Milestone Weekend
Valentine’s Day Weekend 2010 will forever be remembered as a weekend of multiple milestones. Since the last time I posted, several memorable events in my life have occurred:
- I completed my first 10K race. It’s been about 9 months since my last race (5K at the zoo), but I got right back into the racing groove yesterday morning. According to my Nike+, my time was 43:43…expect full details on the race in the upcoming week. Next year I hope to compete in the half-marathon event!
- I brought my first boyfriend home to meet the parents. My family was quite impressed with Seth (as expected), and the humiliating stories were kept to a minimum (at least while I was in the room!). I am quite pleased that my family’s eccentricities did not scare him away…yet.
- I celebrated my first Valentine’s Day as a non-singleton. After many years of denouncing V-Day as a marketing holiday, designed only to boost sales for Hallmark and Godiva…I might have had a change of heart this year. Let’s just say that Valentine’s Day was far superior to those of the past.
How did you spend Valentine’s Day weekend?
Now, onto the grub!
Friday
Before heading off the airport, I got a little pumpkin parfait fix. Glorious.
As per usual a packed my lunch for the airport. What can I say? I’m a cheap nutrition nerd.
For dinner, we headed to Do-Di-Yo’s, the same place we went over Thanksgiving. Guess what? I ordered the exact same thing as the last time. Amidst all the excitement, I forgot my camera…check out the Thanksgiving post for details on my rockin’ soup and salad combo.
Saturday
Saturday morning presented yet another milestone: Seth’s first experience with stovetop oatmeal. I’ve been telling him for months that it will change his life…so I whipped up a batch for the two of us using some key ingredients:
The verdict? “It tastes like restaurant oatmeal!” Yeah, I’m an oatmeal bad-ass.
For lunch, the fam indulged me and headed over to Whole Foods, where I loaded up on a big salad, featuring curried couscous salad and roasted squash.
Everyone came over to Ma and Pa’s house for dinner that night, where Mumsy made a big batch of spaghetti with meat sauce. I veganized mine using TVP (texturized vegetable protein) and a bit of onion.
Sunday
When I finally returned home from the race, I was ready for some re-fueling. I cobbled together one of the fastest breakfasts ever: Ezekiel cinnamon raisin toast with cottage cheese, plus a few of my favorite accompaniments.
As a final farewell before we headed back to Durham, the whole family had lunch at Surin of Thailand, where I ordered a tofu-tastic stir-fry. Note the plentiful broccoli:)
For suppertime, Seth and I were in the midst of traveling, so we packed our meals. In true brown-bagging form, Seth did a little labeling:
Now I am off to do some last-minute homework before class. I’ll return later with a re-cap of today’s eats! Ciao.

Hello and welcome! I have created this blog for people who love food, especially healthful, vegetarian food.
I have just graduated from Duke University with degrees in English and psychology. I plan to pursue a master's degree in nutrition starting in Fall 2010. Ideally, I would like to combine my love of food and the written word someday as a health writer.

Awwww congrats on your wonderful weekend, race and time with Seth! It sounds incredible
