Saga of the Cyclops and Flashing the Fishies

Good evening, blogland, and Happy 4th of July to those of you in the US! The past few days at the Broccoli Hut have consisted of much celebration, particularly in light of my recent acceptance into graduate school. There were a few hiccups in the weekend’s festivities, however. As the pictures below will indicate, this Fourth of July celebration has seen a Cyclops Boxer pup and some accidental skinny dipping…

Saturday

The weekend began like any other—a long morning run, followed by a mondo smoothie.

In preparation for relaxation time at the lake, I headed to Barnes & Noble for a few books by my favorite authors (thanks for the gift certificate, Sharon!).

The lunch-time fare was pretty standard too…but friggin’ fraggin’ delicious.

Then it was time to pack a few groceries for the weekend. Which item is not like the others?

Dinner-time rolled around soon enough, and I made myself a batch of Creamy Tofu Pesto Pasta.

Sunday

I awoke to a room bathed in sunlight…and a rumbling tummy. Egg white omelet to the rescue!

Unfortunately, in the midst of his romping on the porch, Mr. Rainer got a wicked sting from a particularly sassy wasp.

After a quick run to Wal-Mart for first aid supplies for poor Rainer, it was time for lunch.

Then the fam all headed out on the lake for some tube time.

…and then my bathing suit bottoms fell off. I was able to save them from fading into lake-bottom oblivion with my toes—but not before I flashed all the fishies of Lake Martin. Yikes!

We had the traditional 4th of July spread for dinner, featuring hamburgers, ribs, sausage, baked beans, watermelon, and corn on the cob. As you might expect, I opted to prepare a meatless main dish. I made some BBQ tofu with a simple homemade sauce, and it was delicious—but the real star of the show was the produce. The watermelon was candy-sweet, and I’m pretty sure that was the best corn I’ve ever eaten in my life.

Alright, another round of Scrabble plus a fireworks viewing are in order. Good night!

  2. Poor Rainer getting stung by a wasp, hope he is feeling better! Your dinner looks amazing, hope you have a great Monday!

  3. i had that happen to me once…i was on vacation in jamaica and we went on a hike to a place where there was a rope you could use to swing into a pool of deep water. being the adventurer i am, i went for it and ended up hooking my thumb on my bikini top right as i let go. goodbye top, hellooooo everything else!

it looks like you had a really amazing fourth. your bbq tofu looks super delish!

  4. oh my goodness! Poor Rainer! Frank is allergic to bees/wasps and blows up exactly like that when stung. Glad the little dude is ok. And whooooops about losing your bottoms- thank goodness you saved them from sinking. Your pesto pasta looks so delicious

  6. totally jealous of your omelette-making skills!!

and HA re: the bottoms :)

  7. You’ve made an excellent book choice with “Emma”. It’s an amazing book!! i also look the TV series that was on too! If you haven’t seen it yet i would definitely recommend it! Ramola Garai is such a wonderful actress!!!

I must admit, i’m so jealous of your perfect omelette. Why do mine never turn out so neat??! i must get some tips from you! probably abandoning the pan mid prep to catch something on TV doesn’t go in my favour!

oh i’m so familiar with the goodbye bikini situation..although it usually happens to my bikini top…EMBARASSMENT!XX

  8. Everything looks delicious! You are quite the omelet genius. I just had an omelet for lunch…absolute perfection.

  9. I’m drooling at the tofu pesto pasta!

  10. Oh no that bathing suit bottom thing sounds embarassing! At least you didn’t lose them :)

I changed into my bathing suit at a bbq this weekend and put my dress on over it and right when I walked out someone told me my dress was stuck in my bathing suit bottom. I’m glad they told me right away!

  11. Lol! at least you were able to save them! Tubing is so much fun! I love your fourth meal too, especially the corn, we don’t have any native corn here yet and I can’t wait!

  12. Fun story: my last day interning at DETAILS back in 2004, I was wearing a sundress. (I was supposed to go to an outdoor graduation party straight after.) In a sudden movement to grab the phone, BOTH straps broke, and the dress slipped down to reveal my lady lumps in full display in front of my boss and (male) fellow intern. It was totally mortifying, and I had to bat down “wardrobe malfunction” jokes for months after, since it was right on the heels of Janet Jackson’s little superbowl fiasco. Go Gena.

    Gorgeous BBQ tofu!
