"I Hate Goodbyes!"

In the words of the sage Lloyd Christmas, “I hate goodbyes!” I invoke the wisdom of Dumb and Dumber tonight because I just finished bidding farewell to my sister Lea and her husband Ryan. They’ll be heading down to the lake tomorrow, so tonight was my last chance to see them before I head off to school. Although I am a senior (!) this year, and I should be accustomed to this routine by now, I’m always a little bummed by the prospect of not seeing my family for prolonged periods of time. How about you? How do you handle saying goodbye?

Once again, much of my day was occupied by packing (with a small shopping break!). All I have to say is that I have accumulated an absurd amount of shoes–I suppose it’s because they make my ugly feet slightly more attractive:)

Today’s chow:

Wednesday

I have been neglecting dark chocolate chunks for far too long. I predict that the rest of the bag will be gone by tomorrow…

Thursday

Yet another comfort meal this morning–banana-blueberry oats with almond butter. Perfect.

After some serious packing (read: scurrying up and down two flights of stairs for several hours), I had worked up quite an appetite. I made a big Greek salad using my newest grocery find–frozen artichokes. I have been searching for these forever, due to my distaste for the salty canned variety as well as the labor-intensive fresh ones. The verdict? Perfect compromise! PS Have you ever tried Friendship cottage cheese? I quite enjoyed its creaminess and pleasant lack of wateriness.

There was a raging thunderstorm outside at dinnertime this evening, with lights flickering (as in my gadget video). Rather than begin a labor-intensive, electricity-dependent recipe, I settled for a simple veggie soup made with leftovers. Yum.

vegetable soup (tomatoes, green beans, red beans, & mushrooms); oat bran pita; salad with lemongrass vinaigrette; fruit salad

I’ve got just a few more non-essentials to pack (e.g., DVDs), so I’ll sign off for now. Good night!signature

  1. Hang in there, my dear!! Just remember that this isn’t a permanent good-bye :-)

  2. I hate goodbyes too! I’m almost as bad at them as I am at awkward confrontations, and I try to avoid or at least put off both for as long as I can!

I don’t really like the saltiness of the canned artichoke hearts either. But I haven’t seen any frozen ones. I’ll have to look more closely for them the next time I go grocery shopping!

  3. Have you tried Friendship whipped cottage cheese?? That’s definitely my favorite.

My goodbyes stunk too :( I came today..I should have waited a couple more days.

  4. I’m with you and totally hate goodbyes. I get this really sad feeling inside, even though I know I’m going to see that person soon. This is probably why I chose to go to a college in-state. Although it is sad to say goodbye to the family (temporarily!), you have all your friends at college to look forward to :)

I have frozen artichokes in my freezer but have been neglecting them for canned. I really need to remember to defrost them!

  5. hi! Just discovered your blog, I’m now a follower!
You have such yummy eats and wonderful recipes ideas, I’ll be sure to try some them :)

    Great salad combo ^^

    Looking foward to read more,
    xxx

  6. I’m with you on hating goodbyes. I lucked out in not really having to deal it too much, since I commute to college. But my freshman year was somewhere else, so I can totally relate. Ick…hate it!

I dealt with it by journaling…a lot…and convinced myself that in a couple weeks I’d be totally back to normal with friends. :D And, really, the holiday vacations will be here before you know it!

  7. I always think of it as a “see you later”! And I always know we’ll keep in touch. It’s tough but I can’t hold on forever. Hang in there hun!

  8. thank you for the lloyd christmas reference. that just made my day :)

  9. Goodbyes aren’t fun but the way I see it, you’ll see them again, they aren’t gone forever and I can still talk to them on the phone/email/facebook. That’s what helps me get through it!

  10. I hate goodbyes! When I said goodbye to my boyfriend a week ago lets just say it was full of tears!

On a brighter note you had some yummy eats! I’ve been dying to try Friendship cottage cheese but they don’t sell it here!

  11. I am not great with goodbyes… I move a lot so it happens a lot and is never fun. I am just thankful for phones, emails, facebook, etc to keep in touch!

Did you ever manage to get that smoothie book?

  12. Mm I love cottage cheese on salads, & that shake looks amazing!

Good-byes are strange. It was so hard leaving my boyfriend when I went away to college for a year. But then there are always holidays to look forward to :) Christmas & Thanksgiving…

  13. Oh wow girlio – all your eats look super duper awesome today!! Your comfort oats = amazingly creamy looking. That Greek salad looks rockin – especially with the garbanzos and the soup looks out of this world. Seems like everyone’s craving the comfort foods right now!
I have to deal with the goodbyes a lot! I hate saying goodbye to my family (who live on the other side of the world) but once I get back to routine I’m normally ok – you kind of have to be when you make the choice to live in a different country! Still I get super sad when I spend time with them and then they leave. Sigh. Feel for you!!

  14. First of all, congrats on being a senior!!! Enjoy your last year, lady.

Also, I’m in love with all of your eats. From that breakfast shake to the Greek salad… my kind of day!

I’m not good at saying goodbyes, either.

  15. “Goodbye my LOVE!!” –> also from Dumb & Dumber. Genius movie.

Well, at least this is the last time you’ll say goodbye to return to school for the year. Big changes await you, so eventually you’ll be too wrapped up in everything that involves to think of the distance, I’m willing to bet! Just keep your eyes focused on the next-soonest thing you have to look forward to. :D

Frozen artichokes are absolutely the way to go! I first found them at Trader Joe’s and really have not bought any other kind since. I was all proud of myself when I steamed a few and ate the meat right off the leaves and all, but yeah I’m not a fan of eating being labor-intensive or detritus-producing. You have found the solution! Plus they thaw pretty quickly and roast up GORGEOUSLY under the broiler. :)

  16. I’m one of those people that just tries not to make a big deal of goodbyes because I hate them so much! Just remember you’ll be back soon :)

    Good luck with the packing!

  17. I will also be saying my goodbyes very soon- but I’m sure once you’re into the swing of things, it won’t be so bad.

I am a huuuuge fan of chocolate for breakfast. Nothin’ better.

  18. haha, i love that you quoted D&D, something i do on a daily basis. goodbyes suck, end of story. garbanzos and cottage cheese is the BEST COMBO EVER! never tried friendship brand, nor have i seen it. darn it. hey don’t forget to email me your doggies!!
