It’s Raining Pollen

Source

It’s that time of year again. Yep, that sneeze-inducing, fluorescent powder has begun to cover every surface and creep into every crevice. Sidewalks, cars, my sunglasses—even the soap dispenser in the girls’ bathroom—have taken on a new golden hue thanks to the arrival of springtime pollen. I am fortunate enough to be completely free of allergies, so this annual inundation of golden dust is nothing more than a minor nuisance to me. My allergy-ridden friends, however, surely feel differently about this recent pollen tidal wave. For their sake, I hope the pollen levels diminish ASAP.

Do you suffer from spring-time allergies? Is there currently a “pollen tidal wave” in your area?

All this pollen crud has not deterred me from making some good eats. Take a look:

BioChem, you make my heart sing. This vegan protein is—dare I say it?—as good if not better than my beloved Spirutein. Anyone who has frequented the Broccoli Hut or perused my protein powder guide knows the power of that statement; Spirutein occupies a special place in my foodie heart. However, this new kid on the block is pretty rockin’. I might have to invest in an entire canister of this glorious substance.

As per usual, I whipped up a big batch of homemade hummus for lunch. Seriously, this orange and green trend is creepily consistent.

Once my full day of classes had come to a close and my Google reader had been cleared of new posts, I settled down to make a dinner of dynamic duos: black beans & salsa, sweet potato & sunflower butter, and mango & peach. As Julie would say, “amaze-a-balls.”

Before I go, I thought I’d share with you the song that has been stuck in my head all day and thus the inspiration for today’s blog post title:

Yeah, that’s totally on my list of 25 most played songs. G’night.

  1. Whoa- I’ve never seen pollen all over everything like that…or maybe I’m just not observant. Fortunately, I don’t suffer from any allergies!

I didn’t know BioChem made vegan protein powder! I’ll be on the look-out :)

  2. Great eats :D I love smoothies!

  3. lets be honest … the real song stuck in your head at the moment… and as a result the song that is now stuck in my head at the moment is the six flags theme song. true story. ha =)

  4. I’ve definitely never seen that much pollen!

  5. Smoothie. Hummus. Black Beans. Sweet Potato.

  6. Oh yes…pollen..I remember the days back in VA! But sadly enough, I started getting allergies AFTER I left VA. Weird!

  7. The pollen deluge has hit the District as well. Like you, i’m fortunate enough to not be allergic but it’s gross.

Hah I just can’t get over the fact that it’s called biochem. I’m sure it’s super clean/natural/healthy if it’s got the Caroline stamp of approval, but the name suggests anything but.

  8. dang. that pollen is not messing around.

  9. What what what? Biochem? I must try! So I sucked it up and ordered pea and rice protein that is less sugary and more proteiny than Spirtuein, so now I eat Spirutein for desserts and the others in my oats and other meals during the day. I look forward to the Spirutein all day long!!!

  10. I’m glad that I don’t have allergies but suddenly everyone around me seem to have… I feel compassion to them!

  11. i am also in the non-allergic category — i think we’re the minority! the green stuff really is out of hand this year — i think it’s the string of sunny days we’ve had with no rain to stop it.

  12. Living in Austin I get my share of pollen as well, the past weekend we took a trip to LA when I came back from not moving my car for 4 days it was covered in a thick coat!

I have never heard of the Bio-Chem vegan protein before will have to check that out!

  13. I have never seen pollen like that!!!! Only on flowers! So no, nothing like that here…send your friends with allergies here!

  14. My goodness, that is some pollen! I used to get really bad allergies when I was younger but I got treatment via allergy shots and pills and now I’ve built up enough resistance that I don’t have to take anything and have no symptoms :)

Love your smoothies! I need to invest in some good protein powder myself.

  15. Amaze balls is a good one. I’ll add it to my list of vernacular to try…

  16. I am so done with the pollen. Seriously. I have allergies, but they’re not too bad. Nothing a little nasal spray can’t fix :) The color of your smootie is beautiful!

  17. I cannot believe the amount of pollen you guys have! I’ve never seen anything like it before. WOW!

  18. That pollen is CRAZY – you pore soul! Awesome food as always!

  19. I had no idea that pollen could be that prolific- mental note to myself to not visit your parts in springtime, I’d probably end up in hospital with an occluded windpipe! The vegan Biochem sounds great, especially since Spirutein, much to my dismay, isn’t truly vegan due to the addition of bee pollen- I mean WHY?! ;(

  20. haha spiruteeeeeeein! i never see it anymore!!! But I WILL always think of you when i think of spirutein! le duh!!!

i dont have allergies either! thank goodness! my last skating partner did and it was BADDDDDD. But it is all over my cahhhh.

  21. Yeah, that pollen is all over our cars. Death by pollen!
