Oven One, Caroline Zip

As I’ve mentioned before, the oven and I are not on the best of terms. I have an intense phobia of being burned by the fiery abyss sitting in the kitchen, and today my fears were realized. Check out my battle scars:

It was not all for naught, however, I did get some tasty eats out of my battle with the oven…but you’ll have to read on to find out more on that. Have you ever burned yourself in the kitchen? Got any tips for a less-than-graceful cook?

Fortunately, my other eats were relatively hazard-free today. Check ‘em out:

Tuesday

Yet another smoothie that looks like sludge but tastes like fruity joy.

Wednesday

My loaf of Ezekiel Cinnamon Raisin bread may have cost $5.29, but I sure have savored it—I bought it at the beginning of September, and I’ve still got several slices left. Ezekiel=precious goods.

Lunch-time is when I incurred my aforementioned injury. I was roasting up some Pumpkin Spice Chickpeas (a la Mama Pea), when my trusty egg-timer rang, and I hustled into the kitchen to slide them out of the oven. One slip of the pan, and soon I was muttering expletives under my breath. Anyway, the meal was worth the pain because I made a delightful “Harvest Salad” using sweet potatoes, grilled pears, pecans, and cranberries.

I’ve been working hard on my final projects this evening, but I finally took a break for dinner. Tonight’s menu featured Thai Peanut Soup and a juicy orange.

I am off to rehearse my presentation a few more times. Good night!

  1. I SWEAR I have the same damage on my left arm from the oven!

I also get a lot of toaster oven and even frying pan scars. Good luck on your presentation!

  2. I burn myself in the kitchen so often!
I can cook pretty well, but always forget that my hands aren’t made of everything-resistant-material;)

  3. Oh man- I totally have similar burns! It happens like the millisecond you’re not 150% careful! Dinners soup looks so good. Love savory pumpkin recipes

  4. Oh no! Burns are nasty. I have an intense fear of walking past a fryer/hot grill for the same reason.

+ peanut soup, really peanut anything = L.O.V.E.

    : D

  5. I burned myself with the oven severals times because I was lazy to put the oven gloves :( now, lesson learned, I religiously put it on before opening the oven.

  8. I have burned myself too many times to count! Most of the times, it has been out of my own carelessness (being a total klutz doesn’t help either). Looks like you need to invest in some good oven mitts!

  9. I have a scar just like that one on my little finger; I once BRILLIANTLY picked up a hot oven grate with my bare hands.

    Good luck on your presentation!

  10. Your poor arm! I have more scars on my hands and arms from cooking than should be possible. I literally do it every single time I cook! Must invest in better potholders…

  11. Aww that looks like it hurts! I burn myself a lot so no tips here :(

  12. I am always burning myself- now I have HUGE oven mitts that cover most of my arms!

Salad does look worth a few injuries (kidding, but it does look great!)

    Good luck with the presentation!

  13. I hate burning myself – I do it all the time!

Good luck on the presentation – your salad combo sounds delicious – grilled pears!?!

  14. I like roasted chickpeas too! Have a recipe for an Indian spiced version of it, let me know if you would like the recipe, I can send it to you!
I am the queen of kitchen accidents, I cut and burn myself often. I cook everyday, for all meals in my family (me, husband and son) including making lunches to bring to school and work, so even though I am very comfortable around the kitchen I still have little accidents happen here and there. It is part of the cooking fun, you end up having some stories to tell along with your best recipes! :-)
    Hope it heals soon!

  15. Yes! I have definitely burnt myself in the kitchen – it takes all the power within me not to drop a few swear words but, call me old fashioned, I don’t swear in front of my parents ;)

I need to do the CC combo with cinnamon raisin bread – that sounds fantastic. Hope your presentation goes well!!

PS. Yes, Elf was the first holiday movie I pulled out!

  16. I have burned myself more than I’d like to admit… But I find an odd sense of pride in my cooking burns. All for the sake of food!

Your Harvest Salad looks and sounds insanely delicious.

  17. I’ve burned myself plenty. The secret? Do it enough that you lose feeling on that part of the skin

  18. Ouch! I’m sorry about the burn.

    The salad looks very tasty!

  19. PUMPKIN SPICE chikpeas?! holy moly those sound amazing! thank you for linking the recipe, caroline!!! I love your recipes and all your food always looks so pretty!!

    good luck on the presentation!!

  20. I’ve gotten some really bad burns before. The most painful was when I was working at Starbucks . . . 180 degree coffee poured all over my hand and arm. And there was a line to the door and only one other person working with me. I could barely talk because I was on the verge of crying, but there was that line so I had to keep taking orders. Ouch.

  21. Oh gosh… I have burned myself so many times in the kitchen. I too have some batter scars. Thai soup looks great! Yum!

  23. Oven burns are so painful! I hope it feels better soon. I always just attack my aloe plant and slather as much goo over my arm as possible. Seems to heal it quickly. I love your combination of Thai Peanut Soup and a juicy orange. Perfection!
