Misadventures of Caroline and the Oven

For someone who spends as much time in the kitchen as I do, I experience a surprising amount of discomfort when dealing with the oven. For no particular reason, I am intensely afraid of burning myself and will do anything to avoid the fiery, gaping mouth of the oven. However, my cooking endeavors often require broiling, baking, and roasting…so I typically recruit passersby in the kitchen to transport items in and out of the oven.

Anyway, perhaps as a direct result of this oven phobia, I occasionally forget to remove dishes from it. My subconscious is apparently getting the best of me, because I have been inadvertently abandoning things in the oven of late (and leaving the oven on for far too long). You’ll see just one such catastrophe in my meals below…I hope Residence Life and Housing Services doesn’t read this, because they will for sure pronounce me as a fire hazard to Duke University. Have you had any kitchen mishaps lately?

Fortunately, my misadventures were limited to one meal today…check out the rest below:

Thursday

Not gonna lie, I popped a lot of straight up frozen in mango prior to blending up this bad boy. Frozen mango is all-around delicious, not just in smoothie form.

Friday

Told you that my Kashi sample wouldn’t go to waste! I find this cereal to be a little too sweet (yes, it is possible for me to think such a thing), so I typically mix it with a bland cereal, like TJ’s High Fiber Cereal (click for my review).

I kept it old school for lunch today. Mock tuna sandwich, apple ‘n PB, veggies ‘n salsa. Crazy delicious.

For dinner tonight, I made up another small batch of Peanut Butter Chili from the Peanut Butter and Company Cookbook using the Heat Is On PB. What you see pictured below was delicious, but I found myself thinking, “Why am I still hungry?”

…I had intended on serving my chili with baked sweet potato chips/fries, but Little Miss Scatterbrain forgot about them until after she had finished eating the rest of her dinner. Fortunately, the potatoes weren’t too burnt. Nothing a little ketchup can’t fix!

still good!

still good!

Now that I have checked and double-checked that the oven is indeed OFF, Alanna and I are headed out to a Jungle Book sing-along on campus. Yeah, don’t ask. Full details when I return…Have a good weekend!

  1. My kitchen mishap = please view my video post from last week ;) NO worries, girl!! Sweet potatoes are good no matter how burnt they may get.

Enjoy the sing-a-long… I’m DYING for the details on this one!! Hahaha.

  2. A few weeks ago I was making my favorite Banana Goodness Bread. I was testing out a new sweetener in the recipe, so when I put it in the loaf pan and it was Really thick I was quick to think it was the new sweetener. Right before I stuck it in the oven I saw the bowl of peeled bananas on the counter; I forgot to mash them and add them to the batter. That’s why it was so thick. I just took it out, mixed the bananas in, and right back in it went. And it came out good, too

  3. Haha I love your fear of the oven – I am definitely afraid of it to ;) Especially lately, since I can’t seem to get myself to make ANYTHING! I need to get bit by the cooking bug, and fast!

Love the way you slice your bananas and as always, love the way you slice apples to get as many pieces as possible. That peanut butter chili looks and sounds awesome as well – I’ve never tried that flavor of PB, but I’m intrigued!

Hope you had fun at the sing-a-long!

  4. Kitchen mishaps? Yeah, I posted it today? I nearly sliced off the tip of my thumb with my new mandolin. Fun times.

  5. i hate kitchen mishaps!! me+knives.. cutting up fruits and veggies.. is NOT a good idea! haha
and dang gurl. PB chili!!?? woo!

  6. I have kitchen mishaps more often – my favorite was the time I tried to double the recipe for homemade pizza dough – I ended up quadrupling it. I made a lot of pizza dough – it was quite chewy too.

  7. I’ve been eating frozen mango straight up for “dessert” for the last few weeks. I can’t get enough of it. The brand seems to matter a lot though.

  8. I love how you cut up your banana and leave them split like that! Cool!
Hmm…Kitchen mishaps…I once exploded an egg in the microwave?

  9. Hahaha I LOVE burnt stuff so having that phobia wouldn’t be too big of a problem for me. Although I have a habit of taking things out too SOON because the smell makes me want to gobble it up immediately.

  10. Well, we are almost the same with the oven :D I always burn myself on it, I still have scars from like, few years ago. I remember to pull out the things from it, but I usually just shove back in the dirty baking pan. And I forget about it. Awful.

  11. Very happy to have found your blog! You have a ton of great eats!

Teehee, I’m awaiting my Kashi sample.

  12. Those potatoes still look delicious… I always forget that an oven is HOT;) And yesterday I wanted to sprinkle some cinnamon on my peanut butter, but by accident sprinkled over some soy sauce. Now that’s too strange for me, so I had to throw my sandwich away and start over, ha ha!

have a great weekend! xxx Julia (Taste of Living)

  13. I’m not afraid of the oven, but I definitely should be because I have burned the tips of my fingers a lot (mainly when picking up cookie sheets :P ) I think you are somewhat justified!

Can’t wait to hear about your Jungle Book adventure!

  14. haha i love the blackened crispy ones too! I burned myself a week ago on the broiler, OMG hurt soooooo bad and I have a huge scar on my thumb!

  15. Oh no to those poor sweet potatoes!! I’ve burnt sweet potatoes in the oven before and nearly cried – such a tragedy :(

Loving the salsa/carrots! I haven’t had carrots with salsa in a while but it’s so yummy!!

  16. oven phobias are totally normal! that banana energy sundae looks ahmazing and so does that PB chili! i want this cookbook :) have a great weekend, can’t wait to hear about how the jungle book singalong went!

  17. I tend to burn my beets! They are delicate little guys.. an extra 10 minutes can turn them into chips!

At least some of the sp’s came out :)

  18. Speaking of ovens – the one in my apartment right now in Ireland doesn’t have any temperature markings on it – they’ve all worn off, so I don’t have any way of knowing what I’m doing. Back home, I’m a baking queen, but I’m terrified of the oven here!

All of your food looks delish…… so jealous.
    Love you!
    Emma

  19. I had the same Kashi sample! I wasn’t a HUGE fan of it because the little squares were so small and not very filling! Dey gots nothin on my PB puffins :D

    Ketchup saves EVERYTHING

  20. I’ve had so many mishaps lately. I wonder if people think I’m seriously cooking-impaired, haha.

Your apple slices are so pretty! I love how they are paired with PB, too. :-)

Can’t wait to hear about this Jungle Book sing along!

  21. Hahaha, oh man I’ve done that way too many times. Usually what happens is I’ll put something in the oven, put the timer on, and go blog, or read other blogs, or surf the web in general. The timer goes off, and I think, in 30 seconds I’ll up and check on that. Then suddenly it’s like, 15 minutes later, and I BOLT out of my chair, yell a bunch of expletives, and dash over to the oven. Ah, sigh.

  22. hahahaha I LOVE that you have passerbyers help you take things out of the oven. that’s awesome girl!

I burn myself on a regular basis. For some reason I tend to think my skin is made of oven mit

  23. Yum, I am loving that banana split breakfast! I have a sample of the Kashi cereal as well, and agree it is too sweet, which makes it yummy in plain yogurt :)

I have kitchen mishaps all the time– splattering things all over the place, burning, forgetting an ingredient, etc. I am definitely not a careful cook– I try though. I really do =P

  24. poor forgotten taters!!!

and can you please make me a smoothie?!

  25. The only mishap I have been having is with my morning oats. The almond milk/water combo always boils over!

Mmm those sweet potato fries look good. I love them burnt!

  26. I like all of your plates and bowls! They are such cute designs! Oh and I like the food too, of course :)

  27. Your poor sweet potatoes! I’m glad you still ate them… no SP shall be left behind!

I’ve burned my hands and arms (and even a little spot on my tummy) SO MANY times on the oven, it’s not even funny.

  28. I have been admiring your beautifully sliced apples! Can you tell me how you get them all so perfect? :)

  29. Old school lunches make anyday a million times better (even when a kitchen mishap is involved!)…I reaalllly need to try the mock tuna sandwich idea. Mouth-watering! My biggest kitchen mishap involved melting chocolate in the microwave. Let’s just say it ended with the smoke alarm going off and so much smoke that I had to open up the windows in the kitchen AND the living room. We all learn our lesson somehow, huh?! Have a relaxing Sunday and start to the school week! :)
