shake and family slang!

  3. Bring on the ideo-vays! Chris and I do the pig Latin thing a lot to hide things from the girls. It’s easier than spelling cuz we is stoopid.

  4. such a fun language your family have! your sister is so talented!!! I need few moments before figuring out how to spell a word backwards!
video post?? yeah~~~ I’d like to see how you make that amazing P oats! :D

  5. One of my friends has a similar knack for backwards spelling… it takes her all of 2 seconds to figure a word out, whereas I would have to get a pen and write it down letter by letter, hah.

  6. Caroline,

Hey darlin! Great post today. I love, Love, LOVE the idea of a BHut video. Videos are just too much fun. :D

  7. I tried the teriyaki ginger tempehtations, and they were pretty good. I actually just picked up the lemon flavor, and have yet to try them.

Your family language is too cute :) And I love how you arranged those peaches on your oats. So pretty!

  8. Beautiful “P” oats!

  9. do a video post!! how fun :)

  10. Actually, we don’t spell things either–we just say it backwards. Spelling it out letter by letter would take far too long!

  11. Looking forward to a video post!!

  12. that backwards talk stuff is incredible. i have a friend who can also do that. he gets pretty sick of people asking him to repeat sentences. but it is a really cool talent!

  14. That is so bizarre – and cool – that your sister can pronounce words backwards with barely any thought! I love that your family has a special language :)

I’ve been enjoying frozen cherries, but look forward to fresh ones as well… fresh cherries just scream summer!

I’ve also been known to add something to a plate of food for pure aesthetic purposes. I’d love to see a video post!

  19. I used to do that all the time with my best friend growing up. Mine was always the funniest because Sarah backwards is Haras (like harass) so we always cracked up at that ;-)
