Ick.
As of yesterday morning, I am in the midst of my annual visit from the flu fairy. Said fairy’s timing couldn’t be much worse, as it seems I am being attacked on all sides these days—school, work, and fitness life are all a little chaotic at the moment.
At least I still have a thoughtful boyfriend who bolts to the store at 10PM to buy me cough drops:)
Speaking of cough drops, what’s you favorite kind? As a kid I always loved those Luden’s cherry flavored drops—they tasted just like cherry lifesavers to me! Now I groove on the Halls Defense Vitamin C drops. Tasty citrus!
As you might expect, I’ve been loading up on comfort food today to make myself feel better.
So I finally got up the guts to make savory oats again. For some crazy reason, I’m always convinced that people will judge me for eating oats minus to usual sweet toppings. As if I don’t eat enough other strange concoctions! Anyway, today’s bowl featured spinach, BBQ, and soy sausage.
Once lunchtime rolled around, I opted for a simple bean salad spiked with raspberry vinaigrette and walnuts.
The evening meal featured another Ellie recipe, Curried Butternut Squash Soup.
My tweak:
-I used agave nectar instead of honey, simply because it’s what I had on hand.
This soup was a nice blend of sweet-smoky-spicy, although next time I might add a few of my own flavorings, such as ginger or maybe a dash of cinnamon. On the side, I had a Clean Eating-inspired grilled cheese with apple & grainy mustard.

Alright, I am off to pound out some PowerPoint slides. G’night!

im loving the savory oats- i’ve been eating them more than sweet oats the past few months and i love it!
I have a flu/influenza mixture
Suave Slav and my parents have been taking care of me, haha. Hope you feel 100% better soon!
Oh no! The flu is absolutely no fun. I hope you start feeling better soon.
I also don’t do savory oats nearly enough. I love mine topped with a veggie burger, dijon mustard and parsley.
feel better girl
i think LOTS of soup and tv marathons are the solution to being sick!
Ick is right! Being sick is no fun.
But kudos to Seth for stepping up to the plate and taking care of you! I loved those Luden drops as well growing up – it’s been ages since I’ve had them!
I’ve only tried savory oats once before, too. Perhaps I will have to try them again – they do deserve another chance.
Feel better soon!
Ludens were/are the BEST!!! I used to beg my dad to buy them (often fake coughing) and gobble ‘em up like candy!! I hope you feel better, Caroline! Good thing you’ve got Seth there.
I’m sorry you’re under the weather, friend- no fun indeed! Especially when you’ve had it tough recently….
Hang in there! Watch some Ellie shows, I’m sure that’ll cheer you up!

I hope you feel better!!!! I used to love Halls Fruit Breezers
Ick, indeed. The flu ripped through our house a few weeks ago and two months ago (thanks a lot daycare!) and it’s miserable. Rest up and feel better!
From the title of this post I was expected to see a recipe that didn’t turn out. I’m delighted that you liked the butternut squash soup, it’s one of my favourites!
You poor thing! Get better soon! That was sweet of your boyfriend to go get cough drops
I like the fruit breeze ones.
That soup looks fantastic!
Hope you feel better.
I am seeing so many squash soup recipes lately and i am surprised i have never tried it. I must try it soon since people seem to be loving it.
Man this flu bug is really going around. I sure hope it skips past my family:( Feel better!
Oh my goodness….I thought I was the only one who ate my oats this way! I like the name ‘savory oats’…it elevates the image a bit. I enjoy any kind of oat (bran, oat mixes with flax/triticale etc.) with crumbled veggie sausage and a natural ketchup or spicey bbq sauce. I tend to rise & eat this concoction before my hubby gets up for breakfast, because he always teases me for it (as did my family growing up), but you know what? I am going to enjoy my savory oats whenever and wherever, from now on! I feel so validated, hehe. Delish blog, Caroline!
