Life as a Lefty

Right now, I would love nothing more than to be ambidextrous. You see, yesterday’s showdown with the Spiralizer left me slightly handicapped. I still have full use of my hand, but the wound is tender and prone to spontaneous bleeding (I know, gross—sorry), so I’ve been trying to limit the use of my right hand. The past 24 hours have been host to a collection coordination challenges; everything from cooking to putting my pants on has been an awkward adventure.

Fortunately, this little injury seems to be healing nicely, so my days as a lefty are numbered.

Have you ever had to temporarily switch from life as a righty to a lefty (or vice versa)? Anyone out there ambidextrous?

Despite the aforementioned obstacles, I did manage to put together some tasty meals…

I’m plenty excited for fall and all its lovely apples…but I must admit that I’m a little sad to see peach season end. This one I had with breakfast was pretty darn near perfect.

For lunch, I packed a big salad featuring a slightly out-of-the-ordinary combination—apples, butternut squash, and white beans.

One of my fellow students came to class today toting a ginormous bag of Asian pears. Her dad grows them, so she was looking for a few people to take the bounty off her hands. I happily obliged:)

For dinner, I prepared a modified version of one of my favorite Clean Eating recipes, Curried Egg White Salad. Lesson of the day: I’m kind of terrible at making hard-boiled eggs. Suggestions on how to improve my technique would be welcome. I still managed to extract enough from the eggs to make a tasty sandwich.

Alright, I am off to finish a rockin’ evening by watching Oklahoma alone on the couch. I know, I know—I am one wild and crazy chick. Yee-haw!

  1. ambidextrous, over here! :)

  2. I’m sorry about your hand…:/

As for the hard boiling of eggs, I don’t really do it too much myself. I don’t know what your opinion on Lisa Lillien is, but I did notice that she tackled the question of “the best way to make hard-boiled egg whites” the other day, so here’s the link if you are interested:

  3. I too have serious issues with hard boiled eggs…as in I suck at making them. Which doesn’t really make any sense since you just boil them, but any recommendations would be beneficial to me as well:)

  4. Here’s how I boil eggs:

    1. Put eggs in pot and cover with about an inch or two of cold water.

    2. Bring water to a roiling boil and then immediately remove the pot from heat.

    3. Cover pot and let eggs sit for 13 minutes.

    4. Move eggs to a bowl of cold water and let sit for 10 minutes. I usually just fill a bowl with cool faucet water and add some ice.

    5. Eat or refrigerate.

This works well for me :) . Peeling, however, is another matter. Some eggs peel well, some don’t. I’ve heard that fresh eggs are more difficult to peel, but I’m not sure what makes the difference.

  5. I am a righty through and through. You should have seen me try to shoot left handed in basketball games. Airball. Maybe I should start training the girls now to be ambidextrous? :)

  6. Your poor hand! I also have a lot of trouble with my spiralizer. My dad’s an ambidextrous and I always wanted to be, too! I would occasionally try to use my left hand, but without much success.

  7. I was in a 4 wheeling accident and broke both of my wrists!! That was miserable! That pear looks delicious! My mom used to put a slight crack in the egg when she put them in boiling water. She swore that it would cook the eggs evenly and she did make a mean hard boiled egg. I’ve never been able to master that, though.

  8. I have one better for you – I broke both of my wrists in a 4 wheeling accident. That was miserable! My mom would put a slight crack in the egg shell immediately before dropping it into a boiling pot of water. She swore it cooked it quicker and she did make a great hard boiled egg. I could never master it, though.

  9. I once tried to switch over to my left hand in middle school but my teachers were not pleased with my suddenly illegible handwriting and I had to switch back to my right.

  10. oh my goodness! I hope you’re healing. I cut my hand on my spiralizer the first time I used it! What a beautiful breakfast & lunch. I am loving the lunch combo especially- I must remember to try this. Free produce? ow ow! Hope you have a great weekend. No stress about the comment issues!

  11. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who has trouble with boiling eggs. I’ve yet to perfect that skill.

I used to wish I was ambidextrous. I always thought it would be cool to switch back and forth. But I’ve never needed to so I just gave up the idea.

  12. I couldn’t write with my left hand if my life depended on it. Seriously. :D

  13. Oh the farmer and the cowboy should be friends….

You have me GEEKING OUT to R+H tunes now. Nice one.
