Resolution Check-In: Running

I hope I’m not bombarding you all with progress reports on my resolutions. I just wanted to write up a quick summary of how my running goal has been coming along.

I set the goal of running 365 miles in 365 days for 2013. As is my habit, I set up a couple ways to track my progress.

The first is a paper running log in which I record my mileage, pace, etc.

I also use dailymile to track my runs electronically. While I like the tidy charts and graphs, I also like the social aspect of this site. I enjoy giving and receiving support from other runners and athletes.

Between these two tools, I’ve gathered a few facts:

  • I hate running in the cold. 95% of my workouts have been on the treadmill this past month. For the few (chilly) runs that were run outside, my pace was slower. Spring-time needs to get here fast so I can part ways with the treadmill.
  • Be vigilant to avoid injury. I haven’t had any old injuries flare up again (knock on wood), and I think it’s because I’ve been consistently wearing compression socks, foam-rolling, and stretching.
  • My distance goal is attainable. I ran 62 miles in the month of January. If I keep increasing my mileage as I have been (and avoid injury), then I think I can easily achieve 365 miles this year.

Do you track your exercise in any way? What have you been doing to stay fit thus far in 2013?

  1. I’m a total believer in compression socks and I foam roll DAILY. I can feel a huge difference in my legs when I don’t foam roll.

  2. Thanks for the reminder to foam roll! I haven’t used mine in ages, but now that I’m starting to increase mileage, I think it’s a good idea to begin again. It really does make such a difference!

  3. I do not keep track of my fitness because I do the same thng. The elliptical. I know experts want us to spice it up but this is what I like, it keeps me fit, and uninjured.

  4. I have not been running at all…maybe 3 times this whole year (2013 that is). But I don’t really run in the cold either…40 degrees is my cut off normally! I did log 4 miles this morning (it was 36 degrees). Come spring I hope to run more!

You inspired me to check out dailymile, so I just signed up!

  5. [...] from using the training schedule, I recently discovered dailymile.com (after seeing it on Caroline’s blog).  I thought it was a pretty cool tool, so I signed [...]
