Ode to Sheila

Every Thursday for the past 14 years, I’ve woken up to a bed of wrinkly sheets and a bedroom floor strewn with books, Furbies, and various other vestiges of my life. Seemingly by magic, I would arrive home from school to a bed with fresh bedding and a room of perfect organization. This weekly transformation was not an act of magic, however. Rather, it was the work of Sheila.

My mom hired Sheila to clean our house back when my family first moved to Alabama in 1996, and she has been a fixture in my life ever since. Aside from family members, I have known very few people for as long as I’ve known Ms. Sheila. As you might expect in all that time, this goddess of cleanliness has come to know the Yoders quite well. She’s seen it all—she’s witnessed my impromptu dance parties after a good workout; she’s watched me struggle and recover from anorexia, and I’m pretty sure she’s been present for more than a few of my tantrums over the years. As my mom likes to say, “she knows all our dirt.” Accordingly, Sheila has become a dear family friend and has attended both of my sisters’ weddings; you can be sure she would be on the guest list for mine if I ever get married.

Now that I’m a “grown-up,” and there’s a possibility that I’ll be moving out of my parents’ house forever, I am suddenly struck with an appreciation for everything she’s done for me—and I’m not just referring to her perfect bed-making skills! Thank you Sheila, for all your kindness.

So, now it’s your turn—tell me about your family friends from past and present.

Alright, alright. I’ll get onto the food part already.

Another banana-and-bloobs combo was on the menu this morning. I’m fresh out of oat bran (gasp!), so I had to settle for a multigrain hot cereal (Bob’s Red Mill). Still just as tasty:)

It’s been far too long since I made a batch of homemade hummus, so I blended together my Spinach Hummus for lunch today, with mucho red pepper action. Caroline likey the spicy.

Mumsy decided to make waffles for dinner this evening. I liked the idea of a breakfast for dinner evening (brinner?), but I opted to make myself an omelet. Although it was not nearly as pretty as my last omelet, it was still quite satisfying.

Okee, Greta and Rainer are threatening to destroy this laptop if I don’t pay attention to them soon. Ciao!

  4. Love the sound of that spinach hummus!

  5. breakfast for dinner is always the best!

it sounds like you have a really great relationship with Sheila, it will be sad when you won’t have her around.

I have known my best friend for as long as I’ve lived – my mom and her mom were best buddies before we were born. she knows everything about me, she’s like a second sister i love her!

  6. Heh, my cat’s name is Shelia! And so was my little brother’s nanny when he was a baby, who happens to be one of our close family friends! I wish we could have a maid… that would be amazing… I do all the cleaning in my household, and its like I never rest! I’m eating an omelete for breakfast right now. With blueberry protein pancakes! Yumm.

  7. Omelettes are hard to make pretty- your looks great! Where did you live before Alabama? I have moved a lot so few non-family people have been consistent in my growing up, but my great aunt and uncle have had a housekeeper (live-in) since before I was born…she’s part of the family now!

  8. Brinner is the best!!! And I loveeee Edible Arrangements. I’ve always secretly hoped I would receive one at college, but alas, it never happened. That’s nice you had a wonderful relationship with your housekeeper. Ours have come and gone so much over the years that I’ve never connected with any of them on a deeper level than mere small talk.

  9. Awwww – I have someone in my life that does the same thing for me and my family! She´s called Hosanete, and she´s been taking care of my little sister and the house itself for 4 years now. We absolutely love her. She´s definetely someone I know I could count on, under any circumstance. She´s the best :)
    Loved eats as always, Caroline!
I just wanted to ask you – when you decided to became a vegetarian, did you get your parents approval straight away? I´m struggling a bit – I really wanted to stop eating meat, but I have zero support from them… They say I must eat meat, and they make me eat it.
What happend when you became vegetarian?
    Wish you a lovely weekend!
    Brazilian XOXO´s,
    Gabriela

  10. Growing up, we had a cleaning lady come over once a month or so and I had to clean my room FOR the lady…ugh. It was always this big hey day leading up to her arrival to clean up the house….so that she could clean. Made no sense. I could have used a Sheila that’s for sure!

For some reason seeing eggies on your blog makes me happy.

  11. Your hummus creations always look so good!
