Oatmeal Eaters: Sexy but Boring?

So today I was doing a little research for my upcoming paper about the social influences of eating (yes, I actually get some school-work done occasionally!), and I stumbled upon quite an interesting finding:

In a study done by Oakes and Slotterback (2004-2005), oatmeal eaters were perceived as “more intelligent, more responsible, and more moral” than their pie-eating counterparts…BUT they were also perceived as less humorous and more boring.

So, basically we oatmeal eaters are sexy but boring? Well, that’s a back-handed compliment if I’ve ever heard one! As an oatmeal enthusiast myself, I am uncertain as to how I feel about this contrast of physical versus social appeal, but I do know that I will never stop eating my oats, no matter how people perceive me. How would you describe the typical oatmeal eater? Don’t worry, you won’t hurt my feelings;)

I am actually kind of anxious to get back to my research—I have hopes that I will find some more interesting nuggets to share with you all. So, without further ado, I present you with my eats:

Tuesday

Way back in the days of The Broccoli Hut’s infancy (summer 2008), I was mildly obsessed with mango-hemp smoothies. Let’s just say that my passion has been rekindled.

Wednesday

Rather than do work yesterday afternoon, I decided to perform surgery on my newly purchased pomegranate. The process was decidedly less hideous than the last time (but I still had to soak my apron to get a few splatters out!). Anyway, the point is: all the work involved in preparing pom seeds is so worth it. They were the perfect topping for my waffles this morning.

After reading about Trader Joe’s Sesame Soy Ginger salad dressing on Allie’s blog, I decided to try it for myself. Today I used it as both a marinade and a salad dressing. It’s a delicious combination of sweet and savory, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Although I am quite infatuated with Pumpkin Bulghur Chili, I decided to expand my pumpkin soup horizons this evening, with Pumpkin Corn Chowder a recipe from Imagine Foods. I added some kidney beans for protein, and the end result was fabulous—the perfect blend of smoky, salty, and sweet. I can’t wait to make this again.

Off to be a good little student. Nighty-night.

  1. That dressing makes the BEST tofu marinade!! I am about to crack open my pom too….picking out those little seedlings is always such a drag but the end result is well worth it.

    I’m outta waffffffles!!!! Nooooo!

  2. I eat oatmeal and I’m pretty fun. It might just be the way the study was designed! Pie? Like were people eating pie for breakfast?

  3. i LOVE that dressing I use it on my tofu and marinating chicken!

hmm interesting study on the oatmeal…I eat oatmeal, does that mean I am boring :)

  5. Chocolate pomegranite waffles?? Umm yum!!

sexy but boring?? That is definitely a strange combo! I guess if that’s so I’m in that category! lol

  6. Your waffles look like a beautiful Xmas present! Sadly, I think it is possible to be both sexy and boring…frankly, I’m neither :)

  7. oh my goodness those waffles are gorgeous! And I’m sure they were delicious too :o

and I think one of my housemates’ breakfast choices: eating special k with red berries at least 75% of the time, is much more boring than oatmeal. ;)

  8. Interesting research!! I totally LOVE food research :-)

I used to think that oatmeal eaters were boring – until I discovered toppings, and started eating oatmeal. I think food bloggers who eat oatmeal are less boring than the average person who eats oatmeal, because bloggers put all sorts of interesting/ creative things on their oats.

Your eats look absolutely delicious! I am getting hungry now.

  9. I think we oatmeal eats are sexy AND interesting!
How can we be boring with all that oatmeal creations? Ridiculous.

  10. Oatmeal eaters are sexy and not a little bit boring;)

    Loving your eats!

xxx Julia (aka oatmeal lover:p) (Taste of Living)

  11. I wonder how Brian Boitano would describe them….

    ;)

  12. I think the description isn’t that bad…. we oatmeal eaters are more traditional, conservative than our piers! :)
    love that waffle topping! :)

  13. what does it say about my dull 40 year old life that I think HELL TO THE YEAH ILL TAKE SEXY AND BORING!! :)

  14. Oatmeal eaters are sexy, beautiful, strong, and brilliant! I mean, look how creative we get?!

  15. Beautiful eats as usual.. only you could make waffles look that pretty!

Studies are stupid.. and I say that as a former psychology student AND wife of a school psychologist..lol

  16. yum i love that you added pom seeds to your waffles! they look so divine! and with chocolate? hey girlllllll heyyy

  17. I have yet to crack open a pomagranate – it looks like a lot of work! Those seeds are delicious, though!

  18. I love how your waffles match the plate! They look so good :)

  19. haha. I am not an oatmeal fan in the slightest, although I will eat it occasionally. I’m not all that fond of grains.

    The tofu looks tasty!

  20. At my age I’ll take sexy even if it’s dished up with a little boring!!! :) LOL!

  21. Boring?! We’re pretty creative with our toppings, I think!

That chowder sounds amazing! I might have to make that… I’m a little afraid of cooking my own pumpkin though, I’m embarrassed to admit!

  22. I think the standard instant oats cooked in water is boring. But blogger creations? Never boring!

  23. sexy but boring? how how wrong they are! sexy, fun and fabulous – that is what we are!

  24. Oatmeal eaters are the best! Go us!

  25. I don’t think they’ve seen our oats!

  26. I agree about the POM – a pain but totally worth it.

I think there is nothing wrong with oatmeal eating – if it makes me boring then who cares.

  27. Oh no, definitely not boring. We are smart and interesting people for sure! I also love oatmeal, eat it basically everyday and never get tired of it!
    Love your food!

  28. What an interesting study! What they don’t take into account is what type of oatmeal eater you are. I think us bloggers are quite creative with our oats. My Dad, on the other hand, eats his oats with butter and maple syrup…every single time. So you can put all oatmeal eaters into one group!

  29. Ha – that is really funny. Who thinks to do these studies anyway?! :D I agree with you though.

LOVE the colors in your waffles and that soup sounds AWESOME!

  30. Oatmeal eaters are the cream of the crop if you ask me. I’m an oatmeal eater and never going back. Even if that makes me boring haha

I lurrrrrrv tjs ginger soy dressing!

  31. Oatmeal eaters are beautiful, intelligent, and healthy individuals :)

That chili looks amazing and I love the waffle toppings!

  32. Ha, if sexy but boring describes me, I’ll take it! As long as I get to eat oatmeal, I don’t really care how you describe it. :) But how weird in the first place to generalize personality traits of people who eat a food habittually! Interesting nonetheless.

  33. I loved everything you made in this post! Can you just move to MA and make me everything you make for your eats? Or, maybe I should just move to NC? Funny about the pomegranate…I was at Trader Joe’s today and saw a pomegranate and wanted to buy one, but I have no idea how to cut one up? And the pom arils were $4 a box – yikes! But your waffle looked so darn good!

  34. Good on ya for breaking down that pomegranate. They are totally worth it, no? :)
