Muscle…Water?

If you’ve ever set foot in a gym, you’ve likely encountered Muscle Milk. This nutrient-enhanced beverage has become a favorite with athletes and gym-goers everywhere for its sky-high protein content, impressive vitamin/mineral fortification, and variety of indulgent flavors. Although some would assume that a product with “milk” in it name would actually contain dairy, those “vanilla creme” and “chocolate malt” concoctions contain no milk. As a result of this alleged deception, Nestle, which produces milk-based products (e.g., Nesquik, Carnation Instant Breakfast) has  filed a complaint with the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus. Apparently, Nestle has gotten its panties in a wad because Muscle Milk’s labelling is “deceptively misdescriptive.” Although I have never tried a Muscle Milk product myself, I don’t believe that people buy it because they believe that it contains actual milk. Rather, they buy Muscle Milk for its ridiculously high protein counts and dessert-like flavors, so whether or not it contains actual milk is inconsequential. Nonetheless, it could be deemed false advertising. Do you think Nestle’s claim is valid? Have you ever been victim to false advertising or deceptive food labeling?

Well, there’s one sure way to avoid confusing product claims–eat fruits and vegetables. Lots of them. That’s what I did today:

Monday

Strategy #1 to beat smoothie boredom: squeeze as many fruits as possible into a single beverage.

This morning I encountered an almost-empty nut butter jar in the fridge, with just a smidge of cashew goodness lurking at the bottom. I hopped on the jarred oats train and used the jar as my bowl. Totally delicious. Quick! I need to buzz through some nut butter fast so I can use this trick again!

Hmm what's a girl to do with an almost empty nut butter jar?

You may recall that I had a minor obsession with storebought lemon hummus a few weeks ago. I whipped up my own version today (with my NEW hand blender), and it was phenom. I tweaked the flavor a bit with a little ginger and sweetness. I’ll update the hummus recipe page ASAP.

Dinner was a random salad that ended up pretty tasty. My gorgeous heirloom tomatoes from Serenbe formed the base, along with eggplant grilled on the old GF.

  1. I can’t wait to have an empty nut butter jar!

Good luck with your last day of class!

    Keri~

  2. You’re right. I’ll just stick to the fruits & veggies ;)

That spatula is adorable, I must say. You lived in Mountain Brook, huh? Vestavia’s soccer team’s greatest rival >)

  3. grilled eggplant salad?? count me in!!

I thinK i need to up my nut butter consumption so I can have more empty jars.. oh wait, I already do! lol

  4. i made a really simple standard hummus today that i’m going to post the recipe for as well! that lemon hummus looks really good though, so i’m sure i’ll probably be making your recipe! and i honestly think that nestle’s claim is insane. so i guess every company that sells non-dairy milk should be sued then? soy milk? rice milk? almond milk? they’re all called “milk.” it’s ridiculous that this is even a lawsuit. that’s MY opinion.

  5. Wish I could enter your chobani giveaway….but I’d have no where to store it once I got to school! :(

Always lovinggg your hummus creations! Who needs sabra?! ;)

  6. That does seem like a bit of a silly claim to make about the Muscle Milk. My dad drinks it every morning in a protein shake (why i have no idea haha) and he could care less whether it has dair in it or not. He adds milk to it lol I think the whole point of the milk concept plays on the theory that drinking milk makes you strong and healthy, thus anything milk will attribute to bone, muscle, and strength improvement. I just think Nestle needs to untangle their panties from being in a bunch. haha

And ughh I have yet to try oats in a jar but really need to!

  7. You are seriously the salad queen!

  8. Oats in a jar and lemon hummus!? I’m coming over to eat ;)

  9. I could find many more things to file lawsuits upon. Nestle is just out to be another avaricious corporation. I don’t know much of Muscle milk, however I despise Nestle. They have huge marketing and PR teams that cover their butts with everything. I know in 2004 there were GMOs found in China, the fix prices, and claim to support fairtrade.

  10. Ah, isn’t the jarred oats the best trick for getting out every last bit of butter? I just tried that this weekend for the first time. Dark Chocolate Dreams = thoroughly demolished. But I failed to employ the spatula! Genius – I will have to remember that for the next nut butter jar mercy mission.

  11. Empty nut butters = THE BEST :D
I used to scrape em to hell so none of it went to waste, until I found out I could use even more of it by using it as a container for cereal/oatmeal/what-have-you. It was such a lightbulb moment ;p

  12. Oh Nestle, I think there are bigger battles they could spend their money on than taking down Muscle Milk.

Anywho! I’m feeling the urge for some lemon hummus! Lemon, coconut, the food blogs have definitely changed my taste buds!

  13. Yay for the lemon hummus!!! I love how you put the lemon zest on yours!! Also, I haven’t’ been blogging for a while. I came back today and saw the broccoli cartoon girl up there. SO CUTE!!!!! I love her red heels! LOL!

  14. i heard a similar thing last year about their candy bars, particularly their “chocolate” bars…i read that they couldnt use chocolate in the name or something since it wasnt really a dairy product? i dont know…shady business.

  15. haha love your almost empty jar solution :) I love doing that with the leftovers of peanut butter jars!!

  16. Well, it could be labeled “milk” because it tastes like milk. I don’t think it is false or deceptive.

Hehe, maybe I should try that fruit idea into my morning smoothies as well. I have a new green powder I’m not liking too much…

    Loving the pink spatula!

I’ve tried so many of your hummus recipes, with much success, so I must make this one too! Good timing, because I’m in a hummus rut ;)

  17. i seriously need to get to the end of my almond butter jar so i can do this. i die everytime i see it it looks amazingggggggg

  18. wow that is really interesting about the MM. i love the stuff, i drink the chocolate muscle milk light sometimes~it does TASTE like milk, regardless of what is in it. when i worked at a snowboard shop another shop tried to sue them for their name.. weird.

loving that snacky plate of colorfulness!
