Scared into Submission

Upon arriving at Duke, each student gets a DukeCard. Basically, this little piece of plastic is every Dukie’s lifeblood for their four years on campus—it feeds you, grants you access to dormitories, and, perhaps most importantly, provides you admission into Cameron Indoor Stadium.

As you might expect, many students lose or damage their DukeCards over the course of 4 years. I, being the perfectionist that I am, decided from day 1 of my freshman year that I would keep the same card until graduation day—you gotta have goals people. Today, however, my lofty aspirations were put to rest, thanks to a hostile conversation at the gym entrance:

“Good morning!”

[Angry gate keeper scowls at DukeCard]

“You need a new card. I can’t see your face.”

“What if I told you that I’m graduating in two months?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“I have other forms of identification, though! That card kind of has sentimental value.”

[Caroline smiles sweetly at angry gate keeper]

“I don’t care—get a new card or find a new gym!”

I’m generally one stubborn sister, but the prospect of treadmill deprivation was enough to convince me. Much to my chagrin, I was scared into submission, and I got a new DukeCard this afternoon:

At least the lady at the DukeCard office was nice to me—she let me keep my old card for posterity:)

Oh yeah, this is a food blog.

After my confrontation at the gym, I drowned my sorrows in a bowl of oat bran, topped with an assortment of goodies from my dried fruit & nut stash.

I made my usual jaunt to Whole Foods today as well, and upon returning the hungry beast within me was beckoning hard-core. This BBQ seitan sandwich seemed to effectively satisfy said beast. (This is an attempt at re-creating the sandwich I had in at Blind Faith Cafe last summer).

The FedEx man left me a box of goodies today from Allens, “makers of quality canned goods.” The particular selection of products they sent me are heart-healthy in that they are cholesterol and saturated fat free.

I opened up a can of Hoppin’ John for dinner as part of a veggie platter.

The verdict? Surprisingly sweet and a little lacking on the black-eyed peas quota. The sweetness can be attributed to the sugar in the ingredients list. Also, for a product marketed as heart-healthy, I was little disappointed by the sodium count; I ended up draining the liquid in an effort to keep the saltiness in check. It makes for a tasty and easy dinner component, nonetheless.

With that I bid you goodnight, my friends. Ciao!
