Kitchen Mishap No. 861

Based on the frequency with which I blog about my kitchen accidents, you all probably think I am incredibly spastic. Well, you would be correct in that assumption.

The other day I had yet another kitchen mishap, although this one did not involve the oven or a vegetable peeler. Rather, this time I created a little excitement for myself with the microwave and a jar of Sunbutter.

The belly grumbles arrived right on time, around 9 PM, so I headed to kitchen to prepare myself a little snackski; off to the nut butter stash I went. I was down to the last morsel of Sunbutter, but that last spoonful of joy was sticking to the bottom of the jar. In an effort to loosen things up a bit, I decided to nuke the whole jar for just a few seconds. After pressing “COOK,” fireworks ensued. As it turns out, there was a tiny piece of the foil seal still lingering on the jar, causing quite a light show in the kitchen. Fortunately, no damage was incurred to me or my kitchen—not even a stray scorch mark. I guess that will teach me to be more careful with my future microwaving endeavors.

Do you have any microwave horror stories? Please tell me I’m not the only one who has had a microwave malfunction.

Thursday

Since my last post, I had the opportunity to dine at Angus Barn with dining committee. ‘Twas quite the elegant affair, as you’ll soon see. Let’s being the multi-course meal:

For appetizers, they had a special vegan option, white bean bruschetta.

The soup course was also vegan, a roasted eggplant and tomato soup. I wasn’t really impressed—I would have preferred whole vegetables rather than a puree.

Onwards to the salad! This dish made me think I need to re-stock pecans…

As for the main course, the other diners enjoyed a surf ‘n turf meal with aged beef and seared tuna. They placed this plate before me at meal-time:

Rather meat-like, no? Looks can be deceiving, my friends. The waiter informed me that this masterpiece is a butternut squash and mushroom roast. I’m convinced that there was also some wheat gluten in the mix, as this roast had a distinct chewiness.

Dessert was a delightful trio of crème brulee, blackberry cobbler, and chocolate mousse pie. I took a bite of each…then sunk my spoon in for several more bites of the cobbler. I ate all the berries, of course.

Friday

I crammed in some last-minute studying this morning while enjoying a pumpkin protein shake. Yummage.

I got creative at lunch today with some grilled goodies. I marinated some tofu in PB-BBQ sauce before throwing it on the grill. While I had the GF out, I also grilled some sweet potato spears and zucchini.

For din-din, I hung out with Allie while making up a batch of black bean chili. Good company + good food = bliss.

Off to rock the weekend. Later, lovelies!

  1. I’ve also experienced sparks in my microwave >>; Disturbing, isn’t it? ;)

  2. Thanks for letting me crash your Friday evening and talk your BF’s ear off.

Isn’t Sunbutter a plastic jar!? BROC!!!!!

  3. I too prefer a chunky soup to a puree any day.
I’m curious (and feel free to not answer this publicly) where you go to school? I, too, am a college student in NC studying English. And I also happen to be a new vegan surrounded by hordes of meat eaters, so if you happen to be close I would love an animal-free dining partner.

  4. I’ve done the exact same thing with a pb jar! You’re not alone! That meal out looks incredible- really impressive veggie options..that roast? Yummers.
    Enjoy the weekend. xxxx

  5. oh… i”ve had so many microwave mishap…. plastic deformation happens all the time! ;)

  6. I always wondered what happened when you put metal in the microwave. I just know you’re never supposed to do it. Sounds scary!

    Have a great weekend :)

  7. I think the worst was microwaving eggs, and poking the yolks when they came out only to have them explode

  8. Ack, I have had sparks in my microwave. Usually when I am half asleep and stick a metal measuring spoon in there to warm my peanut butter. Oops.

I totally thought that was meat in the roast!

  9. That reminds me of when I tried to melt chocolate into a chocolate coin wrapper thing when I was like 11 ;)

  10. What a weird coincidence!
Just a few minutes ago my wife and I were heating up broccoli in the microwave and had the tiny bits of green light up like nobody’s business! Sparks everywhere.

Now there was no metal in the bits and the plate we have used 100 times. The broccoli was diced into small pieces and frozen and we were reheating them.

Have you ever hear of this strangeness? I have seen it in other posts on the web…we Googled it right away. But everyone seems to kept pointing to metal in the oven. And that’s definitely not it!

    Ahhhhhhhh! :)

  11. I might also point out that our daughter shares your name…seems the culinary fates are having some fun with us.

  12. Ummm… I’ve actually ruined two microwaves… so far: in one, I tried to melt butter still wrapped in its foil- serious fireworks; the second one met its end whilst defrosting a bagel topped with seeds. Seeds= mini dynamite bombs in microwave. Needless to say, my parents were not happy with me. Or the chargrilled smell in their kitchen that lingered for weeks. I hope your weekend isn’t too crammed full of work! P.S.- is it PC to use ‘spastic’ in the U.S? Only its a very taboo, highly offensive term to use in Britain nowadays, and am curious as to whether this has filtered across from America or has its origins here?!

  13. Wow – magnificent eats, Caroline!
And, about the microwave fail – it happend to me a few times. And it´s always with sweet potatoes! I guess the oven is my only option, really… Haha!
    Have a great Sunday, girl!
    Brazilian XOXO´s,
    Gabriela

  14. I’ve definitely done that before with the pb! In fact, I’ve had my fair share of microwave accidents. I won’t bring up the great oatmeal incident of ’09

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
