Please Pass the Biscuits

Earlier this semester, I mentioned that I would have to taste and evaluate a meat dish for one of my classes. Today was the day, as we discussed meat cookery by tasting beef stew.

To be honest, I really did not enjoy the beef, as the texture was stringy, and there was little flavor. The carrots and potatoes were quite delicious though! After this experience, I don’t foresee myself returning to an omnivorous diet anytime soon.

The second part of the lab session was spent preparing foods I find much more appealing—quick breads! On the menu for today were scones, biscuits, and pancakes.

For the scones, I was in charge of determining the amount of cranberries to mix in…obviously I erred on the generous side.

The biscuits were tender and tasty ; one professor had high praise for their lovely “flake.” While they were delicious, these biscuits were hardly nutritious—the recipe included both shortening (for texture) and butter (for flavor).

My lab partners and I got a little crazy with the mix-ins when it came to making the pancakes. I think it’s clear that all three of us really like chocolate.

What was the last food you ate that’s out of the ordinary for you? I haven’t had beef in close to seven years, and I probably haven’t enjoyed a biscuit since elementary school!

Aside from lab-time nibbles, I did manage to have some balanced meals.

This morning I opened up the fridge to find an almost-empty almond butter jar. Yeah, Oats In a Jar was mandatory.

The mid-day meal was a collection of lunch box favorites—Broccoli Hut favorites, that is.

For dinner, I fired up the oven for some roasted veggie action and maple-coconut tofu.

Now, if you’ll excuse me Glee beckons for my attention!

  1. Wow! Must have been an interesting day trying all of those foods after all this time. I love scones and pancakes. I would have had no problem sampling those two ;) I haven’t eaten an out of the ordinary food in quite some time. Josh loves sunflower seed butter. I need to pick some up this week.

  2. So you had to break your commitment to vegetarianism just for that!? That’s annoying, for lack of a better word. I hope your stomach felt okay–I guess you didn’t have to eat much though.

    Chocolate chip pancakes–mmmm!

  3. Just got your comment about the spelt flour! I think I have a slight allergy to wheat, so I try to limit it.

I LOVE spelt flour though. It is a little lighter than wheat flour, but it still has that earthy taste and all of the benefits of whole grains. I am planning on doing a post on spelt so stay tuned.

  4. ugh i would have been mad about the beef stew! like of all the beefs you had to eat that would not be the one i would want to! glad you got through it though and rebounded with some oiaj!

  5. After beeing nearly vegan for one and half years I wnt to marroco with my boyfriend to visit some family he has there…food is the biggest part of theire culture and everything eveolves around it. They are so polite and full of restritions that they use food to understand eachother..It is impossible to go to somebodys home and not get offered a meal..and a meal are no milk and cookies but huge chicken , and meat, pita bread, eggs…well all not so vegan….So to be polite I HAD to eat something and seeing those chicken running through the mountains that have not even cars around I thought back to how lucky we are that we can afford this lifestyle…I ate chicken..and chicken again…i put the thoughts of dead flesh away and ate..it was tasty..to me. But my stomach husrt sooooooooo much. sooooo much! Crazy how the body changes..well Love your post again! like always ;)

  6. veggies cooked with meat is always tastier than the meat! :)

  7. Hotdogs. I can’t remember the last time I ate one, but I used to be such a fanatic about them. Seriously.

Lovin’ the oats in a jar! :D

  8. Though I like it when I have it, I rarely eat seafood. I actually really enjoy scallops but don’t make them and only occasionally order them when out. My hubby’s not big on the ocean proteins so maybe I’ve just been away from them too long.
Btw…love the look of your pancakes.

  9. I really like biscuits but don’t think to make them often! I don’t think i’ve eaten anything lately that I haven’t had for awhile…

  10. It’s great that you’re so flexible about the meat tasting!

I LOVE scones and biscuits, but don’t have them nearly enough! My mom makes fabulous ones… I may have to talk to her about that ;-)

  11. Did you ask your professor if you could exclude yourself from eating the beef? I wonder if they make exceptions for that

  12. Hi Caroline!
I made my first ever batch of homemade hummus (pumpkin chili!) and wanted to know – how long does it last? And how do I tell when it has gone bad?

    Thanks!

    Courtney

  13. whoa. i cant believe you had to eat meat. how weird. i think i may have thrown up…

  14. I still find it weird they forced you to eat the meat. I know we are not required to do so if we don’t eat meat.

  15. I love bad-for-you biscuits. They taste like home to me.
I totally would eat all those pancakes.

  16. Spaghetti squash! I’m so behind on making it this year. Gotta get on that.
