Return of Snack-time

As a tiny kindergartener, I loved school for two reasons:

1) the seemingly infinite supply of crayons

and

2) snack-time

Indeed, the only thing that could tear me away from my intense coloring sessions was the unique pleasure derived from Teddy Grahams and apple juice.

Sadly, snacktime disappeared once I entered first grade. There was “no time” for mid-day culinary delights. I suppose learning to read does take precedence over playing house with animal crackers.

For 18 years now, I had presumed that snacktime at school was a thing of the past. However, today I was proven wrong—we had snack-time in the middle of a graduate nutrition class.

Technically, the snack was part of our classwork—we students had to evaluate ten different food items using sensory information (i.e., taste, smell, texture, appearance). This “snack” was also quite a departure from kindergarten fare in that the menu included: olives, grapefruit, apples, cayenne pepper, mouthwash, chocolate, potato chips, frosting, dried pineapple, and (my favorite) Fage 2% Greek yogurt.

I think I’m gonna like this class.

What do you miss most about kindergarten? I miss snacktime plenty, but I think a re-institution of naptime would be pretty awesome too.

Aside from mid-day snacking, here’s what I munched on the rest of the day.

Breakfast was yet another fig experiment.

I brought along some artichoke hummus for lunch. Tasty…but I had some rank garlic breath for the remainder of the afternoon.

I periodically browse old issues of Clean Eating Magazine (I have every issue, after all), and I recently came across an interesting recipe for Grape & Pistachio Couscous. The couscous was actually part of a Cornish hen recipe, but as you’ll see below, I came up with a vegetarian alternative. I am quite pleased with the way this meal turned out—I loved the texture contrast (crunchy pistachios & squishy grapes) as well as the spice mixture (ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg).

Alright, off to get cozy with the ol’ Google Reader. G’night.

  1. I used to LOVE naptime!

  2. I miss nap time – I never took advantage of it! I’d hide in the playhouse in the classroom and read a book with my flashlight.

  3. Snack time! How fun is that. I totally miss nap time and recess! The figs look so beautiful on top of the waffles. And I am craving your artichoke hummus mmmm

  4. We had a loft you could climb up and read. So much fun!

  5. Oh man, snack time! Yeah that was mostly teddy grahams and ritz bits sandwich crackers I think. Your grad school menu sounds quite a bit more tasty…and adult-flavored. :) I wish I had appreciated nap time more in kindergarten–I never could fall asleep! To this day I’m still not much of a napper, but when I do, it’s a savior.

  6. ur “figspirement” looks pretty wonderful!!
i loved coloring in kindergarden..if i could have done it all day i would..and snack time was great too except a bit of a torture since everyone else seemed to have the cutest little gourmet packed snackies in bags.. i usually had the boring wrapped up soggy PB and J with an apple and some peek freen cookies.. all i wanted to do was trade them for gourmet cheese and crisp wheat crackers with chocolate covered almonds for a snack….oh well, at least i can now :) hehe

    xoxo

  7. The figs look so yummy! I just bought some dried figs and have been putting them in my oatmeal but I have to say I don’t think I have ever had a fresh one…

Adding them to the top of my shopping list right now ; )

  8. Great minds think alike– I had tofu marinated in Annie’s gingerly v. last night, too! Cah-razy!…And broccoli, with cabbage that is…

  9. Haha, I love this post. I would love to have some good old show ‘n tell happening. You can learn so much about people, right?!
Your grilled tofu looks absolutely fantastic– I’m going to try using that as a marinade– looks quick and easy! YUM!
