In Season: Pomegranates
As a new feature here at The Broccoli Hut, I will be posting about various in-season fruits and vegetables, providing information about their nutritional benefits as well as their culinary possibilities. For today’s edition, I’ll be discussing one of nature’s most heavenly jewels: the pomegranate.
Nutritional Highlights
High in fiber
Good source of vitamin C
Good source of potassium
Contain polyphenols (tannins, ellagic acid, and anthocyanins)—all beneficial to cardiovascular health and cancer prevention
Preparation
As indicated by this post when I first attempted to crack open a pomegranate, the process of extracting the arils can be a little tricky. Watch this helpful video for a few tips before you hack into your first pomegranate.
Serving Suggestions
As a topping for waffles or French toast
As a oatmeal mix-in (either juice or arils)
As a glaze for tofu
As a salad component
As a yogurt mix-in
As a fruit salad component (shown here with another seasonal fruit, the clementine)
What are some of your favorite ways to enjoy pomegranates?

Hello and welcome! I have created this blog for people who love food, especially healthful, vegetarian food.
I have just graduated from Duke University with degrees in English and psychology. I plan to pursue a master's degree in nutrition starting in Fall 2010. Ideally, I would like to combine my love of food and the written word someday as a health writer.

Great new blog feature!
I love pomegranate truffles
I love pomegranate arils with yogurt!
mmm i LURVE pom arils. you covered my top three uses – yogurt, pancakes, salad. they’re messy to cut but soooo worth the trouble!
I love pomegranate, my favorite way of eating them is just popping the seeds by handfuls in my mouth, sooo good!
With the juice I like to make Pommegranate Sangria (with some mint leaves), deeelicious!
