Missing Fred
I’ve spent this past weekend missing Fred. No, I did not acquire a second boyfriend without telling you—Fred is my beloved Jack Russell Terrier. Why the sudden longing for my four-legged friend? April 10th marks Fred’s Sweet Sixteenth birthday, and for the fourth year in a row, I was unable to give my pooch a hug on his special day.
Fred has been a fixture in my life since I was in kindergarten. I vividly remember the day we brought him home: he was small enough to fit in my tiny hands…and small enough to get lost in our freshly-mowed lawn.
Ever since, Fred has been my portable companion. He’s accompanied our family through our big move down South; he’s been my little ball of warmth on wintry nights; he’s listened to me cry about everything from boys to boobs to Duke basketball. In essence, he is the reason why I am a ‘”dog person” to my very core.
I miss my little Wishbone, and I can’t wait to return home to bake him a big batch of these:
Do you have any pets? What do they mean to you?
I promise I have some photos to share that are edible by humans too. Observe:
For breakfast this morning, I got my BioChem on with a choco-berry-coconut protein smoothie. Phenom.
Before heading out to class, I made a simple sandwich featuring my favorite combo: hummus and avocado. Seriously people, this duo rivals PB&J in its harmony of flavah.
As part of the dining committee meeting this evening, we all headed out to the new “Devil’s Bistro” that I mentioned in yesterday’s post. After scoping out the menu on Friday night, I was pretty much sold on that Tofu Masala Salad…so that’s precisely what I ordered. The verdict? This was probably one of the best meals I’ve ever enjoyed on Duke’s campus—it was healthy, vegetarian, and (most importantly) crazy-delish. Bravo, Duke Dining.
Off to do some work…or perhaps take a peek into the life of the Roloffs. Have a good night, everyone!

Aww happy birthday to Fred! And I completely understand your pain and hope you can be with him soon. Last month was the longest time I’ve been away from my dog–4 weeks–and I could hardly stand it. I think pets are the biggest unrecognized casualty when it comes to moving to college
I bet Chooey and Fred would get along quite well
Happy belated birthday to him!
Fred is sixteen?!? Holy cow! That’s old for a dog, right?
Regardless, happy b-day Fred! I’m pretty sure I treat Nylah better than I will my own children
I’ve never pet in my life, but I’m planning to have one when I have a big house!
Happy birthday to Fred! At least next year you’ll be able to be together
My doggie died my freshman year in college
I miss her! Now I have my boyfriend’s family’s puppy in my life, Oliver. I know he would love those peanut butter bites! Do you have a recipe?
Fred is way cute!!! I have 3 cats and love them to death. They’re very different from each other and between the 3 of them possess great (pet) qualities. My oldest is 14 and he was like my first child. He’s been with my hub and I since we moved out together…
Happy birthday to Fred!
I have to admit that your hummus avocado sandwich looks crazily delish…but I still stand by my BBQ quorn and hummus!
Glad the new restaurant was so good- looks incredible!
Aww! what a cutie. I have a pet parakeet named Jellybean, and I’ve had him for 10 years! He’s definitely our beloved family pet, even if he’s not a big animal like a dog or cat.
I love Fred as well!

Fred is adorable! Happy b-day to him. I have had dogs my whole life and am definitely a dog person! Cats are too sneaky.
As for the Roloffs – I love them too.
Fred is adorable! I miss my poodle (and my unborn pug), too.
