Meet Caroline, Age 12
In preparation for my family’s upcoming garage sale, I was rummaging through the basement this past weekend, only to discover this little gem from my past:
What you see above is my diary. Apparently, I’ve always had a predilection for zebra print:)
Ever the pack-rat, I refused to throw away this vestige of my adolescence. I immediately cracked open this now decade-old volume to find a warning message. Even the title page is representative of sassy, twelve-year-old Caroline.
After poring over these pages for the past few days, it seems that my interests then were not all that different from what they are now. The following passage summarizes them best:
Yep, my world revolved around 1) school, 2) boys, and 3) Christmas. Some things never change, I guess.
How do you think you’ve changed in the past ten years? I am much more health-conscious now than I was ten years ago; my diet consisted of Teddy Grahams and Hi-C at the time this diary was written. After reading through the entries, I would also hope that I have become more articulate and introspective over the past decade!
Fast forward to 2010: here’s what I ate today.
Although I am generally unaffected by outdoor temperatures in my food choices, the recent sweltering heat convinced me to prepare a batch of overnight oats rather than my usual piping hot variety. It’s been a while since my last batch of overnight oats, so this morning’s breakfast was a bit of an experiment in proportions. Fortunately, the end result was perfectly cool, thick, and creamy. I’ll be sure to post the recipe soon.
My lunch today was pretty faboo, thanks in large part to the peanut dressing I put together. This salad was quite a symphony of flavors, if I do say so myself.
For dinner, I tried out a recipe from the Imus Ranch Cookbook (reviewed last summer). Tonight’s menu featured Baked Curried Tofu, rolled up in a wrap with hummus. It was delicious, albeit very garlicky. Whatevs—I’m on my own tonight, so Chester is the only one who will have to suffer the consequences of my rank breath.
On that pleasant note, I bid you good night. Ciao!

1st of all — the zebra print snuggie is too dang fab! I have a cheetah print one and ADORE it!
I am so tempted to break in to some of my old journals right now for a good laugh. Oh teenage girls, we’re all the same.
That is so cute!
So nice that some things never change!
Ten years ago … pre- cell phone, texting, laptop, Facebook, job, blog, etc. I’m sure I spent a lot more time *outside* finding fun things to do. Perhaps I should take a hint from my younger self! haha
God, 10 years ago? I was a sophomore in college, living in my sorority house, had no cell phone and no car. I had just bought my very first computer!!
yeah, some things never change
) it’s really cute to find stuff like that, old diaries, some writings from our childhood. everything seemed so simple back than
10 years ago I was in university. And right now…I’m in university. Yup, things just don’t change. Although my alcohol consumption has
Black beans & mango make an excellent combination on salads. I like your twist with the sweet potato and peanut dressing though. Makes me wish I had some spinach or something so I could make myself one of those salads.
Ten years ago? Just graduated high school, about to start college, newly liberated from the worst of my disordered eating patterns, taking the summer off, moving out of home (I never moved back — sorry, love you Mom!), dating one boy but in love with another. It was a great year
I love looking back at all of my journals. Although none of them look half as snazzy as yours. Love the zebra print!
Its so much fun to find old diaries and journals! I look back and I’m amazed at the stuff I was obsessed with. Ten years ago I was 5… we had just moved to what I consider my home town in June, so that means that exactly ten years ago I might have been “helping” to unload boxes off the moving truck!
hahahaha oh my god 10 years ago i had a crush on every one of my older brother’s friends and made a list of who i liked best of which my younger sister found and proceeded to share with them all who made the list.
you bet your bottom dollar i wrote about that in my diary.
Haha- I love that your Christmas countdowns have stayed throughout the years! 10 years ago, wow… I was 17. Now I feel old! I was into dying my hair and had just discovered volleyball
Your lunch looks delicious! I need to try mango with peanut butter…yum.
I have kept a diary intermittently… fortunately NOT in middle school, or Lord knows what I would have written (I was really really really REALLY shallow then). My favorite is my one from when I was seven, in which I discuss my several “boyfriends”, one of whom was Jonathan Taylor Thomas.
Hee, what an interesting flashback. I still have my old diaries, too, and whenever I read them I cringe to see how immature and silly I was!
I’ve saved my old journal too. I hate reading it though because everything I wrote is so embarrassing!
Love the zeebra snuggie
I think it’s so cool looking back at pictures/notes/video from when you were younger. Never throw that away!
Love the zebra print diary! I bet my diary would have been similar – boys and school.
I haven’t had a mango in years – yours looks delicious!
HA! I also recently read one of my old diaries (from when I was 16)… some things have changed (the names I wrote about) but I’m still me!
Old journals are so much fun to read through! My world revolved around the same things, too..minus the school part- after 3:00 school was the last thing on my mind haha.
oh my gosh, i love the journal flashback. i have got to find my old journals now. i looove the warning message! “anywho..”
youre so awesome.
